Scaling the repetition rate of thulium-doped ultrafast soliton fiber lasers to the GHz regime

Low-noise mode-locking in a GHz repetition rate Tm3+-doped fiber laser

We demonstrate a GHz repetition rate mode-locked Tm3+-doped fiber laser with low noise. Based on a home-made Tm3+-doped barium gallo-germanate fiber with reduced dispersion, a broad optical spectrum of mode-locking is achieved, and its amplified spontaneous emission quantum-limited timing jitter is largely suppressed. Besides, we carefully investigate the influence of the intracavity pump strength on the noise performance of the mode-locked pulses and find that manipulating the intracavity pump power can be an effective method for optimizing the timing jitter and relative intensity noise (RIN). Particularly, RIN, which originated from the relaxation oscillation, can be effectively suppressed by 33 dB at offset frequencies of >1 MHz. The integrated timing jitter and RIN are only 7.9 fs (10 kHz-10 MHz) and 0.05% (10 Hz-10 MHz), respectively.

Theoretical and experimental investigations of dispersion-managed, polarization-maintaining 1-GHz mode-locked fiber lasers

High-repetition-rate (up to GHz) femtosecond mode-locked lasers have attracted significant attention in many applications, such as broadband spectroscopy, high-speed optical sampling, and so on. In this paper, the characteristics of dispersion-managed, polarization-maintaining (PM) 1-GHz mode-locked fiber lasers were investigated both experimentally and numerically. Three compact and robust 1-GHz fiber lasers operating at anomalous, normal, and near-zero dispersion regimes were demonstrated, respectively. The net dispersion of the linear cavity is adjusted by changing types of PM erbium-doped fibers (EDFs) and semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) in the cavity. Moreover, the long-term stability of the three mode-locked fiber lasers is proved without external control. In order to better understand the mode-locking dynamics of lasers, a numerical model was constructed for analysis of the 1-GHz fiber laser. Pulse evolution simulations have been carried out for soliton, dissipative-soliton, and stretched-pulse mode-locking regimes under different net dispersion conditions. Experimental results are basically in agreement with the numerical simulations.

Threshold reduction of GHz-repetition-rate passive mode-locking by tapering the gain fiber

Passively mode-locked fiber lasers with GHz repetition rates have recently attracted significant attention in frontier research areas, including frequency-comb spectroscopy, coherent optical communication, photonic radar, micromachining, etc. In general, the threshold of passive mode-locking increases with the fundamental repetition rate, which is inversely proportional to the cavity length, and this sets a limit on the scalability of the fundamental repetition rate. To overcome this issue, here we propose to reduce the threshold of continuous-wave mode-locking (CWML) by precisely tapering the gain fiber, which can enhance the power density incident on the semiconductor saturable absorber mirror. Assisted by the analysis of guiding property, an experimental scheme is established for tapering standard Yb-doped fibers (125 µm cladding diameter), and tapered Yb-doped fibers with different waist diameters can be fabricated. Using a tapered Yb-doped gain fiber with waist cladding diameter of 90 µm, we are able to achieve CWML with a fundamental repetition rate of 3.3 GHz, and reduce its mode-locking threshold by 31%. More importantly, the optical spectrum of the CWML is found to be broadened with the waist diameter reduction of the gain fiber, which is beneficial for generating shorter transform-limited pulses. The efforts made in this work can provide a promising route to realize stable high-repetition-rate mode-locked fiber lasers with moderate levels of pump power.

Femtosecond fiber oscillator based on a 3×3-coupler-NALM: numerical model and realizations at 1 and 2 µm

In this article, we present robust passively mode-locked femtosecond lasers operating at 1030 and approximately 2000 nm, respectively. The all-fiber, all-polarization-maintaining (PM) lasers are mode-locked by a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) which is attached to the cavity by a 3×3-coupler. The NALM is phase-biased by the coupler, enabling turn-key operation of the oscillator. Femtosecond pulse generation is demonstrated using Ytterbium and Thulium doped active fibers. Depending on the wavelength and the installed dispersive elements, pulse formation can be aided by a range of attractors including self-similar pulse evolution, soliton, or dispersion-managed soliton formation.

>10 GHz femtosecond fiber laser system at 2.0 μm

We demonstrate a high-power 2.0-μm fiber laser system delivering femtosecond pulses with a fundamental repetition rate of >10 GHz, the highest value so far, to the best of our knowledge. The seed is a self-started fundamentally mode-locked Tm-doped fiber laser that has excellent power and spectral stabilities. The laser system can provide an average power of >600 mW, and the use of soliton-effect-based pulse compression allows the achievement of a pulse duration of 163 fs, leading to a compression factor of ∼ 13. It is anticipated that this new high-power femtosecond fiber laser with a 10-GHz-level fundamental repetition rate can serve as a promising light source for various applications, including laser surgery, micromachining, frequency comb spectroscopy, and nonlinear frequency conversion.

High-power low-noise 2-GHz femtosecond laser oscillator at 2.4 µm

Femtosecond lasers with high repetition rates are attractive for spectroscopic applications with high sampling rates, high power per comb line, and resolvable lines. However, at long wavelengths beyond 2 µm, current laser sources are either limited to low output power or repetition rates below 1 GHz. Here we present an ultrafast laser oscillator operating with high output power at multi-GHz repetition rate. The laser produces transform-limited 155-fs pulses at a repetition rate of 2 GHz, and an average power of 0.8 W, reaching up to 0.7 mW per comb line at the center wavelength of 2.38 µm. We have achieved this milestone via a Cr²⁺-doped ZnS solid-state laser modelocked with an InGaSb/GaSb SESAM. The laser is stable over several hours of operation. The integrated relative intensity noise is 0.15% rms for [10 Hz, 100 MHz], and the laser becomes shot noise limited (-160 dBc/Hz) at frequencies above 10 MHz. Our timing jitter measurements reveal contributions from pump laser noise and relaxation oscillations, with a timing jitter of 100 fs integrated over [3 kHz, 100 MHz]. These results open up a path towards fast and sensitive spectroscopy directly above 2 µm.

4.3 GHz fundamental repetition rate passively mode-locked fiber laser using a silicate-clad heavily Tm3+-doped germanate core multimaterial fiber

We report a silicate-clad heavily Tm³⁺-doped germanate core multimaterial fiber that is successfully drawn by using a rod-in-tube method. This new fiber has a high gain per unit length of 6.11 dB/cm at 1.95 µm, which is, to the best of the authors' knowledge, the highest gain per unit length reported so far for Tm³⁺-doped glass fibers. By virtue of this high-gain glass fiber, an all-fiber-integrated passively mode-locked fiber laser with a fundamental repetition rate up to 4.3 GHz is demonstrated. Remarkably, the generated pulse operating at 1968 nm exhibits a signal-to-noise ratio of >76 dB in the radio-frequency domain. These results suggest that the silicate-clad heavily Tm³⁺-doped germanate core multimaterial fiber can act as a key building block for high repetition rate mode-locked fiber lasers at 2 µm.

10 GHz regeneratively mode-locked thulium fiber laser with a stabilized repetition rate

GHz pulsed thulium-doped fiber laser with stabilized repetition rate can enable a wide range of applications. By employing regenerative mode-locking and cavity stabilization technique, we have for the first time demonstrated a 10 GHz polarization-maintaining thulium-doped fiber laser, which has a long-term repetition-rate stabilization and picosecond timing-jitter. In our experiment, a RF circuitry is designed to extract the 10 GHz longitudinal clock signal so that stable regenerative mode-locking is achieved. A piezo actuator-based phase-lock-loop is used to lock the regeneratively mode-locked pulses to a local reference synthesizer. The regeneratively mode-locked pulses with picosecond pulse width exhibit a high super-mode suppression ratio of 60 dB. In addition, the repetition rate of the laser shows good long-term stability with a variation of 8 Hz in 8 hours, corresponding to a cavity free spectral range fluctuation of less than 16 mHz. Meanwhile, the Allan deviation of the stabilized 10 GHz regeneratively mode-locked pulses is measured to be as low as 2 × 10^-12 over 1000 s average time, which is only limited by the stability of the reference synthesizer. Such an ultra-stable 10 GHz pulsed thulium fiber laser may find potential application in 2 µm optical communication, material processing and spectroscopy.

Vector soliton dynamics in a high-repetition-rate fiber laser

The existence of vector solitons that arise from the birefringence nature of optical fibers has been increasingly of interest for the stability of mode-locked fiber lasers, particularly for those operating in the high-fundamental-repetition-rate regime, where a large amount of fiber birefringence is required to restore the phase relation between the orthogonally polarized vector solitons, resulting in stable mode-locking free of polarization rotation. These vector solitons can exhibit diverse time-varying polarization dynamics, which prevent industrial and scientific applications requiring stable and uniform pulse trains at high fundamental repetition rates. This pressing issue, however, has so far been rarely studied. To this end, here we theoretically and experimentally dissect the formation of vector solitons in a GHz-repetition-rate fiber laser and investigate effective methods for suppressing roundtrip-to-roundtrip polarization dynamics. Our numerical model can predict both dynamic and stable regimes of high-repetition-rate mode-locking by varying the amount of fiber birefringence, resulting in the polarization rotation vector soliton (PRVS) and linearly polarized soliton (LPS), respectively. These dynamic behaviors are further studied by using an analytical approach. Interestingly, our theoretical results indicate a cavity-induced locking effect, which can be a complementary soliton trapping mechanism for the co-propagating solitons. Finally, these theoretical predications are experimentally verified, and we obtain both PRVS and LPS by adjusting the intracavity fiber birefringence.

Sub-200 fs, 344 MHz mode-locked Tm-doped fiber laser

We demonstrate a compact, self-starting mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser based on nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE), with a fundamental repetition rate of ∼344MHz and a pulse duration of ∼160fs. The generated pulses centered at ∼1975nm have a maximum output power of ∼560mW, corresponding to a pulse energy of ∼1.63nJ. To the best of our knowledge, the achieved repetition rate represents the highest value of fundamentally NPE mode-locked fiber lasers at ∼2µm, while the average output power is also higher than the previously reported 2 µm ultrafast single-mode fiber oscillators. The timing jitter in the integrated range [5 kHz, 10 MHz] and the integrated relative intensity noise in the range [10 Hz, 10 MHz] reach ∼35fs and ∼0.009%, respectively. Our high-performance laser is an ideal candidate for various applications, including mid-infrared frequency metrology and high-speed optical sampling.

High-power 2 GHz fs pulsed all-fiber amplified laser system at 2.0 µm

High-power femtosecond (fs)-pulsed all-fiber lasers operating at high repetition rates are highly demanded for various applications, including laser micromachining, nonlinear optical imaging, high-speed optical sampling, arbitrary waveform generation, and frequency metrology. However, their performance has long been limited by either the average power, repetition rate, pulse width, or compactness, which prevent practical applications. In this work, we report a high repetition rate fs-pulsed all-fiber laser at 2.0 µm that so far provides the best performance metrics, to the best of our knowledge, i.e., ∼2GHz fundamental repetition rate, 126 fs pulse width, ∼8W average power, and all-fiber configuration. We anticipate that this laser can be a promising fs-pulsed fiber laser source for applications requiring a GHz repetition rate.

Gain-guided soliton: Scaling repetition rate of passively modelocked Yb-doped fiber lasers to 12.5 GHz

Fundamental repetition rates of 3.1 GHz, 7.0 GHz, and 12.5 GHz in passively modelocked Yb-doped fiber lasers are demonstrated. To the best of our knowledge, the fundamental repetition rate of 12.5 GHz is the highest value for 1.0 μm mode-locked fiber lasers. The mode-locked oscillator has a peak wavelength of 1047.5 nm and a pulse duration of 1.9 ps. The repetition rate signal has a signal-to-noise ratio of 57 dB. The peak wavelength of mode-locked spectra gradually makes a blue-shift and the modelocked threshold power increases with an increase in pulse repetition rate. Furthermore, in contrast to most of the all-normal-dispersion mode-locked fiber lasers, the present linear resonator (e.g., length < 1 cm) allows the buildup of gain-guided soliton without any filter effect. To unveil the underlying pulse shaping mechanism, a combined model comprising dynamic rate equations and the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation is established. Surprisingly, an essential gain filtering effect, which is contributed by a 26-nm gain bandwidth, is revealed and can verify the gain-guided pulse dynamics. Moreover, the pulse build-up in temporal and frequency domain, like spectral evolution and gain bandwidths, is numerically carried out in detail.
