Efficient terahertz generation scheme in a thin-film lithium niobate-silicon hybrid platform

Simultaneous generation and manipulation of terahertz waves based on nonlinear leaky-waveguide antennas with integrated bianisotropic metasurfaces

We hereby propose and theoretically investigate a new scheme for simultaneous generation and manipulation of terahertz (THz) waves through difference frequency generation facilitated by a metasurface-assisted nonlinear leaky waveguide antenna. The proposed structure integrates a nonlinear optical waveguide, composed of multiple AlxGa1-xAs layers, with a THz leaky waveguide, wherein a bianisotropic metasurface realizes the radiating aperture. By explicitly utilizing the electric, magnetic, and magnetoelectric coupling responses of the metasurface, we demonstrate that the generated THz wave can be induced as a tightly confined, phase-matched guided mode for efficient generation of the THz wave. Additionally, this approach allows the THz wave to be transformed into a directive beam, radiating at a user-defined leakage rate and direction. Our numerical analyses suggest that THz beams ranging from 2.85 THz to 3.05 THz can be steered from 4 ∘ to 40 ∘, utilizing the inherent beam-steering capabilities of the leaky-waveguide antenna. Within this THz frequency spectrum, the phase matching condition is achieved by adjusting the optical wavelengths between 1.6μm and 1.52μm. In particular, the nonlinear conversion efficiency is 2.9 × 10-5 [1/W] at 3 THz.

Coherent FIR/THz wave generation and steering via surface-emitting thin film lithium niobate waveguides

Generating narrowband, continuous wave FIR/THz light via difference frequency generation (DFG) remains challenging due to material absorption and dispersion from optical phonons. The relatively new platform of thin film lithium niobate enables high-confinement nonlinear waveguides, reducing device size and potentially improving efficiency. We simulated surface-emitting DFG from 10 to 100 THz in a thin film lithium niobate waveguide with fixed poling period, demonstrating reasonable efficiency and bandwidth. Furthermore, adjusting wavelength and relative phase in an array of these waveguides enables beam steering along two directions. Continuous wave FIR/THz light can be efficiently generated and steered using these integrated devices.

χ(2) nonlinear photonics in integrated microresonators

Second-order (χ⁽²⁾) optical nonlinearity is one of the most common mechanisms for modulating and generating coherent light in photonic devices. Due to strong photon confinement and long photon lifetime, integrated microresonators have emerged as an ideal platform for investigation of nonlinear optical effects. However, existing silicon-based materials lack a χ⁽²⁾ response due to their centrosymmetric structures. A variety of novel material platforms possessing χ⁽²⁾ nonlinearity have been developed over the past two decades. This review comprehensively summarizes the progress of second-order nonlinear optical effects in integrated microresonators. First, the basic principles of χ⁽²⁾ nonlinear effects are introduced. Afterward, we highlight the commonly used χ⁽²⁾ nonlinear optical materials, including their material properties and respective functional devices. We also discuss the prospects and challenges of utilizing χ⁽²⁾ nonlinearity in the field of integrated microcavity photonics.

Terahertz waveform synthesis in integrated thin-film lithium niobate platform

Bridging the "terahertz gap" relies upon synthesizing arbitrary waveforms in the terahertz domain enabling applications that require both narrow band sources for sensing and few-cycle drives for classical and quantum objects. However, realization of custom-tailored waveforms needed for these applications is currently hindered due to limited flexibility for optical rectification of femtosecond pulses in bulk crystals. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that thin-film lithium niobate circuits provide a versatile solution for such waveform synthesis by combining the merits of complex integrated architectures, low-loss distribution of pump pulses on-chip, and an efficient optical rectification. Our distributed pulse phase-matching scheme grants shaping the temporal, spectral, phase, amplitude, and farfield characteristics of the emitted terahertz field through designer on-chip components. This strictly circumvents prior limitations caused by the phase-delay mismatch in conventional systems and relaxes the requirement for cumbersome spectral pre-engineering of the pumping light. We propose a toolbox of basic blocks that produce broadband emission up to 680 GHz and far-field amplitudes of a few V m-1 with adaptable phase and coherence properties by using near-infrared pump pulse energies below 100 pJ.

Scalable Fabrication of Nanogratings on GaP for Efficient Diffraction of Near-Infrared Pulses and Enhanced Terahertz Generation by Optical Rectification

We present a process flow for wafer-scale fabrication of a surface phase grating with sub-micron feature sizes from a single semiconductor material. We demonstrate this technique using a 110-oriented GaP semiconductor wafer with second-order nonlinearity to obtain a nanostructured device (800 nm lateral feature size and a 245 nm height modulation) with applications relevant to near-infrared optical diffraction and time-resolved terahertz (THz) technologies. The fabrication process involves a plasma-enhanced chemical deposition of a SiO2 layer on the wafer followed by contact photolithography and inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching (ICP-RIE). We discuss the required radiation dosage, exposure times, temperatures and other key parameters to achieve high-quality nanogratings in terms of filling ratio, edge profile, and overall shape. The phase-grating properties, such as the pitch, spatial homogeneity, and phase retardation, are characterized with an atomic force microscope, scanning electron microscope and a non-invasive optical evaluation of the optical diffraction efficiency into different orders. We demonstrate an application of this device in a time-domain THz spectroscopy scheme, where an enhanced THz spectral bandwidth is achieved by optical rectification of near-infrared laser pulses incident on the grating and efficiently diffracted into the first orders. Finally, the reported process flow has the potential to be applied to various materials by considering only slight adjustments to the ICP-RIE etching steps, paving the way to scalable fabrication of sub-micron patterns on a large range of substrates.

Propagation and Transformation of Vortexes in Linear and Nonlinear Radio-Photon Systems

The article is devoted to issues related to the propagation and transformation of vortexes in the optical range of frequency. Within the framework of the traditional and modified model of slowly varying envelope approximation (SVEA), the process of converting vortex beams of the optical domain into vortex beams of the terahertz radio range based on nonlinear generation of a difference frequency in a medium with a second-order susceptibility is considered. The modified SVEA splits a slowly varying amplitude into two factors, which makes it possible to more accurately describe the three-wave mixing process. The theoretical substantiation of the rule of vortex beams topological charges conversion is given—the topological charge of the output radio-vortex beam is equal to the difference between the topological charges of the input optical vortex beams. A numerical simulation model of the processes under consideration has been implemented and analyzed.
