Multi-angle fluorometer technique for the determination of absorption and scattering coefficients of subwavelength nanoparticles

Towards maximum optical efficiency of ensembles of colloidal nanorods

Experimental and theoretical studies of colloidal nanoparticles have primarily focused on accurate characterization and simulation of observable characteristics, such as resonant wavelength. In this paper, we tackle the optimal design of colloidal-nanoparticle ensembles: what is the largest possible per-volume optical cross-section, which designs might achieve them, and can such response be experimentally demonstrated? We combine theory and experiment to answer each of these questions. We derive general bounds on the maximum cross-sections per volume, and we apply an analytical antenna model to show that resonant nanorods should nearly achieve such bounds. We use a modified seed-mediated synthesis approach to synthesize ensembles of gold nanorods with small polydispersity, i.e., small variations in size and aspect ratio. Polydispersity is the key determinant of how closely such ensembles can approach their respective bounds yet is difficult to characterize experimentally without near-field measurements. We show that a certain "extinction metric," connecting extinction cross-section per volume with the radiative efficiencies of the nanoparticles, offers a quantitative prediction of polydispersity via quantities that can be rapidly measured with far-field characterization tools. Our predictions apply generally across all plasmonic materials and offer a roadmap to the largest possible optical response of nanoparticle ensembles.

Optical Properties and Kinetics: New Insights to the Porphyrin Assembly and Disassembly by Polarized Resonance Synchronous Spectroscopy

With their unique photochemical properties, porphyrins have remained for decades the most interested chemicals as photonic materials for applications ranging from chemistry, biology, medicine, to photovoltaic. Porphyrins can self-assemble into higher order structures. However, information has been scant on the kinetics and structural evolution during porphyrin assembly and disassembly. Furthermore, quantitative understanding of the porphyrin optical activities is complicated by the complex interplay of photon absorption, scattering, and fluorescence emission that can concurrently occur in porphyrin samples. Using meso-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin as the model molecule, reported herein is a combined UV-vis extinction, polarized Stokes-shifted fluorescence, and polarized resonance synchronous spectroscopic (PRS2) study of porphyrin assembly and disassembly in acidic solutions. Although porphyrin assembly and disassembly occur instantaneously upon the sample preparation, both processes last at least a few months before reaching their approximate equilibrium states. The two processes were monitored in situ by quantifying the porphyrin fluorescence and scattering depolarizations as well as its extinction, absorption, scattering, and fluorescence emission cross sections. In addition to a series of new insights to the porphyrin assembly and disassembly, the methodology described in this work opens the door for the in situ study of the structural and optical properties of photonic materials comprising molecular assembly.

Spectroscopic and Hydrodynamic Characterisation of DNA-Linked Gold Nanoparticle Dimers in Solution using Two-Photon Photoluminescence

Two-photon photoluminescence (TPPL) emission spectra of DNA-gold nanoparticle (AuNP) monoconjugates and the corresponding DNA-linked AuNP dimers are obtained by photon time-of-flight spectroscopy. This technique is combined with two-photon photoluminescence fluctuation correlation spectroscopy (TPPL-FCS) to simultaneously monitor the optical and hydrodynamic behaviour of these nano-assemblies in solution, with single-particle sensitivity and microsecond temporal resolution. In this study, the AuNPs have an average core diameter of 12 nm, which renders their dark-field plasmonic light scattering too weak for single-particle imaging. Moreover, as a result of the lack of plasmonic coupling in the dimers, the optical extinction, scattering and photoluminescence spectra of the DNA-AuNP complexes are not sufficiently different to distinguish between monomers and dimers. The use of TPPL-FCS successfully addresses these bottlenecks and enables the distinction between AuNP monomers and AuNP dimers in solution by measurement of their hydrodynamic rotational and translational diffusion.
