Ultrabroadband and coherent mid-infrared supercontinuum generation in Te-based chalcogenide tapered fiber with all-normal dispersion

On-chip octave-spanning flat supercontinuum in all-normal-dispersion silicon nitride waveguides

On-chip supercontinuum generators have emerged as an attractive optical source with small size, broad spectrum and high power efficiency. Nevertheless, there has long been a trade-off between spectral uniformity and bandwidth. We propose a novel silicon nitride waveguide with flat saddle-shaped all-normal dispersion, particularly for enhancing the nonlinear interactions over a wide band. By launching a 250-fs 30-kW input pulse, an ultra-flat (-6 dB) octave-spanning supercontinuum extending from 638 nm to 1477 nm can be generated. We analyze the performance of the supercontinuum generator in terms of spectral flatness and bandwidth under different input pulse conditions. Thanks to mature dispersion engineering, the pump wavelength can be flexibly selected within the flat dispersion region. The generated supercontinuum, therefore, can be applied to different spectral regions by shifting the center wavelength.

Multi-octave mid-infrared supercontinuum generation in tapered chalcogenide-glass rods

We report on the experimental development of short-tapered chalcogenide-glass rods for mid-infrared supercontinuum generation. Multi-octave spectral broadening of femtosecond laser pulses is demonstrated from 1.6 to 15.6 µm in a 5-cm-long tapered Ge20Se70Te10 rod with a waist diameter of 25 µm. Despite the multimode nature of the optical waveguide used, this work clearly shows the potential of such simple post-processed rods for advancing fiber SC sources with infrared glasses, thereby unlocking new possibilities in terms of coupling efficiency, spectral coverage, and output power.

Simulation and analysis of supercontinuum generation in the waveband up to 25 µm

The ultra-wideband supercontinuum generation (SCG) in a Te-based chalcogenide (ChG) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is simulated in the mid-infrared (MIR) waveband. The PCF core and cladding materials are Ge₂₀As₂₀Se₁₅Te₄₅ and Ge₂₀As₂₀Se₁₇Te₄₃, respectively. The supercontinuum (SC) broadening affected by the core diameter and fiber absorption is considered. The selected PCFs at different pumping wavelengths can demonstrate the generation of ultra-wideband MIR supercontinuum according to the simulated results. We consider SC broadening with and without fiber absorption. A SC range from 3 to 25 µm is demonstrated by simulation in a PCF with a core diameter of 8 µm and a pump wavelength of 6 µm considering the fiber absorption. With the increase of the peak power and the pulse width and the decrease of the core diameter, the degree of coherence gradually degraded. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of the possibility of SCG up to the waveband of 25 µm in fiber. Our results highlight the potential of a novel Te-based chalcogenide multi-material PCF for SCG. We also provide a way to generate the SCs to longer wavebands than 20 µm in fiber, especially up to the far-infrared waveband.

Advances in mid-infrared spectroscopy enabled by supercontinuum laser sources

Supercontinuum sources are all-fiber pulsed laser-driven systems that provide high power spectral densities within ultra-broadband spectral ranges. The tailored process of generating broadband, bright, and spectrally flat supercontinua-through a complex interplay of linear and non-linear processes-has been recently pushed further towards longer wavelengths and has evolved enough to enter the field of mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectroscopy. In this work, we review the current state and perspectives of this technology that offers laser-like emission properties and instantaneous broadband spectral coverage comparable to thermal emitters. We aim to go beyond a literature review. Thus, we first discuss the basic principles of supercontinuum sources and then provide an experimental part focusing on the quantification and analysis of intrinsic emission properties such as typical power spectral densities, brightness levels, spectral stability, and beam quality (to the best of the authors' knowledge, the M² factor for a mid-IR supercontinuum source is characterized for the first time). On this basis, we identify key competitive advantages of these alternative emitters for mid-IR spectroscopy over state-of-the-art technologies such as thermal sources or quantum cascade lasers. The specific features of supercontinuum radiation open up prospects of improving well-established techniques in mid-IR spectroscopy and trigger developments of novel analytical methods and instrumentation. The review concludes with a structured summary of recent advances and applications in various routine mid-IR spectroscopy scenarios that have benefited from the use of supercontinuum sources.

Low-noise octave-spanning mid-infrared supercontinuum generation in a multimode chalcogenide fiber

We demonstrate the generation of a low-noise, octave-spanning mid-infrared supercontinuum from 1700 to 4800 nm by injecting femtosecond pulses into the normal dispersion regime of a multimode step-index chalcogenide fiber with 100 µm core diameter. We conduct a systematic study of the intensity noise across the supercontinuum spectrum and show that the initial fluctuations of the pump laser are at most amplified by a factor of three. We also perform a comparison with the noise characteristics of an octave-spanning supercontinuum generated in the anomalous dispersion regime of a multimode fluoride fiber with similar core size and show that the normal dispersion supercontinuum in the multimode chalcogenide fiber has superior noise characteristics. Our results open up novel perspectives for many practical applications such as long-distance remote sensing where high power and low noise are paramount.

Temporal fine structure of all-normal dispersion fiber supercontinuum pulses caused by non-ideal pump pulse shapes

We experimentally investigate the spectro-temporal characteristics of coherent supercontinuum (SC) pulses generated in several implementations of silica and soft-glass all-normal dispersion (ANDi) photonic crystal fibers optimized for pumping with Erbium (Er):fiber femtosecond laser technology. We characterize the resulting SC using time-domain ptychography, which is especially suitable for the measurement of complex, spectrally broadband ultrashort pulses. The measurements of the ANDi SC pulses reveal intricate pulse shapes, considerable temporal fine structure, and oscillations on time scales of < 25 femtoseconds, which differ from the smoothness and simplicity of temporal profiles obtained in numerical simulations and observed in previous experiments. We link the measured complex features to temporal sub-structures of the pump pulse, such as pre- and post-pulses and low-level pedestals, which are common in high pulse energy ultrafast Er:fiber systems. We also observe spectro-temporal structures consistent with incoherent noise amplification in weakly birefringent fiber samples. Our results highlight the importance of the pump source and polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers for high-quality SC generation and have practical relevance for many ultrafast photonics applications employing ANDi fiber-based SC sources.

Coherent Mid-IR Supercontinuum Generation using Tapered Chalcogenide Step-Index Optical Fiber: Experiment and modelling

Mid-infrared region of electromagnetic spectrum has increased a lot of scientific and technical interest because of its utility to figure out the molecular fingerprints. Current mid-infrared light sources including quantum cascade lasers, thermal-emitters, and synchrotron radiation are not suitable for various potential applications where we require coherent, portable and broadband light sources. During the current decade, several efforts have been put forwarded to extend the spectral range of the supercontinuum. However, the coherent mid-infrared supercontinuum spectrum in the mid-infrared region has been demonstrated rarely. Here, we demonstrate a coherent mid-infrared supercontinuum using a tapered chalcogenide fiber pumped at various wavelength ranging from 2 µm to 2.6 µm. Experimental observations show that the supercontinuum spectrum extending from ~1.6 µm to 3.7 µm can be achieved using a 3 cm long tapered chalcogenide step-index optical fiber pumped with femtosecond laser pulses at 2.6 µm. To the best of our knowledge, using short pump wavelengths at 2 µm to 2.6 µm in an all-normal dispersion engineered chalcogenide glass fiber, the coherent supercontinuum spectrum has been reported first time. Such coherent broadband light source has its key prominence for the various prospective applications in the fields of bio-medical, sensing, and multiplex coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microspectroscopy.
