Zero GVD slow-light originating from a strong coupling of one-way modes in double-channel magneto-optical photonic crystal waveguides

Mode-order conversion in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on Chern insulators

Mode-order conversion devices can provide a flexible platform to achieve mode coupling and optimizing in mode division multiplex (MDM) that can eliminate the restrain of capacity and density in photonic integration and communication. However, mode-order converters based on traditional photonic crystal (PC) waveguides are susceptible to defects, which always render device incapacitation in mode-order conversion. Herein, a mode converter designed by the Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structure is proposed to manipulate the conversion of topological edge states (TESs) based on Chern insulators consisting of gyromagnetic PCs. The back-and-forth conversion between fundamental and high-order modes is numerically demonstrated based on phase modulation in our proposed device, in which each mode can be immune to defects. This unique approach for converting the mode order of TES exploits a new perspective in MDM to design a high-performance multimode device, leading to potential applications in photonic integrated circuits (PIC), on-chip processors, and optical fiber communication.

Reversible Conversion of Odd/Even One-Way Modes in Magneto-Optical Photonic Crystal Double-Channel Waveguides

We have studied the transmission properties of odd/even one-way modes and their reversible conversion in a double-channel waveguide consisting of two magneto-optical photonic crystals (MOPCs) sandwiched with Al₂O₃ PC. There exist two pairs of even and odd modes, i.e., M1(even)/M2(odd) or M3(odd)/M4(even) modes, for the double-channel waveguides with one- or two-stranded coupling layer of Al₂O₃ rods, respectively. Among them, the M1, M2, and M3 modes are caused by the weak coupling strength of two sub-waveguides, while the M4 mode results from the strong coupling effect and supports dispersionless slow-light propagation. Furthermore, we realize the reversible conversion between odd and even modes (i.e., between M1 and M2 modes, or M3 and M4 modes) in the one- or two-stranded structure, respectively, by adjusting the length and position of the perfect electric conductor (PEC) defect properly to cause the desired significant phase delay along the upper and lower equivalent transmission paths. Additionally, we find that the robustness of the M1 even mode is poor because of extra excitations of counter-propagation modes near the right Brillouin boundary, while the other three modes have extremely strong robustness against PEC defects and their one-way transmittances are nearly 100%. These results hold promise for many fields, such as slow-light modulation and the design of topological devices.

Multimode interference in topological photonic heterostructure

In this Letter, topological photonic heterostructures, which are composed of finite-size photonic crystals with different topological phases, are proposed. The coupled topological edge states (CTESs), which originate from the coupling between topological edge states, are found. By using the finite element method, the multimode interference effect of CTESs is predicted and investigated. Paired and symmetrical interferences are discussed, and the respective imaging positions are calculated. In addition, the multimode interference effect is topologically protected when introducing disorders. As examples of application, frequency and power splitters of topological edge states based on the multimode interference effect are designed and demonstrated numerically. Our findings pave a new, to the best of our knowledge, way of designing topological photonic integrated circuit applications such as filters, couplers, multiplexers, and so on.
