Topological photonic crystal nanowire array laser with bulk states

A topological photonic crystal InGaAsP/InP core-shell nanowire array laser with bulk states operating in the 1550 nm band is proposed and simulated. By optimizing the structure parameters, high Q factor of 1.2 × 105 and side-mode suppression ratio of 13.2 dB are obtained, which are 28.6 and 4.6 times that of a uniform nanowire array, respectively. The threshold and maximum output are 17% lower and 613% higher than that of the uniform nanowire array laser, respectively, due to the narrower nanowire slits and stronger optical confinement. In addition, a low beam divergence angle of 2° is obtained due to the topological protection. This work may pave the way for the development of high-output, low-threshold, low-beam-divergence nanolasers.

Topological phases and non-Hermitian topology in tunable nonreciprocal cyclic three-mode optical systems

We propose a method for simulating a 1D non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with modulated nonreciprocal hopping using a cyclic three-mode optical system. The current system exhibits different localization of topologically nontrivial phases, which can be characterized by the winding number. We find that the eigenenergies of such a system undergo a real-complex transition as the nonreciprocal hopping changes, accompanied by a non-Bloch parity-time symmetry breaking. We explain this phase transition by considering the evolution of saddle points on the complex energy plan and the ratio of complex eigenenergies. Additionally, we demonstrate that the skin states resulting from the non-Hermitian skin effect possess higher-order exceptional points under the critical point of the non-Bloch parity-time phase transition. Furthermore, we investigate the non-Hermitian skin phase transition by the directional mean inverse participation ratio and the generalized Brillouin zone. This work provides an alternative way to investigate the novel topological and non-Hermitian effects in nonreciprocal optical systems.

Sum and difference frequency generation in a valley-photonic-crystal-like topological system

Nonlinear sum frequency generation (SFG) and difference frequency generation (DFG) are fundamental methods to obtain new light sources for various applications. However, most of the on-chip SFG and DFG are based on conventional resonators, lacking robustness against fabrication defects. Here, we demonstrate topologically protected SFG and DFG in a second-order topological photonic system. The mechanism is based on the nonlinear interaction between three high-Q corner modes inside dual topological band gaps. The frequency matching condition for SFG and DFG is precisely satisfied by designing a valley-photonic-crystal-like topological system, which provides more freedoms to tune the corner modes. The topological SFG and DFG are achieved with high conversion efficiency, and the underlying topological physics is revealed. This work opens up avenues toward topologically protected nonlinear frequency conversion, and can find applications in the fields of on-chip single-photon detections and optical quantum memories with robustness against defects.

Large transmittance contrast via 90-degree sharp bends in square lattice glide-symmetric photonic crystal waveguides

We demonstrate an intriguing transmittance contrast in a glide-symmetric square-lattice photonic crystal waveguide with a 90-degree sharp bend. The glide-symmetry gives rise to a degeneracy point in the band structure and separates a high-frequency and a low-frequency band. Previously, a similar large transmittance contrast between these two bands has been observed in glide-symmetric triangular- or honeycomb-lattice photonic crystals without inversion symmetry, and this phenomenon has been attributed to the valley-photonic effect. In this study, we demonstrate the first example of this phenomenon in square-lattice photonic crystals, which do not possess the valley effect. Our result sheds new light onto unexplored properties of glide-symmetric waveguides. We show that this phenomenon is related to the spatial distribution of circular polarization singularities in glide-symmetric waveguides. This work expands the possible designs of low-loss photonic circuits and provides a new understanding of light transmission via sharp bends in photonic crystal waveguides.

Topological photonic crystal nanowire array laser with edge states

A topological photonic crystal InGaAsP/InP core-shell nanowire array laser operating in the 1550 nm wavelength band is proposed and simulated. The structure is composed of an inner topological nontrivial photonic crystal and outer topological trivial photonic crystal. For a nanowire with height of 8 µm, high quality factor of 4.7 × 104 and side-mode suppression ratio of 11 dB are obtained, approximately 32.9 and 5.5 times that of the uniform photonic crystal nanowire array, respectively. Under optical pumping, the topological nanowire array laser exhibits a threshold 27.3% lower than that of the uniform nanowire array laser, due to the smaller nanowire slit width and stronger optical confinement. Moreover, the topological NW laser exhibits high tolerence to manufacturing errors. This work may pave the way for the development of low-threshold single-mode high-robustness nanolasers.

Interfacial topological photonics: broadband silicon waveguides for THz 6G communication and beyond

Topological photonics has expanded our understanding of electromagnetic wave propagation and unraveled new methods of electromagnetic wave shaping. Among the various topological photonic systems, valley photonic crystal (VPC) is a highly versatile platform for constructing interfaces that supports unidirectional edge state to enable the robust topological transport of light. Although silicon VPC waveguides has demonstrated the lossless propagation of terahertz (THz) waves through multiple sharp bends, existing designs are mostly based on the standard zigzag-interface. Here, we explore interfacial topological photonics by designing a composite interface junction for an air-slot-like VPC waveguide with a 60° bend and an unchanging bearded-interface to allow the topologically protected propagation of THz waves over a 20% relative bandwidth. We employ particle swarm optimization to design the geometry of a bearded-interface silicon VPC waveguide to achieve a 42% relative bandgap and a topological edge state spanning a usable 25% relative bandwidth. Our work illustrates the prospects and challenges of interfacial topological photonics in the design of broadband silicon topological waveguides for potential applications across the electromagnetic spectrum, including the on-chip THz sixth-generation (6G) communication.
