Molecular Chirality and Its Monitoring by Ultrafast X-ray Pulses

Major advances in X-ray sources including the development of circularly polarized and orbital angular momentum pulses make it possible to probe matter chirality at unprecedented energy regimes and with Ångström and femtosecond spatiotemporal resolutions. We survey the theory of stationary and time-resolved nonlinear chiral measurements that can be carried out in the X-ray regime using tabletop X-ray sources or large scale (XFEL, synchrotron) facilities. A variety of possible signals and their information content are discussed.

Investigation of Resonance-Enhanced High-Order Harmonics by Two-Component Laser-Produced Plasmas

Resonance-enhanced harmonics from laser-produced plasma plumes are an interesting phenomenon, whose underlying mechanism is still under debate. In particular, it is unclear whether the macroscopic dispersion properties of the plasma are the key factors for the formation of the enhancement. To shed light on this problem, we perform experiments with two-component plasmas, in which one of the components (tin) is known to be able to generate enhanced harmonics and the other component (lead) is known for altering the overall dispersion properties of the plasma medium. We compare the harmonics spectra from the plasma of pure tin and the plasma of tin/lead alloy. Depending on the driving wavelength, we observe enhanced harmonics at around 47 or 44 nm in both types of plasmas. The two enhanced regions could be attributed to resonances in singly-charged and doubly-charged tin ions, respectively. Our results indicate that the co-existence of lead plasma does not destroy the presence of the enhanced harmonics of tin plasma, and it seems to suggest that the macroscopic properties of the plasma are not the origin of the resonance-enhanced harmonics in tin.

Optimal Basis Set for Electron Dynamics in Strong Laser Fields: The case of Molecular Ion H2. J Chem Theory Comput 2018;14:5846-5858. [PMID: 30247900 PMCID: PMC6255052 DOI: 10.1021/acs.jctc.8b00656]

A clear understanding of the mechanisms that control the electron dynamics in a strong laser field is still a challenge that requires interpretation by advanced theory. Development of accurate theoretical and computational methods, able to provide a precise treatment of the fundamental processes generated in the strong field regime, is therefore crucial. A central aspect is the choice of the basis for the wave function expansion. Accuracy in describing multiphoton processes is strictly related to the intrinsic properties of the basis, such as numerical convergence, computational cost, and representation of the continuum. By explicitly solving the 1D and 3D time-dependent Schrödinger equation for H₂⁺ in the presence of an intense electric field, we explore the numerical performance of using a real-space grid, a B-spline basis, and a Gaussian basis (improved by optimal Gaussian functions for the continuum). We analyze the performance of the three bases for high-harmonic generation and above-threshold ionization for H₂⁺. In particular, for high-harmonic generation, the capability of the basis to reproduce the two-center interference and the hyper-Raman phenomena is investigated.

Controlling the multi-electron dynamics in the high harmonic spectrum from N2O molecule using TDDFT

In this study, high harmonic generation from a multi-atomic nitrous oxide molecule was investigated. A comprehensive three-dimensional calculation of the molecular dynamics and electron trajectories through an accurate time-dependent density functional theory was conducted to efficiently explore a broad harmonic plateau. The effects of multi-electron and inner orbitals on the harmonic spectrum and generated coherent attosecond pulses were analyzed. The role of the valence electrons in controlling the process and extending the harmonic plateau was investigated. The main issue of producing a super-continuum harmonic spectrum via a frequency shift was considered. The time-frequency representation by means of a wavelet transform of the induced dipole acceleration provided a good insight into the distorted effects from the nonlinear processes in high harmonic emission. The effect of the chirped laser pulse on the production of broadband amplitude was justified in this model. By adjusting the optimal laser parameters to an input intensity of 2.5 × 10¹⁴ W cm^-2, an isolated 68 as pulse was generated.
