Graphene on meta-surface for super-resolution optical imaging with a sub-10 nm resolution

Electrically controllable optical switch metasurface based on vanadium dioxide

We report a voltage-tunable reflective gold wire grid metasurface on vanadium dioxide thin film, which consists of a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure. We excite surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes on the gold surface by fabricating a one-dimensional structured gold wire grid. Joule heating of laser-induced graphene (LIG) can be controlled by the voltage at the bottom, allowing vanadium dioxide in the structure to complete the transition from the insulating state to the metallic state. The phase transition of vanadium dioxide strongly disrupts the plasmon modes excited by the gold wire grid above, thereby realizing a huge change in the reflection spectrum. This acts as a tunable metasurface optical switch with a maximum modulation depth (MD) of over 20 dB. We provide a more effective and simple method for creating tunable metasurfaces in the near-infrared band, which can allow metasurfaces to have wider applications in optical signal processing, optical storage, and holography.

Super-Resolution Imaging with Graphene

Super-resolution optical imaging is a consistent research hotspot for promoting studies in nanotechnology and biotechnology due to its capability of overcoming the diffraction limit, which is an intrinsic obstacle in pursuing higher resolution for conventional microscopy techniques. In the past few decades, a great number of techniques in this research domain have been theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Graphene, a special two-dimensional material, has become the most meritorious candidate and attracted incredible attention in high-resolution imaging domain due to its distinctive properties. In this article, the working principle of graphene-assisted imaging devices is summarized, and recent advances of super-resolution optical imaging based on graphene are reviewed for both near-field and far-field applications.

Refractive index sensing and imaging based on polarization-sensitive graphene

Graphene exhibits extraordinary opto-electronic properties due to its unique dynamic conductivity, bringing great value in optical sensing, surface plasmon modulation and photonic devices. Based on the polarization-sensitive absorption of graphene working at near infrared to ultraviolet wavelengths, we theoretically investigate the refractive index sensing and imaging mechanism under oblique and tight focusing incidences of light respectively. We demonstrate that such graphene-based methods can provide ultrahigh refractive index resolution (∼2.09×10^-8 RIU) for label-free sensing, and high transverse spatial resolution (∼200 nm) and large longitudinal detecting length (∼750 nm) for imaging under 532 nm incident wavelength. The proposed methods could potentially guide future researches in graphene optical detection, non-invasive biological sensing and imaging, and other applications.

Recent advances in graphene-based nanomaterials: properties, toxicity and applications in chemistry, biology and medicine

This review (with 239 refs.) summarizes the progress that has been made in applications of graphene-based nanomaterials (such as plain graphene, graphene oxides, doped graphene oxides, graphene quantums dots) in biosensing, imaging, drug delivery and diagnosis. Following an introduction into the field, a first large section covers the toxicity of graphene and its derivatives (with subsections on bacterial toxicity and tissue toxicity). The use of graphene-based nanomaterials in sensors is reviewed next, with subsections on electrochemical, FET-based, fluorescent, chemiluminescent and colorimetric sensors and probes. The large field of imaging is treated next, with subchapters on optical, PET-based, and magnetic resonance based methods. A concluding section summarizes the current status, addresses current challenges, and gives an outlook on potential future trends.
