Software-defined control-plane for wavelength selective unicast and multicast of optical data in a silicon photonic platform

Solid-state 360° optical beamforming for reconfigurable multicast optical wireless communications

Optical wireless communication is an attractive technique for data center interconnects due to its low latency line-of-sight connectivity. Multicast, on the other hand, is an important data center network function that can improve traffic throughput, reduce latency, and make efficient use of network resources. To enable reconfigurable multicast in data center optical wireless networks, we propose a novel 360° optical beamforming scheme based on the principle of superposition of orbital angular momentum modes, emitting beams from the source rack pointing towards any combination of other racks so that connections are established between the source and multiple destination racks. We experimentally demonstrate the scheme using solid state devices for a scenario where racks are arranged in a hexagonal formation in which a source rack can connect with any number of adjacent racks simultaneously, with each link transmitting 70 Gb/s on-off-keying modulations at bit error rates of <10^-6 at 1.5-m and 2.0-m link distances.

28 GBd PAM-8 transmission over a 100 nm range using an InP-Si3N4 based integrated dual tunable laser module

This paper describes the detailed characterization of a novel InP-Si₃N₄ dual laser module with results revealing relative intensity noise (RIN) as low as -165 dB/Hz and wide wavelength tunability (100 nm). The hybrid coupled laser is deployed in an unamplified 28 GBd 8 level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) short-reach data center (DC) transmission system. System performance, which is experimentally evaluated in terms of received signal bit error ratio (BER), demonstrates the ability of the proposed laser module to support PAM-8 transmission across a 100 nm tuning range with less than 1 dB variance in receiver sensitivity over the operating wavelength range. Comparative performance studies not only indicate that the proposed source can outperform a commercial external cavity laser (ECL) in an intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) link but also highlight the critical impact of RIN in the design of advanced modulation short-reach systems.

Software-defined networking control plane for seamless integration of multiple silicon photonic switches in Datacom networks

Silicon photonics based switches offer an effective option for the delivery of dynamic bandwidth for future large-scale Datacom systems while maintaining scalable energy efficiency. The integration of a silicon photonics-based optical switching fabric within electronic Datacom architectures requires novel network topologies and arbitration strategies to effectively manage the active elements in the network. We present a scalable software-defined networking control plane to integrate silicon photonic based switches with conventional Ethernet or InfiniBand networks. Our software-defined control plane manages both electronic packet switches and multiple silicon photonic switches for simultaneous packet and circuit switching. We built an experimental Dragonfly network testbed with 16 electronic packet switches and 2 silicon photonic switches to evaluate our control plane. Observed latencies occupied by each step of the switching procedure demonstrate a total of 344 µs control plane latency for data-center and high performance computing platforms.
