Structural and optical properties of monocrystalline and polycrystalline gold plasmonic nanorods

Optimal Geometry for Plasmonic Hot-Carrier Extraction in Metal-Semiconductor Nanocrystals

Plasmon-induced energy and charge transfer from metal nanostructures hold great potential for harvesting solar energy. Presently, the efficiencies of charge-carrier extraction are still low due to the competitive ultrafast mechanisms of plasmon relaxation. Using single-particle electron energy loss spectroscopy, we correlate the geometrical and compositional details of individual nanostructures to their carrier extraction efficiencies. By removing ensemble effects, we are able to show a direct structure-function relationship that permits the rational design of the most efficient metal-semiconductor nanostructures for energy harvesting applications. In particular, by developing a hybrid system comprising Au nanorods with epitaxially grown CdSe tips, we are able to control and enhance charge extraction. We show that optimal structures can have efficiencies as high as 45%. The quality of the Au-CdSe interface and the dimensions of the Au rod and CdSe tip are shown to be critical for achieving these high efficiencies of chemical interface damping.

Plasmonic Properties of Individual Gallium Nanoparticles

Gallium is a plasmonic material offering ultraviolet to near-infrared tunability, facile and scalable preparation, and good stability of nanoparticles. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the link between the shape and size of individual gallium nanoparticles and their optical properties. To this end, we utilize scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with electron energy loss spectroscopy. Lens-shaped gallium nanoparticles with a diameter between 10 and 200 nm were grown directly on a silicon nitride membrane using an effusion cell developed in house that was operated under ultra-high-vacuum conditions. We have experimentally proven that they support localized surface plasmon resonances and their dipole mode can be tuned through their size from the ultraviolet to near-infrared spectral region. The measurements are supported by numerical simulations using realistic particle shapes and sizes. Our results pave the way for future applications of gallium nanoparticles such as hyperspectral absorption of sunlight in energy harvesting or plasmon-enhanced luminescence of ultraviolet emitters.

Extremely confined gap plasmon modes: when nonlocality matters

Historically, the field of plasmonics has been relying on the framework of classical electrodynamics, with the local-response approximation of material response being applied even when dealing with nanoscale metallic structures. However, when the confinement of electromagnetic radiation approaches atomic scales, mesoscopic effects are anticipated to become observable, e.g., those associated with the nonlocal electrodynamic surface response of the electron gas. Here, we investigate nonlocal effects in propagating gap surface plasmon modes in ultrathin metal–dielectric–metal planar waveguides, exploiting monocrystalline gold flakes separated by atomic-layer-deposited aluminum oxide. We use scanning near-field optical microscopy to directly access the near-field of such confined gap plasmon modes and measure their dispersion relation via their complex-valued propagation constants. We compare our experimental findings with the predictions of the generalized nonlocal optical response theory to unveil signatures of nonlocal damping, which becomes appreciable for few-nanometer-sized dielectric gaps.

When approaching atomic-scale confinement of the electromagnetic radiation nonlocal effects are not negligible. Here the authors approach that regime, probing extremely confined gap plasmon modes by means of scanning near-field optical microscopy, and suggesting that quantum nonlocal corrections should be taken into account.
