Optical phase locking among femtosecond subharmonic pulses

Multi-color carrier-envelope-phase stabilization for high-repetition-rate multi-pulse coherent synthesis

Using a zero-offset carrier-envelope locking technique, we have synthesized an octave-spanning composite frequency comb exhibiting 132-attosecond timing jitter between the constituent pulses over a one-second observation window. In the frequency domain, this composite comb has a modal structure and coherence which are indistinguishable from those of a comb that might be produced by a hypothetical single mode locked oscillator of equivalent bandwidth. The associated phase stability enables the participating multi-color pulse sequences to be coherently combined, representing an example of multi-pulse synthesis using a femtosecond oscillator.

Efficient femtosecond optical parametric oscillator with dual-wavelength operation

We demonstrated on a synchronously pumped femtosecond optical parametric oscillator with dual-signal-wavelength operation. Our results showed that the dual-wavelength oscillation is not determined by the net-zero dispersion but rather by the balance of phase matching and group-velocity mismatching caused by the nonlinear crystal between the two signals. With a MgO-doped periodically poled lithium niobate as the nonlinear crystal, total signal power up to 530 mW was obtained by using a 2.6 W femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser at the central wavelength of 808 nm as the pump source, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 20.4%. By slightly adjusting the cavity length, the signal wavelength can be broadly tuned from 1001 to 1438 nm and the dual-wavelength tuning range is from 1001 to 1204 nm.

Coherent ultrafast pulse synthesis between an optical parametric oscillator and a laser

We have demonstrated coherent pulse synthesis between the carrier-envelope, phase-locked, second-harmonic pulses from a synchronously pumped femtosecond optical parametric oscillator and those from its self-mode-locked Ti:sapphire pump laser. By using a single nonlinear crystal for parametric and second-harmonic generation, we maximized the common-mode rejection of environmental noise, obtaining a temporal overlap between the pulses with a precision of 30 as (1% of the optical period) in an observation time of 20 ms. Mutual coherence between the two parent pulses was verified optically by spectral interferometry, and synthesis was tested by measuring the autocorrelation of the combined pulses, with and without carrier-envelope phase locking.

Self-phase-locked degenerate femtosecond optical parametric oscillator

We demonstrated a stable degenerate synchronously pumped femtosecond optical parametric oscillator (SPOPO) as a divide-by-2 subharmonic generator. The SPOPO exhibited passive all-optical self-phase-locking between the pump and signal/idler and thus required no external electronic feedback to produce the phase-locked subharmonic. We employed a type I phase-matched, 1-mm-long, periodically poled MgO:LiNbO3 crystal as the nonlinear gain element and an 80 MHz mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser with 180 fs pulses tuned at 775 nm as the pump. The SPOPO generated transform-limited 70 fs phase-locked output pulses centered at 1550 nm. The self-phase-locking operation was confirmed by separate beat-note measurement techniques with respect to the pump laser and with respect to an external cw laser.

Composite frequency comb spanning 0.4-2.4 microm from a phase-controlled femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser and synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator

A repetition-rate-stabilized frequency comb ranging from the violet to the mid-infrared (0.4-2.4 microm) is obtained by phase locking a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser and a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator to a common supercontinuum reference. The locking results have bandwidths lower than 3 kHz. By changing the locking frequencies, different relative and absolute offsets of the constituent frequency combs are achievable.

Coherent synthesis using carrier-envelope phase-controlled pulses from a dual-color femtosecond optical parametric oscillator

By using a dual-color femtosecond optical parametric oscillator (OPO), a coherent waveform was synthesized from two coresonant near-infrared signal pulses whose center wavelengths had a separation of 100 nm. Immediately after the OPO cavity the pulses had independent carrier-envelope phase-slip frequencies, and synthesis was achieved by shifting these frequencies using an acousto-optic modulator driven by an internally generated difference frequency. Soliton self-frequency shifted pulses from a photonic crystal fiber and a cross-correlation frequency-resolved optical gating (XFROG) measurement were used to analyze the result of the synthesis experiment and revealed that the synthesized waveform was a train of high-contrast 30 fs pulses.

Dual-color operation of a femtosecond optical parametric oscillator exhibiting stable relative carrier-envelope phase-slip frequencies

A femtosecond optical parametric oscillator is demonstrated that can operate in a regime where two signal pulses with well-separated center wavelengths are simultaneously resonant. Measurements show that the oscillator output contains a stable modulation at a frequency corresponding to the difference in the carrier-envelope phase-slip frequencies of the co-resonant pulses. The physical origin of this internal beat signal is attributed to second-order mixing effects, and its frequency is shown to be consistent with theory.

100-attosecond timing jitter between two-color mode-locked lasers by active-passive hybrid synchronization

We have demonstrated a reduction of the timing jitter between passively synchronized Ti:sapphire and Cr:forsterite mode-locked lasers into a 100-attosecond (as) regime by suppressing slow fluctuations with the use of active slow-bandwidth extracavity feedback. This active-passive hybrid synchronization scheme permits the achievement of timing jitters of 98 +/- 18 as at a bandwidth of 100 kHz and of 126 +/- 20 as at a bandwidth of 1 MHz for as long as 100 s.
