Thin mini-LED backlight using reflective mirror dots with high luminance uniformity for mobile LCDs

The light distribution of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) generally resembles that of a Lambertian light source. When used as large-area light sources, the light distribution angle of LEDs must be modified through secondary optics design to achieve uniformity and minimize the number of light sources. However, secondary optical components pose several challenges such as demanding alignment accuracy, material aging, detachment, and lower reliability. Therefore, this paper proposes a primary optical design approach to achieve full-angle emission in LEDs without the need for lenses. The design employs a flip-chip as the light source and incorporates a V-shaped packaged structure, including a white wall layer, optical structure layers, and a V-shaped diffuse structure. With this design, the LEDs achieve full-angle emission without relying on lenses. Our experimental results demonstrated a peak intensity angle of 77.7°, a 20.3% decrease in the intensity of the central point ratio, and a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the light distribution of 175.5°. This design is particularly suitable for thin, large-area, and flexible backlight light sources. Moreover, the absence of secondary optical components allows for a thinner light source module.

Zero-optical-distance mini-LED backlight with light-guiding microstructure lens for extra-thin, large-area notebook LCDs

Mini-light-emitting diode (Mini-LED) backlight units (BLUs) in combination with high dynamic range technology can reduce energy and ensure high contrast and luminance. However, the number of LEDs used in mini-LED BLUs is considerably larger than the number of partitions in local dimming, resulting in low cost effectiveness. We proposed a design combining edge-light mini-LEDs and light-guiding microstructure lenses to reduce the number of light sources required in displays considerably. A 16-inch prototype was produced for experiments. The length, width, and thickness of the liquid crystal display module were 351.87, 225.75, and 1.709 mm, respectively. For edge-light mini-LEDs with a pitch of 8.6 mm, the average luminance was 18,836 nits for an input power of 22.5 watts, the uniformity was 85%, the uniformity merit function was 10.13, and the contrast ratio was 60,000:1. Thus, a zero-optical-distance (ZOD) mini-LED backlight for extra-thin, large-area notebook LCDs was produced.

Uniformity improvement of a mini-LED backlight by a quantum-dot color conversion film with nonuniform thickness

Mini-LED backlights energized by quantum-dot color conversion (QDCC) hold great potential for technological breakthroughs of liquid crystal displays. However, luminance uniformity issues should still be urgently solved owing to the large interval of direct-lit mini-LEDs, especially when covering with a QDCC film (QDCCF) with uniform thickness. Herein, we propose a uniformity improvement approach of mini-LED backlights by employing a QDCCF with nonuniform thickness based on the Lambertian distribution of mini-LEDs, which is demonstrated by screen-printing preparation and ray-tracing simulation. Experimental results show that the luminance uniformity of the nonuniform QDCCF can reach 89.91%, which is 24.92% higher than the uniform one. Ray-tracing simulation further elaborates the mechanism of this significant improvement. Finally, by employing this nonuniform QDCCF, a mini-LED backlight prototype is assembled and achieves high uniformity of 92.15%, good white balance with color coordinates of (0.3482, 0.3137), and high color gamut of 109% NTSC. This work should shed some new light on mini-LED-based display technology.

Accurate luminance and chromaticity controls of digital colors using CIE-based RGBW algorithms

Emerging high brightness of color displays and high signal-to-noise ratio of camera sensors require an addition of white (W) subpixels to ordinary red, green, and blue (RGB) subpixels. Conventional algorithms converting RGB signals to RGBW signals suffer from reduced chroma of highly saturated colors and complicated coordinate transformations between RGB color spaces and color spaces defined by the Commission internationale de l'éclairage (CIE). In this work, we developed a complete set of RGBW algorithms to digitally code a color in the CIE-based color spaces, making complicated processes including color space transformations and white balancing become largely unnecessary. The analytic three-dimensional gamut can be obtained so that the maximal hue and luminance of a digital frame could be simultaneously obtained. Exemplary applications in adaptive controls of the colors of an RGB display in accordance with the W component of background light validate our theory. The algorithm opens an avenue toward accurate manipulations of digital colors for RGBW sensors and displays.

Deep learning-enabled image content-adaptive field sequential color LCDs with mini-LED backlight

The mini-LED as the backlight of field sequential color LCD (FSC-LCD) enables high contrast, thin volume, and theoretically tripled light efficiency and resolution. However, color breakup (CBU) induced by a relative speed between an observer and the display severely limits the application of FSC-LCDs. Several driving algorithms have been proposed for CBU suppression, but their performance depends on image content. Moreover, their performance plateaus with increasing image segment number, preventing taking advantage of the massive segments introduced by mini-LEDs. Therefore, this study proposes an image content-adaptive driving algorithm for mini-LED FSC-LCDs. Deep learning-based image classification accurately determines the best FSC algorithm with the lowest CBU. In addition, the algorithm is heterogeneous that the image classification is independently performed in each segment, guaranteeing minimized CBU in all segments. We perform objective and subjective validation. Compared with the currently best algorithm, the proposed algorithm improves the performance in suppressing CBU by more than 20% using two evaluation metrics, supported by experiment-based subjective evaluation. Mini-LED FSC-LCDs driven by the proposed algorithm with outstanding CBU suppression can be ideal for display systems requiring high brightness and high resolution, such as head-up displays, virtual reality, and augmented reality displays.

Advanced liquid crystal devices for augmented reality and virtual reality displays: principles and applications

Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and photonic devices play a pivotal role to augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). The recently emerging high-dynamic-range (HDR) mini-LED backlit LCDs significantly boost the image quality and brightness and reduce the power consumption for VR displays. Such a light engine is particularly attractive for compensating the optical loss of pancake structure to achieve compact and lightweight VR headsets. On the other hand, high-resolution-density, and high-brightness liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) is a promising image source for the see-through AR displays, especially under high ambient lighting conditions. Meanwhile, the high-speed LCoS spatial light modulators open a new door for holographic displays and focal surface displays. Finally, the ultrathin planar diffractive LC optical elements, such as geometric phase LC grating and lens, have found useful applications in AR and VR for enhancing resolution, widening field-of-view, suppressing chromatic aberrations, creating multiplanes to overcome the vergence-accommodation conflict, and dynamic pupil steering to achieve gaze-matched Maxwellian displays, just to name a few. The operation principles, potential applications, and future challenges of these advanced LC devices will be discussed.

Application of Mini-LEDs with Microlens Arrays and Quantum Dot Film as Extra-Thin, Large-Area, and High-Luminance Backlight

The demand for extra-thin, large-area, and high-luminance flat-panel displays continues to grow, especially for portable displays such as gaming laptops and automotive displays. In this paper, we propose a design that includes a light guide layer with a microstructure above the mini-light-emitting diode light board. The light control microstructure of concave parabel-surface microlens arrays on a light-emitting surface increases the likelihood of total internal reflection occurring and improved the uniformity merit function. We used a 17 in prototype with quantum-dot and optical films to conduct our experiments, which revealed that the thickness of the module was only 1.98 mm. When the input power was 28.34 watts, the uniformity, average luminance, and CIE 1931 color space NTSC of the prototype reached 85%, 17,574 cd/m², and 105.37%, respectively. This module provided a flat light source that was extra thin and had high luminance and uniformity.

Mini-LED Backlight Technology Progress for Liquid Crystal Display

As consumers pursue higher display quality, Mini-LED backlight technology has become the focus of research in the current display field. With its size advantage (100–200 μm), it can achieve one-thousand-level divisional dimming, and it can also be combined with quantum dot technology to greatly improve the contrast, color gamut, dark state and other element of the display performance of LCD displays. Mini-LED backlight technology is undoubtedly the most ideal solution to realize a highly dynamic range display of LCD displays, and has been widely commercialized in many fields such as TVs, tablet computers, notebook computers, and car monitors. This review mainly introduces the efforts made by researchers to eliminate the halo effect, thinning of the backlight module and reducing the backlight power consumption. The application of quantum dot technology in backlight is also presented. We predict that the number of Mini-LED backlight partitions is expected to reach a level of more than 3000 in the future, further utilizing the advantages of the small size in local dimming, but it will also inevitably be challenged by some issues such as power consumption and heat dissipation.

Mini-LEDs with Diffuse Reflection Cavity Arrays and Quantum Dot Film for Thin, Large-Area, High-Luminance Flat Light Source

Mini-light-emitting diodes (mini-LEDs) were combined with multiple three-dimensional (3D) diffuse reflection cavity arrays (DRCAs) to produce thin, large-area, high-brightness, flat light source modules. The curvature of the 3D free-form DRCA was optimized to control its light path; this increased the distance between light sources and reduced the number of light sources used. Experiments with a 12.3-inch prototype indicated that 216 mini-LEDs were required for a 6 mm optical mixing distance to achieve a thin, large-area surface with high brightness, uniformity, and color saturation of 23,044 cd/m2, 90.13%, and 119.2, respectively. This module can serve as the local dimming backlight in next generation automotive displays.
