Gouy phase shift for annular beam profiles in attosecond experiments

Gouy phase of Bessel-Gaussian beams: theory vs. experiment

It is well-known that the wave of a freely propagating Gaussian beam experiences an additional π phase shift compared to a plane wave. This phase shift, known as the Gouy phase, has significant consequences in, e.g., nonlinear optics, since the nonlinear processes require high peak intensity and phase matching of the focused beams. Hence, determining and controlling the Gouy phase is crucial in many fields of modern optics and photonics. Here, we develop an analytical model for the Gouy phase of long-range Bessel-Gaussian beams obtained by annihilating highly charged optical vortices. The model accounts for the influence of the relevant experimental parameters (topological charge, radius-to-width ratio of the initial ring-shaped beam, and focal length of the Fourier-transforming lens). We find an evolution of the Gouy phase varying nearly linearly with propagation distance and confirm this result experimentally.

Novel beamline for attosecond transient reflection spectroscopy in a sequential two-foci geometry

We present an innovative beamline for extreme ultraviolet (XUV)-infrared (IR) pump-probe reflection spectroscopy in solids with attosecond temporal resolution. The setup uses an actively stabilized interferometer, where attosecond pulse trains or isolated attosecond pulses are produced by high-order harmonic generation in gases. After collinear recombination, the attosecond XUV pulses and the femtosecond IR pulses are focused twice in sequence by toroidal mirrors, giving two spatially separated interaction regions. In the first region, the combination of a gas target with a time-of-flight spectrometer allows for attosecond photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. In the second focal region, an XUV reflectometer is used for attosecond transient reflection spectroscopy (ATRS) experiments. Since the two measurements can be performed simultaneously, precise pump-probe delay calibration can be achieved, thus opening the possibility for a new class of attosecond experiments on solids. Successful operation of the beamline is demonstrated by the generation and characterization of isolated attosecond pulses, the measurement of the absolute reflectivity of SiO₂, and by performing simultaneous photoemission/ATRS in Ge.

Attosecond timing of the dynamical Franz–Keldysh effect

To what extent do intra- or inter-band transitions dominate the optical response of dielectrics when pumped by a few-cycle near-infrared transient electric field? In order to find an answer to this question we investigate the dynamical Franz–Keldysh effect in polycrystalline diamond and discuss in detail the attosecond delay of the induced electron dynamics with regard to the driving transient electric field while the peak intensity is varied between 1 × 1012 and 10 × 1012 W cm−2. We found that the main oscillating feature in transient absorption at 43 eV is in phase with the electric field of the pump, to within 49 ± 78 as. However, the phase delay shows a slightly asymmetric V-shaped linear energy dispersion with a rate of about 200 as eV–1. Theoretical calculations within the dipole approximation reproduce the data and allow us to conclude that intra-band motion dominates under our experimental conditions.

All-optical characterization of the two-dimensional waveform and the Gouy phase of an infrared pulse based on plasma fluorescence of gas

The characterization of the temporal waveform of few-cycle laser pulses is an indispensable part in strong-field physics and attosecond science. Recently, a simple waveform-characterization technique called TIPTOE (tunneling ionization with a perturbation for the time-domain observation of an electric field) has been demonstrated for measuring linearly polarized few-cycle pulses. We theoretically and experimentally show that TIPTOE can be extended to resolve more characteristics of an optical waveform: the two-dimensional polarization and the Gouy phase. Based on the plasma fluorescence of a gaseous medium, we achieve all-optical and spatially resolved measurements of the waveform of an infrared pulse. This detection method enables the remote characterization of a waveform without the need to place an apparatus near the focal point of the laser beam. The proposed approach represents a simple and powerful method for conducting waveform diagnostics on few-cycle laser sources.

Annular beam driven high harmonic generation for high flux coherent XUV and soft X-ray radiation

Separation of the high average power driving laser beam from the generated XUV to soft-X-ray radiation poses great challenges in collinear HHG setups due to the losses and the limited power handling capabilities of the typically used separating optics. This paper demonstrates the potential of driving HHG with annular beams, which allow for a straightforward and power scalable separation via a simple pinhole, resulting in a measured driving laser suppression of 5⋅10^-3. The approach is characterized by an enormous flexibility as it can be applied to a broad range of input parameters and generated photon energies. Phase matching aspects are analyzed in detail and an HHG conversion efficiency that is only 27% lower than using a Gaussian beam under identical conditions is demonstrated, revealing the viability of the annular beam approach for high flux coherent short-wavelength sources and high average power driving lasers.

Spectral anomalies and Gouy rotation around the singularity of ultrashort vortex pulses

Spectral anomalies of femtosecond pulses with orbital angular momentum were studied in the vicinity of singularities. Bessel-Gauss (BG) beams were generated with mode-locked Ti:sapphire oscillators and dispersion-compensated diffractive axicons acting as spiral phase plates (SPPs). High-resolution two-dimensional spectral mapping was performed with a scanning fiber probe. Progressive rotation of the most pronounced features, known as "spectral eyes", in the maps of spectral moments was found at increasing propagation distance. The phenomenon is explained by a wavelength-dependent Gouy phase shift of interfering spectral components in the twisted wavefront. Spatial "spectral switching" was detected for few-cycle pulses. Possible improvements of selectivity are proposed.
