Fiber-interface directional coupler inscribed by femtosecond laser for refractive index measurements

Femtosecond laser writing of robust waveguides in optical fibers with enhanced photosensitivity

We report the femtosecond laser writing of meter-long optical waveguides inscribed through the coating of specifically designed optical fibers. In order to improve the material photosensitivity and to ensure non-guiding optical fibers for subsequent laser processing of the waveguiding core, a depressed refractive index core design is implemented by co-doping a large portion of the optical fiber with germanium oxide and fluorine. The enhanced photosensitivity provided by further deuterium loading these fibers allows laser-writing of large refractive index contrast waveguides over wide cross sections. To mitigate the formation of photoinduced color centers causing high propagation losses in the photo-written waveguides, thermal annealing up to 400°C is performed on polyimide-coated laser-written fibers. Although the refractive index contrast decreases, the propagation losses are drastically reduced down to 0.08 dB/cm at 900nm allowing a robust single-mode guiding from visible to near infrared. Our results pave the way towards the development of a new generation of optical fibers and photonic components with arbitrarily complex designs.

Ultrasensitive refractive index fiber sensor based on high-order harmonic Vernier effect and a cascaded FPI

This paper proposes and demonstrates an ultrasensitive refractive index (RI) sensor based on harmonic Vernier effect (HEV) and a cascaded Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI). The sensor is fabricated by sandwiching a hollow-core fiber (HCF) segment between a lead-in single-mode fiber (SMF) pigtail and a reflection SMF segment with an offset of 37 µm between two fiber centers to form a cascaded FPI structure, where the HCF is the sensing FPI, and the reflection SMF is the reference FPI. To excite the HEV, the optical path of the reference FPI must be multiple times (>1) that of the sensing FPI. Several sensors have been made to conduct RI measurements of gas and liquid. The sensor's ultrahigh RI sensitivity of up to ∼378000 nm/RIU can be achieved by reducing the detuning ratio of the optical path and increasing the harmonic order. This paper also proved that the proposed sensor with a harmonic order of up to 12 can increase the fabricated tolerances while achieving high sensitivity. The large fabrication tolerances greatly increase the manufacturing repeatability, reduce production costs, and make it easier to achieve high sensitivity. In addition, the proposed RI sensor has advantages of ultrahigh sensitivity, compactness, low production cost (large fabrication tolerances), and capability to detect gas and liquid samples. This sensor has promising potentials for biochemical sensing, gas or liquid concentration sensing, and environmental monitoring.

High-sensitivity vector bend sensor based on a fiber directional coupler inscribed by a femtosecond laser

In this Letter, we demonstrate a high-sensitivity vector bend sensor based on a fiber directional coupler. The fiber directional coupler is composed of two parallel waveguides inscribed within a no-core fiber (NCF) by a femtosecond laser. Since the two written waveguides have closely matched refractive indices and geometries, the transmission spectrum of the fiber directional coupler possesses periodic resonant dips. Such a fiber directional coupler exhibits a good bending-dependent spectral shift response due to its asymmetric structure. Experimental results show that bending sensitivities of -97.11 nm/m^-1 and 58.22 nm/m^-1 are achieved for the 0° and 180° orientations in the curvature range of 0-0.62 m^-1, respectively. In addition, the proposed fiber directional coupler is shown to be insensitive to external humidity changes, thus improving its suitability in high-accuracy bending measurements.

Ultrafast laser writing of arbitrary long low-loss waveguides in optical fibers

We propose an innovative femtosecond laser writing approach, based on a reel-to-reel configuration, allowing the fabrication of arbitrary long optical waveguides in coreless optical fibers directly through the coating. We report few meters long waveguides operating in the near-infrared (near-IR) with propagation losses as low as 0.055 ± 0.004 dB/cm at 700 nm. The refractive index distribution is shown to be homogeneous with a quasi-circular cross section, its contrast being controllable via the writing velocity. Our work paves the way for the direct fabrication of complex arrangements of cores in standard and exotic optical fibers.

In-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer and Bragg grating integrated by femtosecond laser for discrimination of temperature and directional torsion

Femtosecond laser micromachining has been considered as a powerful tool for fabricating versatile fiber devices and received increasing attention in recent years. Here, we report on a compact sensor by integrating a bridge-like waveguide inside a single-mode fiber to construct an in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer and then inscribing a second-order Bragg grating in the core of the same fiber. The interference dip shows good performance in torsion sensing - the maximum torsion sensitivity of 1.5573 nm/(rad/m), the ability to identify the torsion direction, and low perturbation of axial strain. In order to compensate the cross impact of temperature, the fiber Bragg grating dip is employed as the second indicator and combined with the interference dip for discriminating temperature and directional torsion simultaneously. The proposed device also has the merits such as compact size, high thermal stability, and so on.

Asia-Pacific Optical Sensors Conference: focus issue introduction

This feature issue of Optics Express contains 17 articles expanding on recent advances in optical sensors presented at the eighth Asia-Pacific Optical Sensors Conference (APOS 2019) held in Auckland, New Zealand, from November 19 to 22, 2019. These articles span sensing for real-time positioning, refractive indices, strain, gas, and temperature using a variety of methods including photoacoustic computed tomography, coherent optical frequency-modulated continuous-wave interferometry, enhanced Bragg gratings, and phase-sensitive optical frequency-domain reflectometry.
