VO2-enabled transmission-reflection switchable coding terahertz metamaterials

Reprogrammable reflection-transmission integrated coding metasurface for real-time terahertz wavefront manipulations in full-space

In recent years, there has been notable advancement in programmable metasurfaces, primarily attributed to their cost-effectiveness and capacity to manipulate electromagnetic (EM) waves. Nevertheless, a significant limitation of numerous available metasurfaces is their capability to influence wavefronts only in reflection mode or transmission mode, thus catering to only half of the spatial coverage. To the best of our knowledge and for the first time, a novel graphene-assisted reprogrammable metasurface that offers the unprecedented capability to independently and concurrently manipulate EM waves within both half-spaces has been introduced in the THz frequency band. This intelligent programmable metasurface achieves wavefront control in reflection mode, transmission mode, and the concurrent reflection-transmission mode, all within the same polarization and frequency channel. The meta-atom is constructed with two graphene sections, enabling straightforward modification of wave behavior by adjusting the chemical potential distribution within each graphene segment via an external electronic source. The proposed functionalities encompass various programmable modes, including single and dual beam control in reflection mode, dual beam control in transmission mode, simultaneous control of dual beams in reflection mode-direct transmission, and vice versa, and control of beam steering in reflection mode-dual beams in transmission mode simultaneously. The proposed metasurface is expected to be reprogrammable due to wavefront manipulation in both half-spaces separately and continuously for various applications such as imaging systems, encryption, miniaturized systems, and next-generation wireless intelligent communications.

Frequency regulated transmission-reflection integration modes of a terahertz metasurface

The conventional transmission and reflection operating mode switching metasurface depends on phase change materials, which are often difficult to integrate with metasurface devices and work in real time. Here, we propose an integration of a transmission-reflection metasurface that can dynamically control beam direction and functions in both transmission and reflection modes by varying the frequency of the incident wave. Remarkably, the transmission and reflection modes of terahertz beam manipulation can be obtained by illuminating only the transmission side of the metasurface. The full-wave simulation results are in good agreement with the theoretically calculated results, which verifies the terahertz wave manipulation capability of the proposed structure. This metasurface provides a design method for full-space terahertz beam regulation devices.

Terahertz vortex beam generator carrying orbital angular momentum in both transmission and reflection spaces

Vortex beam generators carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) with both transmission and reflection modes has broad application prospects in full-space high data capacity communication and orbital angular momentum multiplexing systems. In this work, we proposed a vanadium dioxide (VO₂) assisted metasurface to independently produce and manipulate focused vortex transmission-reflection modes with different number of beams and focal lengths under right-handed circular polarized (RCP) wave incidence. The proposed metasurface generates the diagonal vortex beams, four vortex beams, and focused vortex beam for transmission mode at 1.26THz and reflection mode at 1.06THz by changing phase state of the VO₂. Our work may find many potential applications in future high data capacity information multiplexing communication systems.
