Polarization-selective dual-wavelength gap-surface plasmon metasurfaces

Metasurface-based triple-band beam splitter with large spatial separation at visible wavelengths

The dual-function of a wavelength beam splitter and a power beam splitter is desired in both classical optics and quantum optics. We propose a triple-band large-spatial-separation beam splitter at visible wavelengths using a phase-gradient metasurface in both the x- and y-directions. Under x-polarized normal incidence, the blue light is split in the y-direction into two equal-intensity beams owing to the resonance inside a single meta-atom, the green light is split in the x-direction into another two equal-intensity beams owing to the size variation between adjacent meta-atoms, while the red light passes directly without splitting. The size of the meta-atoms was optimized based on their phase response and transmittance. The simulated working efficiencies under normal incidence are 68.1%, 85.0%, and 81.9% at the wavelengths of 420 nm, 530 nm, and 730 nm, respectively. The sensitivities of the oblique incidence and polarization angle are also discussed.

Multifunctional tunable gradient metasurfaces for terahertz beam splitting and light absorption

Obtaining functional devices with tunable features is beneficial to advance terahertz (THz) science and technology. Here, we propose multifunctional gradient metasurfaces that are composed of a periodic array of binary Si microcylinders integrated with VO₂ and graphene. The metasurfaces act as transmittive (reflective) beamsplitters for the dielectric (metallic) phase of VO₂ with a switchable characteristic. Moreover, by integrating the metasurfaces with graphene and modifying its chemical potential, one can tune the intensity of the split beam as well as obtain nearly perfect resonant absorptions. Consequently, the proposed metasurfaces can find potential applications in THz interferometers, multiplexers, and light absorbers.

All-dielectric multifunctional transmittance-tunable metasurfaces based on guided-mode resonance and ENZ effect

Electrically tunable metasurfaces open new doors for manipulating the phase, amplitude and polarization of light in ultrathin layers. Compared with metal assisted metasurfaces, all-dielectric transmission metasurfaces-with outstanding feature of low loss, especially incorporating with new electro-optical materials-show great potential for the next generation flat optics. In this study, by combining the epsilon-near-zero effect in indium tin oxide (ITO) with guided-mode resonance, we propose novel electrically tunable all-dielectric metasurface architectures with versatile functions for widespread potential application. The inserted periodic ITO and hafnium oxide layers sandwiched in silicon act as two metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitors in a single period to disturb the resonance wavelength in the near-infrared spectral range under the voltage applied. For the one-dimensional structure, the transmittances of this metasurface at 1512 and 1510 nm change 20 and -14 dB under 0∼5 V bias voltage, respectively. In addition, the bilayer structure performs well in double-waveband applications, indicating that more layers can support more operation wavebands. Meanwhile, the two-dimensional structure works as a polarization insensitive device when setting the same structural parameters in both orthogonal directions. The proposed architecture, with various merits including ultra-compact size, high-speed and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor compatibility, provides a multifunctional and multi-degree-of-freedom design, as well as enormous potential applications in more complicated flat optics.

Graphene-based polarization-sensitive metasurfaces for integrated optics applications

In this study, polarization detection of the incident wave with amplitude and frequency is achieved by proposed graphene-based metasurfaces for integrated optics applications. Metasurfaces consist of elliptical nanodisks of graphene as the meta-atoms. Synthesis of the metasurfaces is based on the analytical approach of the equivalent conductivity method. The elliptical nanodisks play an asymmetric meta-atom role with respect to the polarization of the incident waves. This concept is applied to design polarization selective metasurfaces. Two types of polarization-sensitive metasurfaces are designed. One of them has unique nanodisks that change the absorbance coefficient by varying the polarization of the incident wave in an absorber structure. The second one has three types of elliptical nanodisks with various dimensions and orientations that distinguish the polarization. This metasurface is used in a demultiplexing structure to select a desired wave with a specific frequency.

Dual-Band Metasurfaces Using Multiple Gap-Surface Plasmon Resonances

Metasurfaces operating at multiple spectral ranges with integrated diversified functionalities while retaining the flexible design strategy are highly desired within the area of modern flat optics. Here, we propose and demonstrate the use of multiple gap-surface plasmon (GSP) resonances for the realization of dual-band multifunctional metasurfaces by designing GSP meta-atoms that would resonate at two different wavelengths. By tailoring nanobrick dimensions of a simple GSP meta-atom so as to enable both the first-order resonance at 1450 nm and the third-order one at 633 nm, we design phase-gradient GSP metasurfaces for polarization-independent beam steering and polarization-splitting, simultaneously, at telecom (1350-1550 nm) and visible (575-675 nm) wavelengths. The fabricated metasurfaces show good performance with >65% diffraction efficiency at the first-order resonant wavelength of 1450 nm and over 50% efficiency within the telecom range of 1350-1550 nm, while at the third-order resonant wavelength of 633 nm, the diffraction efficiency is 20 and >10% within the visible range of 575-675 nm. Our findings, therefore, demonstrate a flexible and robust approach for the realization of efficient dual-band GSP metasurfaces that can readily be combined with complex integrated designs to implement multiple functionalities highly sought after for diverse applications.

Switchable multifunctional terahertz metasurfaces employing vanadium dioxide

In this paper, we design a type of switchable metasurfaces by employing vanadium dioxide (VO₂), which possess tunable and diversified functionalities in the terahertz (THz) frequencies. The properly designed homogeneous metasurface can be dynamically tuned from a broadband absorber to a reflecting surface due to the insulator-to-metal transition of VO₂. When VO₂ is in its insulating state, the metasurface can efficiently absorb the normally incident THz wave in the frequency range of 0.535-1.3 THz with the average absorption of ~97.2%. Once the VO₂ is heated up and switched to its fully metallic state, the designed metasurface exhibits broadband and efficient reflection (>80%) in the frequency range from 0.5 to 1.3 THz. Capitalizing on such meta-atom design, we further extend the functionalities by introducing phase-gradients when VO₂ is in its fully metallic state and consequently achieve polarization-insensitive beam-steering and polarization-splitting, while maintaining broadband absorption when VO₂ is in insulating state.
