High-power soliton fiber laser based on pulse width control with chirped fiber Bragg gratings

Wavelength-stabilized tunable mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser beyond 2 µm

We report the development of a widely tunable mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser based on a robust chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG). By applying mechanical tension and compression to the CFBG, an overall tunability of 20.1 nm, spanning from 2022.1 nm to 2042.2 nm, was achieved. The observed mode-locked pulse train from this fiber laser has a repetition rate of 9.4 MHz with an average power of 12.6 dBm and a pulse duration between 9.0 ps and 12.8 ps, depending on the central wavelength. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a tunable mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser operating beyond 2 µm using a CFBG as a wavelength-selective element.

Direct infrared femtosecond laser inscription of chirped fiber Bragg gratings

We compare and contrast novel techniques for the fabrication of chirped broadband fiber Bragg gratings by ultrafast laser inscription. These methods enable the inscription of gratings with flexible period profiles and thus tailored reflection and dispersion characteristics in non-photosensitive optical fibers. Up to 19.5 cm long chirped gratings with a spectral bandwidth of up to 30 nm were fabricated and the grating dispersion was characterized. A maximum group delay of almost 2 ns was obtained for linearly chirped gratings with either normal or anomalous group velocity dispersion, demonstrating the potential for using these gratings for dispersion compensation. Coupling to cladding modes was reduced by careful design of the inscribed modification features.

Distributed ultrafast fibre laser

A traditional ultrafast fibre laser has a constant cavity length that is independent of the pulse wavelength. The investigation of distributed ultrafast (DUF) lasers is conceptually and technically challenging and of great interest because the laser cavity length and fundamental cavity frequency are changeable based on the wavelength. Here, we propose and demonstrate a DUF fibre laser based on a linearly chirped fibre Bragg grating, where the total cavity length is linearly changeable as a function of the pulse wavelength. The spectral sidebands in DUF lasers are enhanced greatly, including the continuous-wave (CW) and pulse components. We observe that all sidebands of the pulse experience the same round-trip time although they have different round-trip distances and refractive indices. The pulse-shaping of the DUF laser is dominated by the dissipative processes in addition to the phase modulations, which makes our ultrafast laser simple and stable. This laser provides a simple, stable, low-cost, ultrafast-pulsed source with controllable and changeable cavity frequency.

Ultrashort pulses from an all-fiber ring laser incorporating a pair of chirped fiber Bragg gratings

By incorporating two linearly chirped ultrabroadband fiber Bragg gratings of opposite dispersion in an all-fiber ring laser, we demonstrate a mode-locking regime in which a femtosecond pulse evolving in the normal dispersion gain segment is locally transformed into a highly chirped picosecond pulse that propagates in the remaining section of the cavity. By minimizing nonlinear effects and avoiding soliton pulse shaping in this anomalous-dispersion section, low repetition rate fiber lasers can be made to produce high-energy ultrashort pulses. Using this approach, 98 fs pulses with 0.96 nJ of energy are obtained from an erbium-doped fiber laser operated in the highly anomalous dispersion regime at a repetition rate of 9.4 MHz.

Experimental and numerical studies of mode-locked fiber laser with large normal and anomalous dispersion

An ytterbium-doped mode-locked fiber laser was demonstrated with a chirped fiber Bragg grating for dispersion management. The cavity net dispersion could be changed from large normal dispersion (2.4 ps(2)) to large anomalous dispersion (-2.0 ps(2)), depending on the direction of the chirped Bragg grating in laser cavity. The proposed fiber lasers with large normal dispersion generated stable pulses with a pulse width of <1.1 ns and a pulse energy of 1.5 nJ. The laser with large anomalous dispersion generated wavelength-tunable soliton with a pulse width of 2.7 ps and pulse energy of 0.13 nJ. A theoretical model was established and used to verify the experimental observations.

Highly efficient femtosecond pulse stretching by tailoring cavity dispersion in erbium fiber lasers with an intracavity short-pass edge filter

We demonstrate highly efficient pulse stretching in Er(3+)-doped femtosecond mode-locked fiber lasers by tailoring cavity dispersion using an intracavity short-pass edge filter. The cavity dispersion is preset at around zero to obtain the shortest pulsewidth. When the cutoff wavelength of the short-pass edge filter is thermo-optically tuned to overlap the constituting spectral components of mode-locked pulses, large negative waveguide dispersion is introduced by the steep cutoff slope and the total cavity dispersion is moved to normal dispersion regime to broaden the pulsewidth. The time-bandwidth product of the mode-locked pulse increases with the decreasing temperature at the optical liquid surrounding the short-pass edge filter. Pulse stretch ratio of 3.53 (623.8 fs/176.8 fs) can be efficiently achieved under a temperature variation of 4 °C.

Cladding-pumped passive harmonically mode-locked fiber laser

A passive harmonically mode-locked fiber laser cladding pumped by a broad-area diode-laser array is described. Harmonic mode locking is obtained in a frequency range from 33.3 to 128.6 MHz, where the higher frequency limit is imposed because of insufficient available pump power. The maximum pulse jitter in one cavity roundtrip time is between 300 and 50 ps in the whole frequency range, and the sidebands in the frequency domain are suppressed by as much as 50 dB. 600-fs bandwidth-limited pulses with pulse energies of as much as 20 pJ are obtained, giving rise to an average output power as great as 2.5 mW.

Cladding-pumped passively mode-locked fiber laser generating femtosecond and picosecond pulses

Passively mode-locked fiber lasers cladding pumped by broad-area diode-laser arrays are described. With a dispersion-compenstated erbium-ytterbium fiber oscillator, 200-fs pulses with pulse energies up to 100 pJ are generated at a wavelength of 1560 nm. In a highly dispersive cavity, pulse widths of 3 ps with pulse energies up to 1 nJ are obtained. A saturable absorber is used for pulse startup, whereas nonlinear polarization evolution is exploited for steady-state pulse shaping. An environmentally stable design is ensured by use of a compensation scheme for linear polarization drifts in the cavity.

Environmentally stable high-power soliton fiber lasers that use chirped fiber Bragg gratings

Environmentally stable high-power erbium fiber soliton lasers are constructed by Kerr or carrier-type mode locking. We obtain high-energy pulses by using relatively short fiber lengths and providing large amounts of negative dispersion with chirped fiber Bragg gratings. The pulse energies and widths generated with both types of soliton laser are found to scale with the square root of the cavity dispersion. Kerr mode locking requires pulses with an approximately three times higher nonlinear phase shift in the cavity than carrier mode locking, which leads to the generation of slightly shorter pulses with as much as seven times higher pulse energies at the mode-locking threshold.
