Waveguide-type see-through dual focus near-eye display with a polarization grating

Change in three-dimensional choroidal vessel network after AR device assisted 1-hour visual task in 2D/3D mode in young healthy subjects

PURPOSE

The purpose of the study was to investigate the changes of choroidal blood perfusion in different layers and quadrants and its possible related factors after 1 h visual task by augmented reality (AR) device in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) mode, respectively.

METHODS

Thirty healthy subjects aged 22-37 years watched the same video source in 2D and 3D mode separately using AR glasses for 1 h with a one-week interval. Swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA) was performed before and immediately after watching to acquire choroidal thickness (ChT), three-dimensional choroidal vascularity index (CVI) of large- and middle-sized choroidal vessels and choriocapillaris flow voids (FV%) at macular and peripapillary area. Near point of accommodation (NPA) and accommodative facility (AF) were examined to evaluate the accommodative ability. Pupil diameters by infrared-automated pupillometer under scotopic, mesopic and photopic condition were also obtained.

RESULTS

Compared with pre-visual task, the subfoveal CVI decreased from 0.406 ± 0.097 to 0.360 ± 0.102 after 2D watching (p < 0.001) and to 0.368 ± 0.102 after 3D watching (p = 0.002). Pupil sizes under different illuminance conditions became smaller after both 2D and 3D watching (all p < 0.001). AF increased after both 2D and 3D watching (both p < 0.05). NPA receded in post-3D watching (p = 0.017) while a not significant tendency was observed in post-2D.

CONCLUSION

A reduction in subfoveal choroidal blood flow accompanied with pupil constriction was observed immediately after 1 h visual task using AR glasses in 2D and 3D mode. Accommodative facility improved after 2D and 3D watching with AR glasses, whereas decrease in the maximum accommodation power was only found in 3D mode.

Metasurface Light-Emitting Diodes with Directional and Focused Emission

Phased-array metasurfaces enable the imprinting of complex beam structures onto coherent incident light. Recent demonstrations of photoluminescent phased-array metasurfaces highlight possibilities for achieving similar control in electroluminescent light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, phased-array metasurface LEDs have not yet been demonstrated owing to the complexities of integrating device stacks and electrodes within nanopatterned metasurfaces. Here, we demonstrate metasurface LEDs that emit directional or focused light. We first design nanoribbon elements that achieve the requisite phase control within typical LED device constraints. Subsequently, we demonstrate unidirectional emission that can be engineered at will via phased-array concepts. This control is further exhibited in metasurface LEDs that directly emit focused beams. Finally, we show that these metasurface LEDs exhibit external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) superior to those of unpatterned LEDs. These results demonstrate metasurface designs that are compatible with high-EQE metal-free LED devices and portend opportunities for new classes of metasurface LEDs that directly produce complex beam structures.

Gradient polarization volume grating with wide angular bandwidth for augmented reality

Angular bandwidth, which is critical to field-of-view, plays important role in diffractive optical waveguide augmented reality display. However, design and fabrication of large angular bandwidth is still a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a liquid crystal reflective gradient polarization volume grating with three-dimensional gradient periodic structure for waveguide near-eye display. Two-beam polarization interference with special designed periodic gradient photomask are applied to chiral-dopant reactive mesogens doped with ultraviolet dye for generating gradient three-dimensional configuration of liquid crystals, resulting in gradient polarization volume grating with extended angle bandwidth of 61° while keeping 80% diffraction efficiency, with peak efficiency near 100%. The proposed gradient polarization volume grating provides an effective method to broaden the angular bandwidth in waveguide for wide field-of-view augmented reality display.

Super multi-view near-eye display with a lightguide combiner

We propose a lightguide-type super multi-view near-eye display that uses a digital micromirror device and a LED array. The proposed method presents three-dimensional images with a natural monocular depth cue using a compact combiner optics which consists of a thin lightguide and holographic optical elements (HOEs). Feasibility of the proposed method is verified by optical experiments which demonstrate monocular three-dimensional image presentation over a wide depth range. We also analyze the degradation of the image quality stemming from the spectral spread of the HOEs and show its reduction by a pre-compensation exploiting an adaptive moment estimation (Adam) optimizer.

Multiplane holographic augmented reality head-up display with a real-virtual dual mode and large eyebox

We propose a multiplane augmented reality (AR) head-up display (HUD) with a real-virtual dual mode based on holographic optical elements (HOEs). The picture generation unit (PGU) is only a single free-focus projector, and the optical combiner includes a HOE lens (HOEL) for long-distance virtual image display and a HOE diffuser (HOED) for in-plane real image display. A HOED with directional scattering characteristics in the real image mode can significantly increase the size of the eyebox (EB) without increasing the size of the HOE, and a HOEL with a flexible design for the optical focal length in the virtual image mode can be used to achieve a different depth of the AR display. The proposed AR HUD system, which has a compact structure and offers high light transmittance, high energy usage, a multiplane display, and a large EB, is expected to be widely used in the future.

Holographic optical elements with a large adjustable focal length and an aberration correction

Holographic optical element (HOE) has the advantages of light weight, small volume and multiple functions, but the fixed focal length limits its application. The current methods of adjusting focal length suffer from the disadvantages of small adjustable range and the introduction of aberration. This paper proposes a design method for HOE, and it can compensate the aberrations of the reconstructed image for each distance in a large adjustable range. The focal length of HOE is adjusted by modulating the incident light through the wavefront modulator, and the aberration of the reconstructed image is corrected by optimizing the phase distribution of HOE and superimposing different compensation phases for different reconstruction distances. The reconstructed image experimentally moves without aberration in a large range, which demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed method. It is expected to be widely used in various optical fields where the focal length of HOE needs to be dynamically tuned.

Design, analysis and optimization of a waveguide-type near-eye display using a pin-mirror array and a concaved reflector

Waveguides have become one of the most promising optical combiners for see-through near-eye displays due to the thickness, weight, and transmittance. In this study, we propose a waveguide-type near-eye display using a pin-mirror array and a concaved reflector with a compact outlook, optimized image uniformity and stray light. Issues have been discussed in detail, which include field of view (FOV), eye-box, resolution, depth of field (DOF), display uniformity and stray light artifacts. It can be shown that the DOF can be extended (when compared with traditional waveguide-type near-eye displays) to alleviate the vergence-accommodation conflict (VAC) problem, and the uniformity & stray light can be improved with an optimal structure. Moreover, reflective surfaces have been introduced as the input and output coupling with a compact outlook, an easy-processing structure and the achromatic performance. A prototype based on the proposed method have been successfully developed, and virtual images with an extended DOF can be shown along with the real-world.
