High-efficiency and robust binary fringe optimization for superfast 3D shape measurement

By utilizing 1-bit binary fringe patterns instead of conventional 8-bit sinusoidal patterns, binary defocusing techniques have been successfully applied for high-speed 3D shape measurement. However, simultaneously achieving high accuracy and high speed remains challenging. To overcome this limitation, we propose a high-efficiency and robust binary fringe optimization method for superfast 3D shape measurement, which consists of 1D optimization and 2D modulation. Specifically, for 1D optimization, the three-level OPWM technique is introduced for high-order harmonics elimination, and an optimization framework is presented for generating the 'best' three-level OPWM pattern especially for large fringe periods. For 2D modulation, a single-pattern three-level OPWM strategy is proposed by utilizing all the dimensions for intensity modulation to decrease the required projection patterns. Thus, the proposed method essentially belongs to the 2D modulation technique, yet iterative optimization is carried out along one dimension, which drastically improves the computational efficiency while ensuring high accuracy. With only one set of optimized patterns, both simulations and experiments demonstrate that high-quality phase maps can be consistently generated for a wide range of fringe periods (e.g., from 18 to 1140 pixels) and different amounts of defocusing, and it can achieve superfast and high-accuracy 3D shape measurement.

Dual-biprism-based coaxial fringe projection system

Fringe projection profilometry (FPP) has been widely used for three-dimensional shape measurement because of its simple hardware and high measurement accuracy. However, the use of most FPP systems to measure complex surfaces such as stepped height objects can result in severe occlusion and shadow. To alleviate this problem, a coaxial measurement method based on dual biprisms is presented in this paper. The system is low-cost and easy to implement, and does not require the introduction of mechanical moving parts. Only dual biprisms are introduced into the coaxial system to provide the geometric constraints required for reconstruction. Experimental results on the reconstruction of a surface with significant height changes demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve shadow-free measurements.

Real-time profilometry by bicolor grating video projection

A novel real-time 2+1 three-dimensional(3D) measuring method based on bicolor grating video projection is proposed. Firstly, only two frames of bicolor gratings, in which the red channels are two sinusoidal fringes with a shifting phase of π/2 and the blue channels are the same background light equivalent to the DC component of the two sinusoidal fringes are encoded and arranged alternatively to synthesize into a repetitive bicolor grating video, While this video is projected onto the measured object, the real-time bicolor deformed pattern video can be recorded by using a color CMOS camera, and the bicolor deformed pattern sequence at different moments can be extracted by computer processing, so that the 2+1 algorithm can be used to accomplish real-time 3D measurement of moving object. Before measuring, we used the same method to design two sinusoidal fringes with a difference of π in their red channels, respectively, to calibrate the sensitivity ratio between the red and blue channels of the CMOS camera, which can effectively eliminate the chromaticity imbalance between R and B channels and reduce the color crosstalk. Experimental results and analysis confirm the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. Because the proposed method needs a repetitive bicolor grating video synthesized with only two-frame bicolor gratings to be projected, the 3D measurement acquisition speed and real-time accuracy will be improved compared with the traditional 2+1 3D measuring method.

State-of-the-art active optical techniques for three-dimensional surface metrology: a review [Invited]

This paper reviews recent developments of non-contact three-dimensional (3D) surface metrology using an active structured optical probe. We focus primarily on those active non-contact 3D surface measurement techniques that could be applicable to the manufacturing industry. We discuss principles of each technology, and its advantageous characteristics as well as limitations. Towards the end, we discuss our perspectives on the current technological challenges in designing and implementing these methods in practical applications.

High dynamic range 3D measurement based on spectral modulation and hyperspectral imaging

High-speed and high-accuracy three-dimensional (3D) measurement is of great importance in numerous areas. Recently proposed binary defocusing techniques have enabled breakthroughs in speed by utilizing 1-bit binary fringe patterns with the advanced digital light processing (DLP) projection platform. Meanwhile, much research has also been conducted to enhance measurement accuracy by temporally or spatially modulating the binary patterns. However, it is still challenging to use such techniques for measuring objects with high dynamic range (HDR) of surface reflectivity such as metal parts. To this end, we propose a novel HDR 3D measurement method based on spectral modulation and hyperspectral imaging. By modulating the illumination light with a spectral filter, and acquiring the fringe patterns with a hyperspectral camera, high-contrast HDR fringe imaging and 3D measurement can finally be achieved. Experiments were carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.
