All-optical measurement of high-order fractional molecular echoes by high-order harmonic generation

Unveiling Nonsecular Collisional Dissipation of Molecular Alignment

We conducted a joint theoretical and experimental study to investigate the collisional dissipation of molecular alignment. By comparing experimental measurements to the quantum simulations, the nonsecular effect in the collision dissipation of molecular alignment was unveiled from the gas-density-dependent decay rates of the molecular alignment revival signals. Different from the conventional perspective that the nonsecular collisional effect rapidly fades within the initial few picoseconds following laser excitation, our simulations of the time-dependent decoherence process demonstrated that this effect can last for tens of picoseconds in the low-pressure regime. This extended timescale allows for the distinct identification of the nonsecular effect from molecular alignment signals. Our findings present the pioneering evidence that nonsecular molecular collisional dissipation can endure over an extended temporal span, challenging established concepts and strengthening our understanding of molecular dynamics within dissipative environments.

Rotational echo spectroscopy for accurate measurement of molecular alignment

We measure the molecular alignment induced in gas using molecular rotational echo spectroscopy. Our results show that the echo intensity and the time interval between the local extremas of the echo responses depend sensitively on the pump intensities and the initial molecular rotational temperature, respectively. This allows us to accurately extract these experimental parameters from the echo signals and then further determine the molecular alignment in experiments. The accuracy of our method has been verified by comparing the simulation with the extracted parameters from the molecular alignment experiment performed with a femtosecond pump pulse.

Multilevel quantum interference in the formation of high-order fractional molecular alignment echoes

We theoretically investigate the formation of the high-order fractional alignment echo in OCS molecule and systematically study the dependence of echo intensity on the intensities and time delay of the two excitation pulses. Our simulations reveal an intricate dependence of the intensity of high-order fractional alignment echo on the laser conditions. Based on the analysis with rotational density matrix, this intricate dependence is further demonstrated to arise from the interference of multiple quantum pathways that involve multilevel rotational transitions. Our result provides a comprehensive multilevel picture of the quantum dynamics of high-order fractional alignment echo in molecular ensembles, which will facilitate the development of "rotational echo spectroscopy."

Measuring the rotational temperature and pump intensity in molecular alignment experiments via high harmonic generation

We demonstrate a method to simultaneously measure the rotational temperature and pump intensity in laser-induced molecular alignment by the time-resolved high harmonic spectroscopy (HHS). It relies on the sensitive dependence of the arising times of the local minima and maxima of the harmonic yields at the rotational revivals on the pump intensity and rotational temperature. By measuring the arising times of these local extrema from the time-resolved harmonic signals, the rotational temperature and pump intensity can be accurately measured. We have demonstrated our method using N₂ molecules. The validity and robustness of our method are tested with different harmonic orders and by changing the gas pressures as well as the distance between the gas exit and the optical axis. Moreover, we have also demonstrated the versatility of our method by applying it to CO₂ molecules.

Revealing the effect of atomic orbitals on the phase distribution of an ionizing electron wave packet with circularly polarized two-color laser fields

We theoretically study the interference of photoelectrons released from atomic p_± orbitals in co-rotating and counter-rotating circularly polarized two-color laser pulses consisting of a strong 400-nm field and a weak 800-nm field. We find that in co-rotating fields the interference fringes in the photoelectron momentum distributions are nearly the same for p_± orbitals, while in counter-rotating fields the interference fringes for p₊ and p_- orbitals oscillate out of phase with respect to the electron emission angle. The simulations based on the strong-field approximation show a good agreement with the numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. We find that different phase distributions of the electron wave packets emitted from p₊ and p_- orbitals can be easily revealed by the counter-rotating circularly polarized two-color laser fields. We further show that the photoelectron interference patterns in the circularly polarized two-color laser fields record the time differences of the electron wave packets released within an optical cycle.

Generation of second harmonic Bessel beams through hybrid meta-axicons

Bessel beams are of great potential applications in many fields due to their non-diffraction and self-reconstruction. Here we firstly present a type of nonlinear meta-axicon to generate second harmonic Bessel beams. The nonlinear meta-axicons are based on Au/WS₂ hybrid nanostructures. Zero-order and first-order Bessel beams of second harmonic are generated under exciting of 810 nm femtosecond laser. In addition, the performances of the nonlinear meta-axicons, such as the second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency, non-diffracting distance and full width at half maximum (FWHM) are analyzed theoretically and experimentally. The experimental results are consistent with the predicted, which can enable miniaturized nonlinear optical devices related to generate nonlinear Bessel beams, having potential application in nonlinear optical manipulation, imaging and tractor beams.

Low-energy photoelectron interference structure in attosecond streaking

By numerically solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, we theoretically investigate the dynamics of the low-energy photoelectrons ionized by a single attosecond pulse in the presence of an infrared laser field. The obtained photoelectron momentum distributions exhibit complicated interference structures. With the semiclassical model, the originations for the different types of the interference structures are unambiguously identified. Moreover, by changing the time delay between the attosecond pulse and the infrared laser field, these interferences could be selectively enhanced or suppressed. This enables us to extract information about the ionization dynamics encoded in the interference structures. As an example, we show that the phase of the electron wave-packets ionized by the linearly and circularly polarized attosecond pulses can be extracted from the interference structures of the direct and the near-forward rescattering electrons.

Channel-closing effects of electronic excitation in solids

We investigate the electronic excitation of solids in strong fields by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The excitation probability exhibits a strong modulation as a function of laser intensity when the initial states fill in the whole valence band. To have a clear insight into the modulation, we further study the electronic excitation from a single eigenstate in solids. A series of resonance-like enhancements of excitation probability are produced by changing the laser intensity and wavelength. We attribute the resonance-like enhancements to the channel-closing effects in solids. It is shown that the excitation probability exhibits enhancements when the value of channel is odd for intracycle interference and an integer for intercycle interference. This is different from the atom that the enhancement occur in the integer channels. We also reveal that the channel-closing effects can be observed by solid high-order harmonic generation.

Coulomb focusing in retrapped ionization with near-circularly polarized laser field

The full three-dimensional photoelectron momentum distributions of argon are measured in intense near-circularly polarized laser fields. We observed that the transverse momentum distribution of ejected electrons by 410-nm near-circularly polarized field is unexpectedly narrowed with increasing laser intensity, which is contrary to the conventional rules predicted by adiabatic theory. By analyzing the momentum-resolved angular momentum distribution measured experimentally and the corresponding trajectories of ejected electrons semiclassically, the narrowing can be attributed to a temporary trapping and thereby focusing of a photoelectron by the atomic potential in a quasibound state. With the near-circularly polarized laser field, the strong Coulomb interaction with the rescattering electrons is avoided, thus the Coulomb focusing in the retrapped process is highlighted. We believe that these findings will facilitate understanding and steering electron dynamics in the Coulomb coupled system.

Control of the polarization direction of isolated attosecond pulses using inhomogeneous two-color fields

We theoretically demonstrate the control of the polarization direction of isolated attosecond pulses (IAPs) with inhomogeneous two-color fields synthesized by an 800-nm fundamental pulse and a 2000-nm control pulse having crossed linear polarizations. The results show that by using the temporally and spatially shaped field, the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) process can be efficiently controlled. An ultra-broad supercontinuum ranging from 150th to 400th harmonics which covers the water window region is generated. Such a supercontinuum supports the generation of a 64-as linearly polarized IAP, whose polarization direction is at about 45° with respect to the x axis. Moreover, we analyze the influence of the inhomogeneity parameters and the relative angle of the fundamental and control pulses on the IAP generation. It is shown that the polarization direction of the IAP can rotate in a wide range approximately from 8° to 90° relative to the x axis when the inhomogeneity parameters and the relative angle vary.

Low Threshold Optical Bistability in Aperiodic PT-Symmetric Lattices Composited with Fibonacci Sequence Dielectrics and Graphene

We explore the optical bistability in aperiodic parity–time-symmetric (PT-symmetric) photonic lattices that are composed of Fibonacci sequence dielectrics and graphene at terahertz frequencies. Two Fibonacci sequence dielectrics, viz. aperiodic photonic lattices, are utilized for enhancing band-edge resonances and achieving the electric field localization that can enhance the nonlinearity of graphene. Modulating the gain-loss factor of dielectrics in the PT symmetry lattices further strengthens the nonlinearity effect and, consequently, low threshold bistability is realized. The interval between the upper and lower bistability thresholds enlarges as the momentum relaxation time of graphene changes. Moreover, we show that the bistability threshold can also be flexibly tuned by modulating the graphene chemical potential. The study might be applied in photomemories and optical switches.

Two-dimensional photoelectron holography in strong-field tunneling ionization by counter rotating two-color circularly polarized laser pulses

Strong-field photoelectron holography (SFPH), originating from the interference of the direct electron and the rescattering electron in tunneling ionization, is a significant tool for probing structure and electronic dynamics in molecules. We theoretically study SFPH by counter rotating two-color circularly (CRTC) polarized laser pulses. Different from the case of the linearly polarized laser field, where the holographic structure in the photoelectron momentum distribution (PEMD) is clustered around the laser polarization direction, in the CRTC laser fields, the tunneling ionized electrons could recollide with the parent ion from different angles and thus the photoelectron hologram appears in the whole plane of laser polarization. This property enables structural information delivered by the electrons scattering the molecule from different angles to be recorded in the two-dimensional photoelectron hologram. Moreover, the electrons tunneling at different laser cycles are streaked to different angles in the two-dimensional polarization plane. This property enables us to probe the sub-cycle electronic dynamics in molecules over a long time window with the multiple-cycle CRTC laser pulses.
