Multiwavelength picosecond frequency-shifted feedback laser with pulse control by a shaped-gain fiber amplifier

Generation of dual and quad-optical frequency combs in the injected radiation free mode-locked frequency-shifted feedback laser

The results of an optoelectronic system-frequency-shifted feedback (FSF) laser experimental examination are presented. The considered FSF laser is seeded only with optical amplifier spontaneous emission (ASE) and operates in the mode-locked regime, whereby the output radiation is sequence of short pulses with a repetition rate determined by the delay time in its optical feedback circuit. In the frequency domain, the spectrum of such a pulse sequence is an optical frequency comb (OFC). These OFCs we call initial. We consider the possibility of tunable acousto-optic (AO) dual and quad-comb frequency spacing downconversion in the FSF laser seeded with ASE and operating in the mode-locked regime. The examined system applies a single frequency shifting loop with single AO tunable filter as the frequency shifter that is fed with several radio frequency signals simultaneously. The initial OFCs with frequency spacing of about 6.5 MHz may be obtained in the wide spectral range and their width, envelope shape and position in the optical spectrum may be tuned. The dual-combs are obtained with a pair of initial OFCs aroused by two various ultrasound waves in the acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF). The dual-combs frequency spacing is determined by the frequency difference of the signals applied to the AOTF piezoelectric transducer and can be tuned simply. The quad-combs are obtained with three initial OFCs, forming a pair of dual-combs, appearing when three ultrasound frequencies feed the AOTF transducer. The quad-combs frequency spacing is defined by the difference between the frequency spacing of dual-combs. Quad-combs with more than 5000 spectral lines and tunable frequency spacing are observed. The successive frequency downconversion gives the possibility to reduce the OFC frequency spacing form several MHz for initial OFC to tens of kHz for quad-combs.

Diversified pulse generation from frequency shifted feedback Tm-doped fibre lasers

Pulsed fibre lasers operating in the eye-safe 2 μm spectral region have numerous potential applications in areas such as remote sensing, medicine, mid-infrared frequency conversion, and free-space communication. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate versatile 2 μm ps-ns pulses generation from Tm-based fibre lasers based on frequency shifted feedback and provide a comprehensive report of their special behaviors. The lasers are featured with elegant construction and the unparalleled capacity of generating versatile pulses. The self-starting mode-locking is initiated by an intra-cavity acousto-optical frequency shifter. Diversified mode-locked pulse dynamics were observed by altering the pump power, intra-cavity polarization state and cavity structure, including as short as 8 ps single pulse sequence, pulse bundle state and up to 12 nJ, 3 ns nanosecond rectangular pulse. A reflective nonlinear optical loop mirror was introduced to successfully shorten the pulses from 24 ps to 8 ps. Beside the mode-locking operation, flexible Q-switching and Q-switched mode-locking operation can also be readily achieved in the same cavity. Up to 78 μJ high energy nanosecond pulse can be generated in this regime. Several intriguing pulse dynamics are characterized and discussed.

Mode-locking and Q-switching in multi-wavelength fiber ring laser using low frequency phase modulation

We describe experimental investigation of pulsed output from a multi-wavelength fiber ring laser incorporating low frequency phase modulation with large modulation amplitude. The Erbium-doped fiber (EDF) ring laser generated more than 8 wavelength channels with the help of a phase modulator operating at 26.2 kHz and a periodic intra-cavity filter. For most cases, the laser output is pulsed in the form of mode-locking at 5.62 MHz and/or Q-switching at harmonic and sub-harmonic of the phase modulation frequency. Chaotic pulse output is also observed. The behavior of the output pulses are described as functions of pump power and phase modulation amplitude. The relative intensity noise (RIN) value of a single wavelength channel is measured to be under -100 dB/Hz (-140 dB/Hz beyond 1.5 GHz).
