Dual-function photonic spin Hall effect sensor for high-precision refractive index sensing and graphene layer detection

High-Sensitivity Janus Sensor Enabled by Multilayered Metastructure Based on the Photonic Spin Hall Effect and Its Potential Applications in Bio-Sensing

The refractive index (RI) of biological tissues is a fundamental material parameter that characterizes how light interacts with tissues, making accurate measurement of RI crucial for biomedical diagnostics and environmental monitoring. A Janus sensor (JBS) is designed in this paper, and the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) is used to detect subtle changes in RI in biological tissues. The asymmetric arrangement of the dielectric layers breaks spatial parity symmetry, resulting in significantly different PSHE displacements during the forward and backward propagation of electromagnetic waves, thereby realizing the Janus effect. The designed JBS can detect the RI range of 1.3~1.55 RIU when electromagnetic waves are incident along the +z-axis, with a sensitivity of 96.29°/refractive index unit (RIU). In the reverse direction, blood glucose concentrations are identified by the JBS, achieving a sensitivity of 18.30°/RIU. Detecting different RI range from forward and backward scales not only overcomes the limitation that single-scale sensors can only detect a single RI range, but also provides new insights and applications for optical biological detection through high-sensitivity, label-free and non-contact detection.

Multiple Physical Quantities Janus Metastructure Sensor Based on PSHE

In this paper, a Janus metastructure sensor (JMS) based on the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE), which can detect multiple physical quantities, is proposed. The Janus property is derived from the fact that the asymmetric arrangement of different dielectrics breaks the structure parity. Hence, the metastructure is endowed with different detection performances for physical quantities on multiple scales, broadening the range and improving the accuracy of the detection. When electromagnetic waves (EWs) are incident from the forward scale of the JMS, the refractive index, thickness, and incidence angle can be detected by locking the angle corresponding to the PSHE displacement peak that is enhanced by the graphene. The relevant detection ranges are 2~2.4, 2~2.35 μm, and 27°~47°, with sensitivities (S) of 81.35°/RIU, 64.84°/μm, and 0.02238 THz/°, respectively. Under the condition that EWs incident into the JMS from the backward direction, the JMS can also detect the same physical quantities with different sensing properties, such as S of 99.3°/RIU, 70.07°/μm, and 0.02348 THz/° in corresponding detection ranges of 2~2.09, 1.85~2.02 μm, and 20°~40°. This novel multifunctional JMS is a supplement to the traditional single-function sensor and has a certain prospect in the field of multiscenario applications.

A Systematic Review of Mobile Phone Data in Crime Applications: A Coherent Taxonomy Based on Data Types and Analysis Perspectives, Challenges, and Future Research Directions

Digital technologies have recently become more advanced, allowing for the development of social networking sites and applications. Despite these advancements, phone calls and text messages still make up the largest proportion of mobile data usage. It is possible to study human communication behaviors and mobility patterns using the useful information that mobile phone data provide. Specifically, the digital traces left by the large number of mobile devices provide important information that facilitates a deeper understanding of human behavior and mobility configurations for researchers in various fields, such as criminology, urban sensing, transportation planning, and healthcare. Mobile phone data record significant spatiotemporal (i.e., geospatial and time-related data) and communication (i.e., call) information. These can be used to achieve different research objectives and form the basis of various practical applications, including human mobility models based on spatiotemporal interactions, real-time identification of criminal activities, inference of friendship interactions, and density distribution estimation. The present research primarily reviews studies that have employed mobile phone data to investigate, assess, and predict human communication and mobility patterns in the context of crime prevention. These investigations have sought, for example, to detect suspicious activities, identify criminal networks, and predict crime, as well as understand human communication and mobility patterns in urban sensing applications. To achieve this, a systematic literature review was conducted on crime research studies that were published between 2014 and 2022 and listed in eight electronic databases. In this review, we evaluated the most advanced methods and techniques used in recent criminology applications based on mobile phone data and the benefits of using this information to predict crime and detect suspected criminals. The results of this literature review contribute to improving the existing understanding of where and how populations live and socialize and how to classify individuals based on their mobility patterns. The results show extraordinary growth in studies that utilized mobile phone data to study human mobility and movement patterns compared to studies that used the data to infer communication behaviors. This observation can be attributed to privacy concerns related to acquiring call detail records (CDRs). Additionally, most of the studies used census and survey data for data validation. The results show that social network analysis tools and techniques have been widely employed to detect criminal networks and urban communities. In addition, correlation analysis has been used to investigate spatial-temporal patterns of crime, and ambient population measures have a significant impact on crime rates.

Effect of the incident polarization on in-plane and out-of-plane spin splitting near the critical angle

To reveal the effect of the incident polarization on the spin splitting of the photonic spin Hall effect (that is, the spatial and angular in-plane and out-of-plane spin splitting), we systematically study the phenomena and characteristics of these four spin splitting generated when the beam with arbitrary linear polarization is reflected from the non-absorbing medium interface and the absorbing medium interface. Several features of the relationship between the incident polarization and the four kinds of spin splitting are found. In addition, It is also found that the in-plane angular and spatial shifts are significantly enhanced near the critical angle, even reaching their theoretical upper limit. However, the out-of-plane shifts are not enhanced. The research in this paper will contribute to a deeper understanding of PSHE. These findings can also provide new ideas and methods for precision metrology, photonic manipulation, and photonic device fabrication.
