Abstract
Terahertz spectroscopy has unique advantages in the study of biological molecules in aqueous solutions. However, water has a strong absorption capability in the terahertz region. Reducing the amount of liquid could decrease interference with the terahertz wave, which may, however, affect the measurement accuracy. Therefore, it is particularly important to balance the amount and water content of liquid samples. In this work, a terahertz metamaterial sensor based on metallic strips is designed, fabricated, and used to detect reverse micelles. An aqueous confinement environment in reverse micelles can improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the terahertz response. Due to "water pool" trapped in reverse micelles, the DOPC (1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) solution and DOPC emulsion can successfully be identified in intensity by terahertz spectroscopy. Combined with the metamaterial sensor, an obvious frequency shift of 30 GHz can be achieved to distinguish the DOPC emulsion (5%) from the DOPC solution. This approach may provide a potential way for improving the sensitivity of detecting trace elements in a buffer solution, thus offering a valuable toolkit toward bioanalytical applications.

Abstract
Research on the interaction between nanoscale materials and light holds significant scientific significance for the development of fields such as optoelectronic conversion and biosensing. The study of micro- and nano-optics has produced numerous outstanding research achievements by utilizing the dielectric optical coupling mechanism and plasmon effects to enhance the interaction between light and matter. These findings have demonstrated tremendous potential for applications in the field of molecular fingerprint sensing. This review focuses on a retrospective analysis of recent research studies in the enhancement of wide-band trace terahertz absorption spectroscopy. The physical mechanisms of using waveguide structures, dielectric metasurfaces/meta-gratings, and spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPs) to improve the interaction between light and trace-amount matters are introduced. The new approaches and methods for enhancing broad-band terahertz absorption spectroscopy of trace samples using microstructure designs are discussed. Additionally, we elucidate the scientific ideas and exploratory achievements in enhancing terahertz fingerprint spectroscopy detection. Finally, we provide an outlook on the research and development direction and potential practical applications of absorption spectroscopy enhancement detection.

Abstract
Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) at room temperature and standard atmosphere pressure remains so far the backbone of THz photonics in numerous applications for civil and defense levels. Plasmonic microstructures and metasurfaces are particularly promising for improving THz spectroscopy techniques and developing biomedical and environmental sensors. Highly doped semiconductors are suitable for replacing the traditional plasmonic noble metals in the THz range. We present a perfect absorber structure based on semiconductor III-Sb epitaxial layers. The insulator layer is GaSb while the metal-like layers are Si doped InAsSb (∼ 5·1019 cm-3). The doping is optically measured in the IR with polaritonic effects at the Brewster angle mode. Theoretically, the surface can be engineered in frequency selective absorption array areas of an extensive THz region from 1.0 to 6.0 THz. The technological process is based on a single resist layer used as hard mask in dry etching defined by electron beam lithography. A wide 1350 GHz cumulative bandwidth experimental absorption is measured in THz-TDS between 1.0 and 2.5 THz, only limited by the air-exposed reflectance configuration. These results pave the way to implement finely tuned selective surfaces based on semiconductors to enhance light-matter interaction in the THz region.

Abstract
This review describes recent studies on coupled plasmonic systems for controlling plasmon dynamics and molecular detection using spectral modulations. The plasmon dephasing time can be controlled by weak and strong coupling regimes between the plasmonic nanostructures or localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) and the other optical modes such as microcavities. The modal coupling induces near-field enhancement by extending the plasmon dephasing time to increase the near-field enhancement at certain wavelengths resulting in the enhancement of molecular detection. On the other hand, the interaction between LSPR and molecular excited or vibrational states also modulates the resonance spectrum, which can also be used for detecting a small number of molecules with a subtle change in the spectrum. The spectral modulation is induced by weak and strong couplings between LSPRs and the electronic or vibrational states of molecules, and this method is sensitive enough to measure a single molecule.

Abstract
Fibonacci or bifocal terahertz (THz) imaging is demonstrated experimentally employing a silicon diffractive zone plate in continuous wave mode. Images simultaneously recorded in two different planes are exhibited at 0.6 THz frequency with the spatial resolution of wavelength. Multifocus imaging operation of the Fibonacci lens is compared with a performance of the conventional silicon phase zone plate. Spatial profiles and focal depth features are discussed varying the frequency from 0.3 to 0.6 THz. Good agreement between experimental results and simulation data is revealed.

Abstract
Multilevel phase Fresnel lenses (MPFLs) with a high numerical aperture for 0.58 THz frequencies were developed. The components based on a monocrystalline silicon wafer are prepared by patterning by a high-speed industrial-scale laser direct writing (LDW) system. Two consistent series of the terahertz-MPFLs with phase quantization levels varying between 2 and the continuous kinoform shape for the focal lengths of 5 and 10 mm were produced employing inherent flexibility of the LDW fabrication process. The focusing performance was studied at the optimal 0.58 THz frequency using a Gaussian beam profile and scanning 2D intensity distribution with a terahertz detector along the optical axis. The efficiency of the terahertz-MPFL was found to be dependent of the number of subzones. The position and orientation angles of the patterned plane of the silicon wafer were considered to reduce the effect of standing waves formation in the experiment.

Abstract
In order to improve the gain and directionality of a terahertz antenna, a square grooved-dielectric lens antenna based on a Fresnel zone plate is proposed. First, a diagonal horn, which is adopted as the primary feed antenna, is designed. Then, the far-field characteristics of the lens antenna are studied by using Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction theory and the paraxial approximation. The effects of the full-wave period, the focus diameter ratio, the subregion, and the dielectric substrate thickness on radiation characteristics are studied. The experimental results show that the proposed lens antenna has axisymmetric radiation patterns. The gain is over 26.1 dB, and the 3 dB main lobe beam width is lower than 5.6° across the operation band. The proposed lens antenna is qualified for applications in terahertz wireless communication systems.

Abstract
Infrared light has received attention for sensor applications, including fingerprint spectroscopy, in the bioengineering and security fields. Surface plasmon physics enables the operation of a light harvesting optical antenna. Gold nanochains exhibit localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the infrared region with high frequency selectivity. However, a feasible design for optical antennae with a higher resonant efficiency and frequency selectivity as a function of structural design and periodicity is still unknown. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between the resonant efficiency and frequency selectivity as a function of the structural design of gold nanochains and explored structural periodicity for obtaining highly frequency-selective optical antennae. An optical antenna design with higher resonant efficiency is proposed on the basis of its efficient interaction with non-polarized light.

Abstract
The 7th International Conference on Surface Plasmon Photonics (SPP7) was held in Jerusalem, Israel from May 31st to June 5th, 2015. This independent series of biennial conferences is widely regarded as the premier series in the field, and the 7th edition maintained the tradition of excellence. This Focus Issue collects 23 papers related to research presented at SPP7. While this number is small compared to the total number of papers presented at the conference, the issue is representative and provides a good overview of the field at this point in time.
