Time-domain interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction by use of an acousto-optic programmable filter and a two-photon detector

Transient-grating single-shot supercontinuum spectral interferometry (TG-SSSI)

We present a technique for the single-shot measurement of the spatiotemporal (1D space+time) amplitude and phase of an ultrashort laser pulse. The method, transient grating single-shot supercontinuum spectral interferometry (TG-SSSI), is demonstrated by the space-time imaging of short pulses carrying spatiotemporal optical vortices. TG-SSSI is well suited for characterizing ultrashort laser pulses that contain singularities associated with spin/orbital angular momentum or polarization.

Few-cycle pulse characterization with an acousto-optic pulse shaper

An acousto-optic pulse shaper has been used to characterize few-cycle pulses generated in a hollow-core fiber. A grism pair precompensates for the dispersion of the acousto-optic crystal, allowing the full pulse-shaping window to be used for replica generation rather than self-compensation. A 9.4 fs pulse was measured, the shortest ever measured with an acousto-optic pulse shaper, to our knowledge.

Application of single-beam homodyne SPIDER for the control of complex spectral phase profiles

We investigate the range of application of single-beam homodyne spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SPIDER) for multiphoton microscopy. Simulations and experimental studies performed on model spectral phase profiles show that the phase reconstruction technique used in this method makes the phase retrieval quality highly sensitive to the complexity of the profile. In addition, we show that the use of iterative processes is likely to deteriorate the phase retrieval quality, especially for strongly varying phase profiles. These effects are illustrated and quantified for sinusoidal and quadratic spectral phase profiles.

Shaper-assisted full-phase characterization of UV pulses without a spectrometer

A full-phase measurement of low-energy femtosecond UV pulses is presented. The method relies on phase retrieval of measured sonogram traces and is greatly simplified by a two-dimensional shaper-assisted cross correlation setup. As all required pulses are generated by the pulse shaper, the method is free of external references and additional tunable filter setups.

Ultrashort pulse characterization by spectral shearing interferometry with spatially chirped ancillae

We report a new version of spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SPIDER), in which two spatially chirped ancilla fields are used to generate a spatially encoded SPIDER interferogram. We dub this new technique Spatially Encoded Arrangement for Chirped ARrangement for SPIDER (SEA-CAR-SPIDER). The single shot interferogram contains multiple shears, the spectral amplitude of the test pulse, and the reference phase, which is accurate for broadband pulses. The technique enables consistency checking through the simultaneous acquisition of multiple shears and offers a simple and precise calibration method. All calibration parameters--the shears, and the upconversionfrequency--can be accurately obtained from a single calibration trace.

Monitoring the He+ ion channel formation by high-order harmonic generation

The macroscopic build-up of the high-order harmonic signal depends on the free electron density in the generation medium. The free electrons affect the harmonic yield and spectral shape through modifying the refractive index and the phase matching conditions. These dependences allow studying the He(+) ion channel formation in a He gas jet. The evolution of an ion channel created by an ultrashort laser pulse via optical field ionization was monitored using the harmonic signal generated by a collinear propagating second laser pulse. From the measured high harmonic signal as function of the delay we are able to gain information about the free electron density. Under our experimental condition, the ion channel has been fully formed 300 fs after the first laser pulse, resulting in an enhancement of harmonic yield of the second laser pulse by two orders of magnitude.

Single-beam homodyne SPIDER for multiphoton microscopy

We report a new version of spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SPIDER) requiring only a single phase-shaped laser beam. A narrowband probe pulse is selected out of a broadband ultrafast laser pulse by a phase pulse-shaping technique and mixed with the original broadband pulse to generate a second-harmonic generation (SHG) signal. Using another SHG signal solely generated by the broadband pulse as a local oscillator, the spectral phase of the broadband laser pulse can be analytically retrieved by a combination of double-quadrature spectral interferometry and homodyne optical technique for SPIDER (HOT SPIDER). An arbitrary spectral phase at the sample position of a microscope can be compensated with a precision of 0.05 rad over the FWHM of the laser spectrum. It is readily applicable to a nonlinear microscopy technique with a phase-controlled broadband laser pulse.

In situ broadband pulse compression for multiphoton microscopy using a shaper-assisted collinear SPIDER

The characterization and control of the phase of broadband femtosecond pulses in nonlinear microscopy are successfully demonstrated with a collinear configuration of spectral shear interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SPIDER). A femtosecond-pulse shaper is used as a dispersionless interferometer for the measurement of the spectral phase and to actively compress a broadband supercontinuum from a photonic crystal fiber. This allows in situ online phase management and enables the application of quantum control spectroscopy in microenvironments.

Multiphoton intrapulse interference. IV. Ultrashort laser pulse spectral phase characterization and compensation

We introduce a noninterferometric single beam method to characterize and compensate the spectral phase of ultrashort femtosecond pulses accurately. The method uses a pulse shaper that scans calibrated phase functions to determine the unknown spectral phase of a pulse. The pulse shaper can then be used to synthesize arbitrary phase femtosecond pulses or it can introduce a compensating spectral phase to obtain transform-limited pulses. This method is ideally suited for the generation of tailored spectral phase functions required for coherent control experiments.

Time-domain interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction of mid-infrared femtosecond pulses

Mid-infrared ultrashort pulses of 9.2-microm center wavelength are characterized in both amplitude and phase. This is achieved by use of a variant of spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction in which spectral interferometry has been replaced with time-domain interferometry, a technique that is well suited for infrared pulses. The setup permits simultaneous recording of the second-order interferometric autocorrelation, thus providing an independent check on the retrieved spectral phase.
