Characterization of arbitrarily polarized ultrashort laser pulses by cross-phase modulation

Noise-related polarization dynamics for femto and picosecond pulses in normal dispersion fibers

We report how the complex intra-pulse polarization dynamics of coherent optical wavebreaking and incoherent Raman amplification processes in all-normal dispersion (ANDi) fibers vary for femto and picosecond pump pulses. Using high temporal resolution vector supercontinuum simulations, we identify deterministic polarization dynamics caused by wavebreaking and self-phase modulation for femtosecond pulses and quasi-chaotic polarization evolution driven by Raman amplification of quantum noise for picosecond pulses. In contrast to cross-phase modulation instability, the Raman-based polarization noise has no power threshold and is reduced by aligning the higher energy polarization component with the lower index axis of the fiber. The degree of polarization stability is quantified using new time domain parameters that build on the spectrally averaged degree of coherence used in supercontinuum research to quantify the output spectral stability. We show that the spectral coherence is intrinsically linked to polarization noise, and that the noise will occur in both polarization maintaining (PM) and non-PM fibers, spanning a broad range of pulse energies, durations, and fiber birefringence values. This analysis provides an in-depth understanding of the nonlinear polarization dynamics associated with coherent and incoherent propagation in ANDi fibers.

Theoretical analysis of the stretched optical pulse ripple and novel chirped pulse retrieving algorithm

Amplitude and phase ripples of an ultrafast chirped pulse complex envelope are considered. The formula that establishes the relation between the pulse complex envelope and its spectrum amplitude was theoretically derived for both cases of the ripple. Based on current results, a linearly chirped pulse can be retrieved using only a spectrum analyzer and Kerr nonlinear medium.

Pulse characterization by cross-phase modulation in chalcogenide glass

We report, to the best of our knowledge, the first all-fiber frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) device based on cross-phase modulation in chalcogenide glass. The amplitude and phase of pulses as short as 390 fs at femtojoule energy levels are accurately characterized without direction-of-time ambiguity in the retrieved pulse. A measurement sensitivity of 18  mW² is achieved from the strong nonlinearity of a 10 cm long chalcogenide microwire.

All-fiber frequency-resolved optical gating pulse characterization from chalcogenide glass

We report, to the best of our knowledge, the first all-fiber frequency-resolved optical gating device from nonlinear processing in chalcogenide glass. The strong four-wave mixing efficiency of an 11 cm long chalcogenide microwire enables a high sensitivity characterization of pulses in the 2 μm wavelength band. The amplitude and phase of chirped and unchirped picosecond pulses are accurately characterized with a high sensitivity of 0.16  mW².

Single-shot laser pulse reconstruction based on self-phase modulated spectra measurements

We report a method for ultrashort pulse reconstruction based only on the pulse spectrum and two self-phase modulated (SPM) spectra measured after pulse propagation through thin media with a Kerr nonlinearity. The advantage of this method is that it is a simple and very effective tool for characterization of complex signals. We have developed a new retrieval algorithm that was verified by reconstructing numerically generated fields, such as a complex electric field of double pulses and few-cycle pulses with noises, pedestals and dips down to zero spectral intensity, which is challenging for commonly used techniques. We have also demonstrated a single-shot implementation of the technique for the reconstruction of experimentally obtained pulses. This method can be used for high power laser systems operating in a single-shot mode in the optical, near- and mid-IR spectral ranges. The method is robust, low cost, stable to noise, does not require a priori information, and has no ambiguity related to time direction.

Single-Shot Measurement of Temporally-Dependent Polarization State of Femtosecond Pulses by Angle-Multiplexed Spectral-Spatial Interferometry

We demonstrate that temporally-dependent polarization states of ultrashort laser pulses can be reconstructed in a single shot by use of an angle-multiplexed spatial-spectral interferometry. This is achieved by introducing two orthogonally polarized reference pulses and interfering them with an arbitrarily polarized ultrafast pulse under measurement. A unique calibration procedure is developed for this technique which facilitates the subsequent polarization state measurements. The accuracy of several reconstructed polarization states is verified by comparison with that obtained from an analytic model that predicts the polarization state on the basis of its method of production. Laser pulses with mJ-level energies were characterized via this technique, including a time-dependent polarization state that can be used for polarization-gating of high-harmonic generation for production of attosecond pulses.

Milliwatt-peak-power pulse characterization at 1.55 microm by wavelength-conversion frequency-resolved optical gating

A novel wavelength-conversion configuration based on four-wave mixing in an optical fiber has been used to generate a frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) trace identical to that obtained from second-harmonic generation (SHG). The use of an optical fiber waveguide permits enhanced measurement sensitivity compared with that of conventional SHG-FROG and has been used for complete characterization of 1-mW peak-power picosecond pulses at 1.55 microm from an unamplified semiconductor laser diode gain switched at 10 GHz.
