Surface modes in plasmonic Bragg fibers with negative average permittivity

Surface gap solitons in the Schrödinger equation with quintic nonlinearity and a lattice potential

We demonstrate the existence of surface gap solitons, a special type of asymmetric solitons, in the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with quintic nonlinearity and a periodic linear potential. The nonlinearity is suddenly switched in a step-like fashion in the middle of the transverse spatial region, while the periodic linear potential is chosen in the form of a simple sin 2 lattice. The asymmetric nonlinearities in this work can be realized by the Feshbach resonance in Bose-Einstein condensates or by the photorefractive effect in optics. The major peaks in the gap soliton families are asymmetric and they are located at the position of the jump in nonlinearity (at x = 0). In addition, the major peaks of the two-peak and multi-peak solitons at the position x = 0 are higher than those after that position, at x > 0. And such phenomena are more obvious when the value of chemical potential is large, or when the difference of nonlinearity values across the jump is big. Along the way, linear stability analysis of the surface gap solitons is performed and the stability domains are identified. It is found that in this model, the solitons in the first band gap are mostly stable (excepting narrow domains of instability at the edges of the gap), while those in the second band gap are mostly unstable (excepting extremely narrow domains of stability for fundamental solitons). These findings are also corroborated by direct numerical simulations.

Observation of delocalization transition in topological waveguide arrays with long-range interactions

Topological edge states are a generic feature of topological insulators, and the long-range interactions, which break certain properties of topological edge states, are always non-negligible in real physical systems. In this Letter, we investigate the influence of next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) interactions on the topological properties of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model by extracting the survival probabilities at the boundary of the photonic lattices. By introducing a series of integrated photonic waveguide arrays with different strengths of long-range interactions, we experimentally observe delocalization transition of light in SSH lattices with nontrivial phase, which is in good agreement with our theoretical predictions. The results indicate that the NNN interactions can significantly affect the edge states, and that the localization of these states can be absent in topologically nontrivial phase. Our work provides an alternative way to investigate the interplay between long-range interactions and localized states, which may stimulate further interest in topological properties in relevant structures.

Square-root non-Bloch topological insulators in non-Hermitian ring resonators

We investigate the topological skin effect in a ring resonator array which can be mapped into the square root of a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with non-Hermitian asymmetric coupling. The asymmetric coupling is realized by integrating the same amount of gain and loss into the two half perimeters of linking rings that effectively couple two adjacent site rings. Such a square-root topological insulator inherits the properties from its parent Hamiltonian, which has the same phase transition points and exhibits non-Bloch features as well. We show the band closing points for open chain are different from that of periodic chain as a result of the skin effect. Moreover, the square-root insulator supports multiple topological edge modes as the number of band gaps is doubled compared to the original Hamiltonian. The full-wave simulations agree well with the theoretical analyses based on a tight-binding model. The study provides a promising approach to investigate the skin effect by utilizing ring resonators and may find potential applications in light trapping, lasers, and filters.

Bragg labeled wavelength calibrates interferometric sensors in hollow core fiber

A Bragg labeled wavelength (BLW) employed to the sensitivity calibration in an interference pattern has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. According to the critical condition of Fabry-Perot (FP) interference and the antiresonant (AR) effect, the length of hollow core fiber (HCF) is artificially controlled to form a FP microcavity by collapsed fusion splicing. Dual-spectral features of the BLW and inline multimode interference (IMMI) dominate the transmission spectrum of the collapsed Bragg HCF (BHCF). The location of the BLW remains unchanged once the air-core diameter is selected. Sensing performance is investigated to validate the calibration function of the proposed BHCF. In particular, the temperature sensitivity of the BLW and multimode interference are 12.8 pm/°C and 87.1 pm/°C, respectively, corresponding to the reference sensitivity induced by the Bragg structure and the measurement sensitivity of the IMMI. All these findings highlight the calibration of HCF-based interferometric sensors in practical applications.

Plasmonic Jackiw-Rebbi Modes in Graphene Waveguide Arrays

We investigate the topological bound modes of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in a graphene pair waveguide array. The arrays are with uniform inter-layer and intra-layer spacings but the chemical potential of two graphene in each pair are different. The topological bound modes emerge when two arrays with opposite sequences of chemical potential are interfaced, which are analogous to Jackiw-Rebbi modes with opposite mass. We show the topological bound modes can be dynamically controlled by tuning the chemical potential, and the propagation loss of topological bound modes can be remarkably reduced by decreasing the chemical potential. Thanks to the strong confinement of graphene SPPs, the modal wavelength of topological bound modes can be squeezed as small as 1/70 of incident wavelength. The study provides a promising approach to realizing robust light transport beyond diffraction limit.

Topological bound modes in anti-PT-symmetric optical waveguide arrays

We investigate the topological bound modes in a binary optical waveguide array with anti-parity-time (PT) symmetry. The anti-PT-symmetric arrays are realized by incorporating additional waveguides to the bare arrays, such that the effective coupling coefficients are imaginary. The systems experience two kinds of phase transition, including global topological order transition and quantum phase transition. As a result, the system supports two kinds of robust bound modes, which are protected by the global topological order and the quantum phase, respectively. The study provides a promising approach to realizing robust light transport by utilizing mediating components.
