Figures of merit for mid-IR evanescent-wave absorption sensors and their simulation by FEM methods

Volume detection based on porous silicon waveguide for CO2 mid-infrared spectroscopy

A mid-infrared (mid-IR) porous silicon (PSi) waveguide gas sensor was fabricated. PSi guiding and confinement layers were prepared by electrochemical anodization. Ridge waveguides were patterned using standard i-line photolithography and reactive ion etching. Due to the open pores, light and gas molecules interact in the inside volume, unlike bulk material in which the interaction takes place with the evanescent part of the light. Propagation losses are measured for a wavelength range spanning from λ = 3.9 to 4.55 µm with a value of 11.4 dB/cm at λ = 4.28 µm. The influence of native oxidation and ageing on the propagation losses was investigated. Limit of detection (LoD) of 1000 ppm is obtained with the waveguide sensor at the carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption peak at λ = 4.28 µm.

Confirmation of Dissipative Sensing Enhancement in a Microresonator Using Multimode Input

Optical microresonators have proven to be especially useful for sensing applications. In most cases, the sensing mechanism is dispersive, where the resonance frequency of a mode shifts in response to a change in the ambient index of refraction. It is also possible to conduct dissipative sensing, in which absorption by an analyte causes measurable changes in the mode linewidth and in the throughput dip depth. If the mode is overcoupled, the dip depth response can be more sensitive than the linewidth response, but overcoupling is not always easy to achieve. We have recently shown theoretically that using multimode input to the microresonator can enhance the dip-depth sensitivity by a factor of several thousand relative to that of single-mode input and by a factor of nearly 100 compared to the linewidth sensitivity. Here, we experimentally confirm these enhancements using an absorbing dye dissolved in methanol inside a hollow bottle resonator. We review the theory, describe the setup and procedure, detail the fabrication and characterization of an asymmetrically tapered fiber to produce multimode input, and present sensing enhancement results that agree with all the predictions of the theory.

Enhancement of Dissipative Sensing in a Microresonator Using Multimode Input

Optical whispering-gallery microresonators have proven to be especially useful as chemical sensors. Most applications involve dispersive sensing, such as the frequency shift of resonator modes in response to a change in the ambient index of refraction. However, the response to dissipative interaction can be even more sensitive than the dispersive response. Dissipative sensing is most often conducted via a change in the mode linewidth owing to absorption in the analyte, but the change in the throughput dip depth of a mode can provide better sensitivity. Dispersive sensing can be enhanced when the input to the microresonator consists of multiple fiber or waveguide modes. Here, we show that multimode input can enhance dip-depth dissipative sensing by an even greater factor. We demonstrate that the multimode-input response relative to single-mode-input response using the same fiber or waveguide can be enhanced by a factor of more than one thousand, independent of the mode linewidth, or quality factor (Q), of the mode. We also show that multimode input makes the dip-depth response nearly one hundred times more sensitive than the linewidth-change response. These enhancement factors are predicted by making only two measurements of dip depth in the absence of an analyte: one with the two input modes in phase with each other, and one with them out of phase.

Design of a Slab Tamm Plasmon Resonator Coupled to a Multistrip Array Waveguide for the Mid Infrared

In this work, we present and analyze a design of an absorber-waveguide system combining a highly sensitive waveguide array concept with a resonant selective absorber. The waveguide part is composed of an array of coupled strip waveguides and is therefore called a coupled strip array (CSA). The CSA is then coupled to the end of a slab Tamm plasmon (STP-) resonator, which is composed of a quasicrystal-like reflector formed by the patterning of a silicon slab and an interfacing tungsten slab. The concept describes an emitter-waveguide or waveguide-detector system featuring selective plasmon-enhanced resonant absorption or emission. These are crucial properties for corresponding optical on-chip integrated devices in context with evanescent field absorption sensing in fluids or gases, for example. Thus, the concept comprises a valuable and more cost-effective alternative to quantum cascade lasers. We designed the lateral dimensions of the STP resonator via a simple quasi-crystal approach and achieved strong narrowband resonances (emittance and Q-factors up to 85% and 88, respectively) for different silicon thicknesses and substrate materials (air and silicon oxide). Moreover, we analyze and discuss the sensitivity of the complete emitter-waveguide system in dependence on the slab thickness. This reveals the crucial correlation between the expected sensitivity assigned to the absorber-waveguide system and field confinement within the silicon.

Mode Sensitivity Exploration of Silica-Titania Waveguide for Refractive Index Sensing Applications

In this paper, a novel and cost-effective photonic platform based on silica–titania material is discussed. The silica–titania thin films were grown utilizing the sol–gel dip-coating method and characterized with the help of the prism-insertion technique. Afterwards, the mode sensitivity analysis of the silica–titania ridge waveguide is investigated via the finite element method. Silica–titania waveguide systems are highly attractive due to their ease of development, low fabrication cost, low propagation losses and operation in both visible and near-infrared wavelength ranges. Finally, a ring resonator (RR) sensor device was modelled for refractive index sensing applications, offering a sensitivity of 230 nm/RIU, a figure of merit (FOM) of 418.2 RIU⁻¹, and Q-factor of 2247.5 at the improved geometric parameters. We believe that the abovementioned integrated photonics platform is highly suitable for high-performance and economically reasonable optical sensing devices.
