Optical injection effects in electrically pumped semiconductor nano-laser arrays

A theoretical analysis is performed on the response of electrically pumped nano-laser arrays to external optical injection. The response to both continuous wave and modulated optical injection is explored. Continuous wave injection is shown to excite several varieties of dynamical behaviour in the array elements including regular dynamics and quasi-periodic behaviour. The strength of the optical injection, the frequency detuning between the injected light and the target laser, and the magnitude of the Purcell spontaneous emission enhancement factor are shown to markedly affect the dynamics. When subject to modulated optical injection, the effects of frequency detuning and optical injection strength are the focus of attention. It is shown that the elements of the array subject to modulated optical injection exhibit oscillatory behaviour over broad regimes determined by the optical injection strength and the frequency detuning.

Influence of Linewidth Enhancement Factor on the Nonlinear Dynamics and TDS Concealment of Semiconductor Ring Lasers

In this paper, the influences of linewidth enhancement factor on the output characteristics of a semiconductor ring laser (SRL) are numerically investigated. By constructing a master–slave injection model, we discuss the influence of linewidth enhancement factor on the output characteristics of SRL. In addition, the 0–1 chaos test is introduced to study the effects of linewidth enhancement factor, feedback strength, feedback time delay and normalized injection current on the dynamic characteristics of the master laser. Furthermore, a simulation study is carried out on the suppression of time delay characteristics by the linewidth enhancement factor. The results show that selecting a proper linewidth enhancement factor has a significant effect on the chaotic output of SRL, and a larger linewidth enhancement factor is beneficial for the concealment of time delay signature. Such results are beneficial for achieving the security chaos communication and physical random generators.

Period-One Laser Dynamics for Photonic Microwave Signal Generation and Applications

Due to the advantages of rich dynamics, small size, and easy integration, semiconductor lasers have many applications in microwave photonics. With a proper perturbation to invoke period-one (P1) nonlinear laser dynamics, a widely tunable microwave signal can be generated. In this paper, we concentrate on the realization and application of photonic microwave signal generation based on the P1 oscillation state of semiconductor lasers. Recent developments in P1 dynamics-based tunable microwave signal generation techniques are reviewed with an emphasis on the optical injection system, which has a large frequency tuning range that is far beyond the intrinsic relaxation oscillation frequency. In order to improve the spectral purity and stability of the generated microwave signal, two typical approaches are introduced, i.e., microwave modulation stabilization, and delayed feedback stabilization. Various applications of the P1 dynamics-based microwave signal generator in diverse signal generation and photonic microwave signal processing are described. Development trends of the P1 dynamics-based photonic microwave signal generator are also discussed.

Characterizing the chaotic dynamics of a semiconductor nanolaser subjected to FBG feedback

Nonlinear dynamics of semiconductor nanolasers subjected to distributed feedbacks from fiber Bragg grating (FBG) are investigated through modified rate equations, which include the unique Purcell cavity-enhanced spontaneous emission factor F and spontaneous emission coupling factor β. In the analysis, the effects of F, β, frequency detuning, feedback strength, feedback delay, FBG bandwidth and length on chaotic performance are evaluated. It is observed that the approach of FBG feedback outperforms mirror feedback in terms of concealing time-delay signature and increasing effective bandwidth by choosing intermediate feedback strength and frequency detuning. Additionally, chaotic regions and the corresponding chaotic characteristics are revealed by dynamical mappings of nanolasers subjected to FBG feedback. The results show that decreased F, β and increased FBG bandwidth can extend the parameter range of chaos. However, the variation of feedback delay and FBG length has no obvious effect on TDS suppression and effective bandwidth enhancement. Most importantly, high quality optical chaos with low TDS and high effective bandwidth induced by increased dispersion is obtained within broad parameter regions considered, which is beneficial to achieving chaos-based applications.

Analog-digital hybrid chaos-based long-haul coherent optical secure communication

We propose and numerically investigate a chaotic optical coherent secure communication scheme, which supports long-haul secure transmission for signals in advanced modulation formats. A hybrid optical chaos system is designed with coordination of digital and analog signals. The hybrid entropy source provides a broadband analog optical chaos signal, which could serve as the carrier to load quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) data. Simultaneously, a digital binary signal generated from the entropy source is transmitted to establish long-haul chaotic synchronization. Coherent detection is utilized at the receiver, and a digital signal processing (DSP) algorithm is adopted to reduce transmission distortion. A 5 Gbaud 16QAM signal is encrypted by a phase chaos carrier with the effective bandwidth of 5.8 GHz. A bit error rate (BER) below forward error correction (FEC) can be achieved after transmitting over 1600 km based on digital-signal-induced chaos synchronization technology. Optimal launch power is investigated to minimize nonlinear effects of transmission links. System security is guaranteed by the high dynamical complexity of the chaotic source and the sensitive time delay as the secret key.
