Ultralow noise and supermode suppression in an actively mode-locked external-cavity semiconductor diode ring laser

Harmonic active mode-locking optoelectronic oscillator with suppressed supermode noise based on pulse intensity feedback

A harmonic active mode-locking optoelectronic oscillator (HAML-OEO) with pulse intensity feedback is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. It is capable of generating microwave pulses characterized by suppressed supermode noise, uniform intensity, and tunable repetition rates. Unlike traditional HAML-OEOs, active mode-locking and pulse intensity feedback are simultaneously achieved through the use of a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM). By synchronously feeding back the generated microwave pulses to the DDMZM, each pulse undergoes a loss proportional to its intensity, facilitating pulse intensity equalization and supermode noise suppression. In the experiment, intensity-equalized microwave pulse trains with repetition rates of 499 kHz and 998 kHz are generated by the 5th- and 10th-order HAML-OEOs, respectively, with the measured supermode noise suppression ratios exceeding 40 dB.

Transmission performance of a 1.96 µm active mode-locked laser in smoke channel

We demonstrate the data transmission characteristics of a 1.96 µm laser in an indoor simulated smoke channel. An active mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser at 1961.63 nm can be generated, and the repetition rate is 2.11 GHz corresponding pulse duration of 12.47 ps. Therefore, the pulse can be modulated by a 2.11 Gb/s digital sequence to act as a carrier light source. The transmission characteristics of signal light under different visibility conditions of 0.5, 0.05, and 0.005 km are studied. Compared with the back-to-back conditions, the signal-to-noise ratios of the carrier can decrease after passing through the smoke channels, which are 3.93, 7.1, and 9.08 dB, respectively. At the same time, the received power jitter can increase from ±0.16 to ±1.14dB. The sensitivity can be -19.52dBm at the visibility of 0.005 km. The experimental results show that thulium-doped mode-locked laser has an excellent performance in a smoke channel.

Demonstration of a highly stable 10 GHz optical frequency comb with low timing jitter from a SCOWA-based harmonically mode-locked nested cavity laser

An optical frequency comb with mode spacing of 10 GHz operating in the c-band is produced from a harmonically mode-locked laser using a slab-coupled optical waveguide amplifier device with a fiber-coupled external cavity. An intracavity Fabry-Perot etalon serves as a high finesse optical filter for supermode suppression and as the reference for cavity length stabilization using a multi-combline Pound-Drever-Hall setup. The Allan deviation of a single optical combline near 193.4 THz is measured via a heterodyne beat with a cavity stabilized cw laser and reaches a minimum fractional frequency deviation of 3×10^-13 at τ=30  ms. In addition, the phase noise of the photodetected pulsed output of the laser shows a timing jitter of <23  fs integrated from 1 Hz to the Nyquist frequency.

Remote transfer of ultrastable frequency references via fiber networks

Three distinct techniques exist for distributing an ultrastable frequency reference over optical fibers. For the distribution of a microwave frequency reference, an amplitude-modulated continuous wave (cw) laser can be used. Over kilometer-scale lengths this approach provides an instability at 1 s of approximately 3 x 10(-14) without stabilization of the fiber-induced noise and approximately 1 x 10(-14) with active noise cancellation. An optical frequency reference can be transferred by directly transmitting a stabilized cw laser over fiber and then disseminated to other optical and microwave regions using an optical frequency comb. This provides an instability at 1 s of 2 x 10(-14) without active noise cancellation and 3 x 10(-15) with active noise cancellation [Recent results reduce the instability at 1 s to 6 x 10(-18).] Finally, microwave and optical frequency references can be simultaneously transmitted using an optical frequency comb, and we expect the optical transfer to be similar in performance to the cw optical frequency transfer. The instability at 1 s for transfer of a microwave frequency reference with the comb is approximately 3 x 10(-14) without active noise cancellation and <7 x 10(-15) with active stabilization. The comb can also distribute a microwave frequency reference with root-mean-square timing jitter below 16 fs integrated over the Nyquist bandwidth of the pulse train (approximately 50 MHz) when high-bandwidth active noise cancellation is employed, which is important for remote synchronization applications.

Ultralow-jitter, 1550-nm mode-locked semiconductor laser synchronized to a visible optical frequency standard

Using high-bandwidth feedback, we have synchronized the pulse train from a mode-locked semiconductor laser to an external optical atomic clock signal and achieved what is to our knowledge the lowest timing jitter to date (22 fs, integrated from 1 Hz to 100 MHz) for such devices. The performance is limited by the intrinsic noise of the phase detector used for timing-jitter measurement. We expect such a highly stable device to play an important role in fiber-network-based precise time/frequency distribution.

Measurement of residual phase noise and longitudinal-mode linewidth in a hybridly mode-locked external linear cavity semiconductor laser

We report measurements of the residual phase-noise knee position and longitudinal-mode linewidth of a hybridly mode-locked external linear cavity semiconductor laser as a function of laser cavity length. Excellent agreement between these measurements suggests a direct relationship between rms pulse-to-pulse timing jitter and average longitudinal-mode linewidth. This relationship leads to a fundamental limit in the timing jitter of mode-locked lasers.
