Near-field probing of Mie resonances in single TiO2 microspheres at terahertz frequencies

Guided terahertz pulse reflectometry with double photoconductive antenna

Developments toward the implementation of a terahertz pulse imaging system within a guided reflectometry configuration are reported. Two photoconductive antennas patterned on the same LT-GaAs active layer in association with a silica pipe hollow-core waveguide allowed us to obtain a guided optics-free imager. Besides working in a pulsed regime, the setup does not require additional optics to focus and couple the terahertz pulses into the waveguide core, simplifying the global implementation in comparison with other reported guided terahertz reflectometry systems. The system is qualified for imaging purposes by means of a 1951 USAF resolution test chart. An image resolution, after a 53 mm propagation length, by about 0.707 LP/mm over the 400-550 GHz integrated frequency band, was obtained, thus providing a promising basis to pursue efforts toward compact guided pulse imagers for sample inspection within the terahertz range.

Design of Multilayer Ring Emitter Based on Metamaterial for Thermophotovoltaic Applications

The objective of this study is to design a broadband and wide-angle emitter based on metamaterials with a cut-off wavelength of 2.1 µm to improve the spectral efficiency of thermophotovoltaic emitters. To obtain broadband emission, we conducted the geometric parameter optimization of the number of stacked layers, the inner and outer radii of the nano-rings, and the thickness of the nano-rings. The numerical simulation results showed that the proposed emitter had an average emissivity of 0.97 within the targeted wavelength, which ranged from 0.2 µm to 2.1 µm. In addition, the presented multilayer nano-ring emitter obtained 79.6% spectral efficiency with an InGaAs band gap of 0.6 eV at 1400 K.

Terahertz near-field imaging of dielectric resonators

As an alternative to metallic resonators, dielectric resonators can increase radiation efficiencies of metasurfaces at terahertz frequencies. Such subwavelength resonators made from low-loss dielectric materials operate on the basis of oscillating displacement currents. For full control of electromagnetic waves, it is essential that dielectric resonators operate around their resonant modes. Thus, understanding the nature of these resonances is crucial towards design implementation. To this end, an array of silicon resonators on a quartz substrate is designed to operate in transmission at terahertz frequencies. The resonator dimensions are tailored to observe their low-order modes of resonance at 0.58 THz and 0.61 THz respectively. We employ a terahertz near-field imaging technique to measure the complex near-fields of this dielectric resonator array. This unique method allows direct experimental observation of the first two fundamental resonances.

Nanoscale electrodynamics of strongly correlated quantum materials

Electronic, magnetic, and structural phase inhomogeneities are ubiquitous in strongly correlated quantum materials. The characteristic length scales of the phase inhomogeneities can range from atomic to mesoscopic, depending on their microscopic origins as well as various sample dependent factors. Therefore, progress with the understanding of correlated phenomena critically depends on the experimental techniques suitable to provide appropriate spatial resolution. This requirement is difficult to meet for some of the most informative methods in condensed matter physics, including infrared and optical spectroscopy. Yet, recent developments in near-field optics and imaging enabled a detailed characterization of the electromagnetic response with a spatial resolution down to 10 nm. Thus it is now feasible to exploit at the nanoscale well-established capabilities of optical methods for characterization of electronic processes and lattice dynamics in diverse classes of correlated quantum systems. This review offers a concise description of the state-of-the-art near-field techniques applied to prototypical correlated quantum materials. We also discuss complementary microscopic and spectroscopic methods which reveal important mesoscopic dynamics of quantum materials at different energy scales.

Dual-channel near-field control by polarizations using isotropic and inhomogeneous metasurface

We propose a method for dual-channel near-field manipulations by designing isotropic but inhomogeneous metasurfaces. As example, we present a dual-channel near-field focusing metasurface device. When the device is driven by surface waves from different channels on the metasurface, the near fields will be focused at the same spatial point with different polarizations. Conversely, if a linearly polarized source is radiated at the spatial focal point, different channels will be evoked on the metasurface controlled by polarization. We fabricated and measured the metasurface device in the microwave frequency. Well agreements between the simulation and measurement results are observed. The proposed method exhibits great flexibility in controlling the surface waves and spatial waves simultaneously. It is expected that the proposed method and dual-channel device will facilitate the manipulation of near electromagnetic or optical waves in different frequency regimes.

Trapping waves with terahertz metamaterial absorber based on isotropic Mie resonators

Quasi-monodisperse dielectric particles organized in a periodic hexagonal network on an aluminum surface are exploited numerically and experimentally as a single-layered near-perfect absorber in the terahertz regime. Of particular interest are titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) microspheres because of their large dielectric permittivity and isotropic shape leading to Mie resonances with insensitive polarization. Absorption higher than 80% at normal incidence covering two distinct ranges of frequencies is demonstrated experimentally. Furthermore, the performance of the metamaterial absorber is kept over a wide range of incident angles.
