Non-iterative characterization of few-cycle laser pulses using flat-top gates

We demonstrate a method for broadband laser pulse characterization based on a spectrally resolved cross-correlation with a narrowband flat-top gate pulse. Excellent phase-matching by collinear excitation in a microscope focus is exploited by degenerate four-wave mixing in a microscope slide. Direct group delay extraction of an octave spanning spectrum which is generated in a highly nonlinear fiber allows for spectral phase retrieval. The validity of the technique is supported by the comparison with an independent second-harmonic fringe-resolved autocorrelation measurement for an 11 fs laser pulse.

Single-shot measurement of temporal phase shifts by frequency-domain holography

Frequency-domain holography is used to measure ultrafast phase shifts induced either by the nonlinear susceptibility ?(3) of fused silica or by ionization fronts in air over a temporal region of 1 ps with 70-fs resolution in a single shot. The use of an imaging spectrometer adds one-dimensional spatial resolution to the single-shot temporal measurements.

Spectral interference measurement of nonlinear pulse propagation dynamics in optical fibers

Ultrafast pulse shaping and ultrafast pulse spectral phase-retrieval techniques are used in the spectral interference measurement of nonlinear pulse propagation dynamics in dispersion-shifted optical fiber. Nonlinear responses in both amplitude profile and phase profile of the pulses at zero-dispersion wavelength as well as at nonzero-dispersion wavelength are directly measured. A numerical simulation that uses a third-oder-dispersion-included nonlinear Schrödinger equation gives excellent agreement with the experimental data.
