Continuous-wave TEM00-mode 26.5-W-output virtual-point-source diode-array-pumped Nd:YAG laser

36-W diode-pumped continuous-wave 1319-nm Nd:YAG ceramic laser

Continuous-wave output at 1319 nm was obtained from a laser-diode-pumped 1% ceramic Nd:YAG laser. As much as 36.3-W output was obtained under pump power of 290 W, with an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 12.5%.

Passively Q-Switched Diode-Pumped Continuous-Wave Nd:YAG-Cr(4+):YAG Laser with High Peak Power and High Pulse Energy

A high peak power and high pulse energy passively Q-switched diode-pumped cw Nd:YAG laser at 1.064-mum wavelength has been demonstrated with Cr(4+):YAG crystal as the saturable absorber. The average output power of 7-12 W and pulse duration of 100-250 ns was obtained with kilohertz repetition rates. The highest peak power and pulse energy obtained were 30 kW and 3.4 mJ, respectively. All the output resulted from the TEM(00) mode with M(2) < 1.1. The thermal lensing effect of the saturable absorber was investigated, demonstrating that it played an important role in optimization of the output.

Control of the thermal lensing effect with different pump light distributions

We built a 32-laser-diode-formed virtual point source pumping system and achieved different pump light distributions from central intense to central uniform and central depressed. Continuous wave TEM(00) operations of a Nd:YAG laser were performed under these pump light distributions and their thermal lensing effects were estimated. Results show that the operation under central depressed pump light distribution has the lowest thermal lensing effect and can provide the highest output power, which agrees with the results derived from the theoretical calculation with the heat conduction equation.

Efficient diode side-pumping configuration of a Nd:YAG rod laser with a diffusive cavity

We propose an efficient, simple, and scalable diode side-pumping configuration of a solid-state rod laser. The rod is excited in a diffusive cavity and diode powers are transferred by a thin plate into the cavity. In multitransverse-mode cw operation, 40 W of laser power was generated with an optical-to-optical slope efficiency of 52.2% at a diode output power of 135.1 W and an electrical input power of 327.3 W into the diodes. These values correspond to an optical-to-optical total efficiency of 29.6% and an electrical-to-optical total efficiency of 12.2%. The electrical-to-optical slope efficiency was 30.3%.

Laser-diode-pumped Nd:YAG active-mirror laser

We describe a simple design, laser-diode-pumped cw Nd:YAG active-mirror laser and present a thermal analysis of the crystal. A cw output power of 2.4 W and an M(2) beam quality value of less than 1.9 at an incident pumping power of 8.9 W were obtained. From the thermal analysis we predict that the output power can be increased by increasing the pump beam diameter and the pump power at a constant excitation density.
