Compact and efficient three-mode (de)multiplexer based on horizontal polymer waveguide couplers

Polymer-based three-waveguide polarization beam splitter with reduced crosstalk for optical circuitry

Polarization beam splitters are pivotal in manipulating polarized light within photonic integrated circuits for various optical applications. This study introduces a single-mode polarization beam splitter comprising three waveguides realized with polymer materials. The device optimization process employed the beam propagation method, explicitly using the RSoft CAD BeamProp solver. Our proposed beam splitter performs exceptionally well with 99% complete and null light transmission efficiency. In particular, it demonstrates minimal insertion loss (0.04 dB for complete transmission and 0.07 dB for null transmission) and low coupling loss (0.03 dB and 0.04 dB for complete transmission, 21.9 dB and 36.3 dB for null transmission from input to bridge and bridge to output waveguides, respectively). Additionally, the beam splitter showcases significantly reduced crosstalk: -27d B and -26.98d B for TE modes during complete light transfer, and -36.28d B and -33.61d B for TM modes during null light transfer. These results underscore its potential for advancing integrated optical systems.

Polarization manipulation on step-index composite polymer beam splitters for photonics circuitry

This paper presents composite beam splitters realized with polymer materials for developing photonic integrated circuits. We used organic-inorganic hybrid polymer materials to form this composite beam splitter realized with step-index (SI) core profiles. We used the alternating direction implicit technique of the Rsoft CAD BeamPROP solver to design and analyze these beam splitters. We successfully examined and manipulated the beam splitter's polarization dependency to obtain a 99% output efficiency with a 50:50 splitting ratio. The SI beam splitter exhibits an excess loss of 0.014 dB. When we apply polarized light in this beam splitter, the excess loss increases to 2 dB, and this loss gradually decreases as the angle of incident light increases. The excess loss reduces to 0.05 dB at the 31-degree angles of the incident polarized light. We also investigated the crosstalk of this beam splitter by varying the wavelength, and it is evident that the lowest crosstalk is -19.77 dB at the polarized angle of 31°.

Three-dimensional mode multiplexer based on adiabatic-tapered waveguides forming vertical directional couplers over C + L band and beyond

We present a mode multiplexer based on vertical directional couplers that are formed by adiabatic-tapered waveguides. We design and fabricate the device via the micro-fabrication processing to (de)multiplex the E₁₁, E₂₁, and E₁₂ modes from the few-mode bus waveguide. Our experimental device shows a coupling ratio higher than 98.6% and 97.0% for the E₂₁ and E₁₂ modes, respectively, over the C + L band and beyond. The modal cross talk of this device can be lower than -17.1 dB, -18.4 dB, and -15.1 dB caused by the unintended E₁₁, E₂₁, and E₁₂ modes, respectively. This mode multiplexer can work over a broader wavelength range with weak polarization sensitivity, which could be used in the mode-division-multiplexing systems where mode (de)multiplexing is required in the expanded communication wavelength window other than the C-band.

Efficient mode (de)multiplexer with two cascaded horizontal polymer waveguide directional couplers

In this paper, we present an efficient polymer two-mode (de)multiplexer with two cascaded horizontal waveguide asymmetric directional couplers (ADCs). Through extensive simulations, the optimized waveguide core dimensions were determined, and the distance L from the starting position of the first ADC to the cascaded position was 35300 µm. With the cascaded ADCs, the E21x mode of the wider waveguide was coupled into the E11x mode of the narrower waveguide with a coupling ratio of 96.73% at 1550 nm when the separation between the waveguide cores was 5 µm. The coupling ratio and extinction ratio of the fabricated (de)multiplexer reached a maximum of 96.12% and 14.21 dB at 1540 nm, respectively. The coupling ratios were greater than 90% in the wavelength range 1533-1565 nm with a minimum insertion loss of 9.75 dB. The influence of different cascaded positions on the mode coupling ratio, mainly caused by the large phase difference between the modes owing to the slowly varying envelope approximation, is analyzed theoretically and verified experimentally. The proposed cascaded two-mode (de)multiplexer can reduce the preparation process requirements and increase the channel capacity of optical communication systems.

Metal-printing tunable interlayer waveguide coupler using low-loss fluorinated polycarbonate

Tunable three-dimensional (3D) integrated optical waveguide chips with optical interconnection function are beneficial to expand the application of optical devices in a 3D integrated photonic module. Here, we propose a thermo-optic (TO) tunable interlayer waveguide coupler based on the metal-printing technique. Low-loss fluorinated polycarbonate (AF-Ali-PC MA) and poly (methyl methacrylate-glycidyl methacrylate) [P(MMA-co-GMA)] are synthesized as waveguide core and cladding layer, respectively. The thermal stability and optical adsorption characteristics of AF-Ali-PC MA are analyzed. Optical signal transmission features of the interlayer coupling waveguides are simulated. The optical response properties and fabrication process flows of a dynamic multilayer waveguide chip can be greatly improved by the metal-printing technique. The on-off time of the TO interlayer coupling chip is obtained as 250 µs, and the electrical power consumption is measured as 7.6 mW. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a TO tunable interlayer waveguide coupler is achieved by an efficient metal-printing method, which is suitable for large-scale photonic integrated circuit (PIC) systems and multilayer optical interconnection (OXC) networks.

Thermally resettable laser transmission induced transparency in polymer waveguides at 635 nm

Laser transmission induced transparency (LTIT) has been observed in a polymer waveguide using commercial perfluorinated acrylate-based materials when a continuous-wave laser at 635 nm is injected. The transmitted optical power increases continuously and follows a non-linear curve with respect to the laser injection time. Loss reduction over 13 dB is observed within 60 min at a moderate laser power of 5 mW. While higher injection power leads to a quicker change of the waveguide transparency, this loss reduction tends to saturate at a level irrelevant to the injection power. Further experiments demonstrate that a laser injection at 635 nm can also slightly improve the transparency at near-infrared wavelengths from 1500 nm to 1600 nm which is also the target wavelength range for this material. The state after a certain laser injection dose of 635 nm proves to be stable and the transmission characteristics of the polymer waveguide can be maintained and will continue after being stored at room temperature over a long period of time. By baking the waveguide at 200 °C for 20 min, the transparency property can be reset and the waveguide will return to the original high-loss state of 635 nm. These unique properties can be attributed to the photo-induced generation and thermally induced recombination of free radicals in the organic material. Our discovery may trigger interesting applications of polymer waveguides in the development of optical memory, clock, and encryption devices, beyond their target applications in optical communication.
