Minimization of 1/fn phase noise in liquid crystal masks for reliable femtosecond pulse shaping

Dispersion scan frequency resolved optical gating for consistency check of pulse retrieval

Many methods commonly used to characterize ultrafast laser pulses, such as the frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) or the dispersion scan (d-scan), face problems when they are used on pulses with a spectrum or phase varying within the laser beam cross section or the acquisition time. The presence of such pulse shape variation leads to discrepancy between the measured FROG trace and its reconstructed counterparts. Nevertheless, it is difficult to reliably discern this shape variation because even the distorted experimental FROG trace can be reasonably reproduced by a realistic pulse shape. In this work, we examine and discern the variation of the pulse shape based on a new method, dispersion-scan FROG (D-FROG), which combines the idea of dispersion scanning with the FROG method. This technique provides a means of careful evaluation of the laser pulse based on a set of FROG traces connected by known dispersion changes. Therefore, this method can disclose seemingly correct pulse retrievals from distorted datasets. The D-FROG method can be used as a simple extension of the FROG technique to provide a consistency check able to identify the shortcomings in the pulse characterization.

Coherent 2D electronic spectroscopy with complete characterization of excitation pulses during all scanning steps

Coherent two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectroscopy has become a standard tool in ultrafast science. Thus it is relevant to consider the accuracy of data considering both experimental imperfections and theoretical assumptions about idealized conditions. It is already known that chirped excitation pulses can affect 2D line shapes. In the present work, we demonstrate performance-efficient, automated characterization of the full electric field of each individual multipulse sequence employed during a 2D scanning procedure. Using Fourier-transform spectral interferometry, we analyze how the temporal intensity and phase profile varies from scanning step to scanning step and extract relevant pulse-sequence parameters. This takes into account both random and systematic variations during the scan that may be caused, for example, by femtosecond pulse-shaping artifacts. Using the characterized fields, we simulate and compare 2D spectra obtained with idealized and real shapes obtained from an LCD-based pulse shaper. Exemplarily, we consider fluorescence of a molecular dimer and multiphoton photoemission of a plasmonic nanoslit. The deviations from pulse-shaper artifacts in our specific case do not distort strongly the population-based multidimensional data. The characterization procedure is applicable to other pulses-shaping technologies or excitation geometries, including also pump-probe geometry with multipulse excitation and coherent detection, and allows for accurate consideration of realistic optical excitation fields at all inter-pulse time-delays.

Correction of Fabry-Pérot interference effects in phase and amplitude pulse shapers based on liquid crystal spatial light modulators

Broadband femtosecond laser pulses manipulated by pulse shapers based on a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LC-SLM) inevitably experience periodic spectral distortions due to Fabry-Perot interference effects within the LC-SLM. We present a method, applicable to phase and amplitude pulse shapers based on dual LC-SLMs, that enables the calibration and suppression of the undesired spectral intensity modulations in a non-iterative fashion. We demonstrate that the method considerably improves the amplitude shaping fidelity of phase and amplitude pulse shapers without compromising the phase shaping properties.
