Control of the spatial characteristics of femtosecond laser filamentation in glass via feedback-based wavefront shaping with an annular phase mask

Controlling nonlinear collapse of ellipticity and orientation of a co-variant vector optical field

A vector optical field with inhomogeneous spatial polarization distribution offers what we believe to be a new paradigm to form controllable filaments. However, it is challenging to steer multiple performances (e.g. number, orientation, and interval) of filaments in transparent nonlinear media at one time. Herein, we theoretically self-design and generate a kind of believed to be novel ellipticity and orientation co-variant vector optical field to interact with Kerr medium to solve this issue. The collapsing behaviors of such a new hybrid vector optical field reveal that, by judiciously adjusting the inherent topological charge and initial phase of incident optical field, we are able to give access to stable collapsing filamentation with tunable numbers, orientations and interval. Additionally, the collapsing patterns presented are immune nearly to the extra random noise. The relevant mechanism behind the collapse of the vector optical field is elucidated as well. The findings in this work may have huge potential in optical signal processing, laser machining, and other related applications.

Volume plasma grating by noncollinear interaction of femtosecond filament arrays

Stable propagation of multifilament arrays in transparent bulk media with adjustable separation distances between adjacent child filaments has always been desired for advanced manufacturing. Here, we report on the generation of an ionization-induced volume plasma grating (VPG) by the interaction of two batches of noncollinearly propagating arrays of multiple filaments (AMF). The VPG can externally arrange the propagation of the pulses along regular plasma waveguides via spatial reconstruction of electrical fields, which is compared with the self-formation of randomly distributed multiple filamentation originated from noises. The separation distances of filaments in VPG are controllable by readily changing the crossing angle of the excitation beams. In addition, an innovative method to efficiently fabricate multidimensional grating structures in transparent bulk media through laser modification using VPG was demonstrated.

Spatiospectral characterization of ultrafast pulse-beams by multiplexed broadband ptychography

Ultrafast pulse-beam characterization is critical for diverse scientific and industrial applications from micromachining to generating the highest intensity laser pulses. The four-dimensional structure of a pulse-beam, E~(x,y,z,ω), can be fully characterized by coupling spatiospectral metrology with spectral phase measurement. When temporal pulse dynamics are not of primary interest, spatiospectral characterization of a pulse-beam provides crucial information even without spectral phase. Here we demonstrate spatiospectral characterization of pulse-beams via multiplexed broadband ptychography. The complex spatial profiles of multiple spectral components, E~(x,y,ω), from modelocked Ti:sapphire and from extreme ultra-violet pulse-beams are reconstructed with minimum intervening optics and no refocusing. Critically, our technique does not require spectral filters, interferometers, or reference pulses.
