Review of Random Fiber Lasers for Optical Fiber Sensors

A random fiber laser does not need a traditional resonant cavity and only uses the multiple scattering of disordered media to provide feedback to achieve laser output. Therefore, it has the advantages of a simple structure, narrow linewidth, and low noise and is particularly suitable for fiber optic sensors. This paper provides an introduction to the categories and corresponding principles of random fiber lasers. The research progress of random fiber lasers in the sensing field in recent years, including various aspects of random fiber lasers as low-noise light sources or sensitive elements for fiber sensing systems, is the main focus. Finally, the future development trend of random fiber lasers for optical fiber sensors is explored.

Narrow Linewidth Half-Open-Cavity Random Laser Assisted by a Three-Grating Ring Resonator for Strain Detection

A stabilized narrow-linewidth random fiber laser for strain detection, based on a three-grating ring (TGR) resonator and half-open-cavity structure, is proposed and investigated experimentally. The half-open-cavity structure proved to provide double optical gain of erbium-doped fiber, which was beneficial to increase the photon lifetime as well as further narrow the linewidth. Meanwhile, the stability and frequency noise of narrow lasing output was improved by suppressing the competition-induced undesired residual random lasing modes with the TGR resonator. The TGR resonator is composed of a double-cavity fiber Bragg grating Fabry-Perot (FBG-FP) interferometer, a section of single-mode fiber, and a circulator. The specially designed double-cavity FBG-FP interferometer embedded in the TGR resonator acted as the strain-sensing element and improved the resolution of the dynamic strain. A stable ultra-narrow linewidth of about 205 Hz was obtained. The frequency noise was reduced to about 2 Hz/√Hz. A high dynamic strain measuring resolution of 35 femto-strain (fε)/√Hz was achieved.

Random fiber laser based on a partial-reflection random fiber grating for high temperature sensing

A stable single wavelength random fiber laser (RFL) with a partial-reflection random fiber grating (PR-RFG) for high temperature sensing is proposed and demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The PR-RFG is fabricated with the help of a femtosecond laser, with its highest reflection peak significantly higher than all other reflection peaks, which can ensure the stability of this filter-free RFL. Theoretical calculations also show that such a PR-RFG should be designed with reflectivity in the range of ∼30%-90% to obtain one reflection peak significantly higher than other peaks. The threshold of this laser is only 6.4 mW. In addition, the RFL realizes temperature sensing in the range from 25°C to 500°C and has an optical signal-to-noise ratio of up to 70 dB.

Random Fiber Grating Characterization Based on OFDR and Transfer Matrix Method

Random fiber gratings (RFGs) have shown great potential applications in fiber sensing and random fiber lasers. However, a quantitative relationship between the degree of randomness of the RFG and its spectral response has never been analyzed. In this paper, two RFGs with different degrees of randomness are first characterized experimentally by optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR). Experimental results show that the high degree of randomness leads to low backscattering strength of the grating and strong strength fluctuations in the spatial domain. The local spectral response of the grating exhibits multiple peaks and a large peak wavelength variation range when its degree of randomness is high. The linewidth of its fine spectrum structures shows scaling behavior with the grating length. In order to find a quantitative relationship between the degree of randomness and spectrum property of RFG, entropy was introduced to describe the degree of randomness induced by period variation of the sub-grating. Simulation results showed that the average reflectivity of the RFG in dB scale decreased linearly with increased sub-grating entropy, when the measured wavelength range was smaller than the peak wavelength variation range of the sub-grating. The peak reflectivity of the RFG was determined by κ2LΔP (where κ is the coupling coefficient, L is the grating length, ΔP is period variation range of the sub-grating) rather than κL when ΔP is larger than 8 nm in the spatial domain. The experimental results agree well with the simulation results, which helps to optimize the RFG manufacturing processes for future applications in random fiber lasers and sensors.

This feature issue of Optics Express contains 17 articles expanding on recent advances in optical sensors presented at the eighth Asia-Pacific Optical Sensors Conference (APOS 2019) held in Auckland, New Zealand, from November 19 to 22, 2019. These articles span sensing for real-time positioning, refractive indices, strain, gas, and temperature using a variety of methods including photoacoustic computed tomography, coherent optical frequency-modulated continuous-wave interferometry, enhanced Bragg gratings, and phase-sensitive optical frequency-domain reflectometry.
