Generation of a squeezed vacuum resonant on a rubidium D1 line with periodically poled KTiOPO4

Toward integrated tantalum pentoxide optical parametric oscillators

We present a hybrid waveguide-fiber optical parametric oscillator (OPO) exploiting degenerate four-wave mixing in tantalum pentoxide. The OPO, pumped with ultrashort pulses at 1.55  µm wavelength, generated tunable idler pulses with up to 4.1 pJ energy tunable center wavelength between 1.63  µm and 1.68 µm. An upper bound for the total tolerable cavity loss of 32 dB was found, rendering a chip-integrated OPO feasible as a compact and robust light source.

Improved waveguide-based ultraviolet light generation and pulsed squeezing at 795 nm

We report on the waveguide-based generation of pulsed squeezed light at 795 nm, suitable for quantum enhanced measurements with rubidium atoms. Pulsed ultraviolet second harmonic light with a power of more than 400 mW is produced using a periodically poled LiNbO₃ (PPLN) waveguide and is injected into another PPLN waveguide to generate quadrature squeezing. We find that the phase of the second harmonic pulse is shifted within a pulse, and we attribute the shift to heating due to blue-light induced infrared absorption (BLIIRA) from a comparison between the experiment and a numerical simulation. A squeezing level of -1.5(1) dB is observed in homodyne detection when we apply a linear phase shift to the local oscillator. The experiment and simulation imply that the squeezing level can be further improved by reducing BLIIRA.

Toward integrated synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillators in silicon nitride

We present a tunable, hybrid waveguide-fiber optical parametric oscillator (OPO) synchronously pumped by an ultra-fast fiber laser exploiting four-wave mixing (FWM) generated in silicon nitride waveguides. Parametric oscillation results in a 35 dB enhancement of the idler spectral power density in comparison to spontaneous FWM, with the ability of wide wavelength tuning over 86 nm in the O-band. Measurements of the oscillation threshold and the efficiency of the feedback loop reveal how an integration of the OPO on a single silicon nitride chip can be accomplished at standard repetition rates of pump lasers in the order of 100 MHz.

Squeezed Lasing

We introduce the concept of a squeezed laser, in which a squeezed cavity mode develops a macroscopic photonic occupation due to stimulated emission. Above the lasing threshold, the emitted light retains both the spectral purity of a laser and the photon correlations characteristic of quadrature squeezing. Our proposal, implementable in optical setups, relies on a combination of the parametric driving of the cavity and the excitation by a broadband squeezed vacuum to achieve lasing behavior in a squeezed cavity mode. The squeezed laser can find applications that go beyond those of standard lasers thanks to the squeezed character, such as the direct application in Michelson interferometry beyond the standard quantum limit, or its use in atomic metrology.

Quantum Interferometer Combining Squeezing and Parametric Amplification

High precision interferometers are the building blocks of precision metrology and the ultimate interferometric sensitivity is limited by the quantum noise. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a compact quantum interferometer involving two optical parametric amplifiers and the squeezed states generated within the interferometer are directly used for the phase-sensing quantum state. By both squeezing shot noise and amplifying phase-sensing intensity the sensitivity improvement of 4.86±0.24  dB beyond the standard quantum limit is deterministically realized and a minimum detectable phase smaller than that of all present interferometers under the same phase-sensing intensity is achieved. This interferometric system has significantly potential applications in a variety of measurements for tiny variances of physical quantities.

Laser Intensity Noise Suppression for Preparing Audio-Frequency Squeezed Vacuum State of Light

Laser intensity noise suppression has essential effects on preparation and characterization of the audio-frequency squeezed vacuum state of light based on a sub-threshold optical parametric oscillator (OPO). We have implemented two feedback loops by using relevant acousto-optical modulators (AOM) to stabilize the intensity of 795-nm near infrared (NIR) fundamental laser and 397.5-nm ultraviolet (UV) laser generated by cavity-enhanced frequency doubling. Typical peak-to-peak laser intensity fluctuation with a bandwidth of ~10 kHz in a half hour has been improved from ±7.45% to ±0.06% for 795-nm NIR laser beam, and from ±9.04% to ±0.05% for 397.5-nm UV laser beam, respectively. The squeezing level of the squeezed vacuum state at 795 nm prepared by the sub-threshold OPO with a PPKTP crystal has been improved from −3.3 to −4.0 dB around 3~9 kHz of analysis frequency range.

Single-frequency tunable 447.3 nm laser by frequency doubling of tapered amplified diode laser at cesium D1 line

A continuous single-frequency tunable blue laser at 447.3 nm is developed by external-cavity frequency doubling of a tapered amplifier-boosted continuous-wave diode laser at cesium (Cs) D1 line. A maximum blue power of 178 mW with 50.8% conversion efficiency is obtained. It can be continuously tuned over a range around 1.6 GHz as the diode laser frequency is scanned across the F=4→F^'=3 transition of ¹³³Cs D1 line. The generated tunable and stable blue laser source has potential applications in constructing quantum light-atom interfaces in quantum networks.

Reduction of zero baseline drift of the Pound-Drever-Hall error signal with a wedged electro-optical crystal for squeezed state generation

We report an electro-optic modulator (EOM) with a wedged MgO: LiNbO₃ as the modulation crystal to reduce the zero baseline drift (ZBD) of the Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) error signal. When the input linear polarization is not along the modulation direction, the wedged design can separate the two orthogonal polarizations in space after the EOM and eliminate the interference between the carrier and the two orthogonal sidebands. Therefore, the residual amplitude modulation (RAM) of phase modulation process caused by the input polarization misalignment and the etalon effect can be significantly reduced. The noise power spectrum of phase-modulated light with wedged crystal EOM is suppressed from -24 to -69  dBm, which is much lower than that with conventional EOM. The peak-to-peak value of the ZBD of the PDH error signal is reduced effectively to +70/-50  ppm during the 10 h, which meets the requirements for stable squeezed light generation.

Improvement of vacuum squeezing resonant on the rubidium D1 line at 795 nm

We report on efficient generation of second harmonic laser and single-mode vacuum squeezed light of 795 nm with periodically poled KTiOPO4 (PPKTP) crystals. We achieved 111 mW of ultra-violet (UV) light at 397.5 nm from 191 mW of fundamental light with a PPKTP crystal in a doubling cavity, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 58.1%. Using the UV light to pump an optical parametric oscillator with a PPKTP crystal, we realized -5.6 dB of a maximum squeezing. We analyzed the pump power dependence of the squeezing level and concluded that the UV light induced losses limit the improvement of the squeezing level. The generated squeezed light has huge potential application in quantum memory and ultra-precise measurement.

Comparative study of the frequency-doubling performance on ring and linear cavity at short wavelength region

We theoretically and experimentally perform a comparative study on performance of the linear standing-wave cavity and ring cavity for external cavity frequency doubling at the wavelength from 795 nm to 397.5 nm. The two cavities show obvious differences of the thermal effect of nonlinear crystal, cavity sensitivity, and maximum output power. The results show that ring cavity as the external enhancement cavity is a better choice than standing-wave cavity at short wavelength region. At last, a 397.5 nm violet laser with 408 mW corresponding to an input power of 992 mW is obtained by using the ring cavity, considering the original mode-matching efficiency of 98% between the 795 nm laser and frequency doubling cavity, the conversion efficiency is 41.9%.

Injection locking of a high power ultraviolet laser diode for laser cooling of ytterbium atoms

We developed a high-power laser system at a wavelength of 399 nm for laser cooling of ytterbium atoms with ultraviolet laser diodes. The system is composed of an external cavity laser diode providing frequency stabilized output at a power of 40 mW and another laser diode for amplifying the laser power up to 220 mW by injection locking. The systematic method for optimization of our injection locking can also be applied to high power light sources at any other wavelengths. Our system does not depend on complex nonlinear frequency-doubling and can be made compact, which will be useful for providing light sources for laser cooling experiments including transportable optical lattice clocks.

Shot-noise-limited magnetometer with sub-picotesla sensitivity at room temperature

We report a photon shot-noise-limited (SNL) optical magnetometer based on amplitude modulated optical rotation using a room-temperature (85)Rb vapor in a cell with anti-relaxation coating. The instrument achieves a room-temperature sensitivity of 70 fT / √Hz at 7.6 μT. Experimental scaling of noise with optical power, in agreement with theoretical predictions, confirms the SNL behaviour from 5 μT to 75 μT. The combination of best-in-class sensitivity and SNL operation makes the system a promising candidate for application of squeezed light to a state-of-the-art atomic sensor.

Vacuum squeezed light for atomic memories at the D2 cesium line

We report the experimental generation of squeezed light at 852 nm, locked on the Cesium D(2) line. 50% of noise reduction down to 50 kHz has been obtained with a doubly resonant optical parametric oscillator operating below threshold, using a periodically-poled KTP crystal. This light is directly utilizable with Cesium atomic ensembles for quantum networking applications.

Delay of squeezing and entanglement using electromagnetically induced transparency in a vapour cell

We demonstrate experimentally the delay of squeezed light and entanglement using Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) in a rubidium vapour cell. We perform quadrature amplitude measurements of the probe field and find no appreciable excess noise from the EIT process. From input squeezing of 3.2+/-0.5 dB at low sideband frequencies, we observed the survival of 2.0+/-0.5 dB of squeezing at the EIT output. By splitting the squeezed light on a beam-splitter, we generated biased entanglement between two beams. We transmit one of the entangled beams through the EIT cell and correlate the quantum statistics of this beam with its entangled counterpart. We experimentally observed a 2.2+/-0.5 micros delay of the biased entanglement and obtained a preserved degree of wavefunction inseparability of 0.71+/-0.01, below the unity value for separable states.

Storage and retrieval of a squeezed vacuum

Storage and retrieval of a squeezed vacuum was successfully demonstrated using electromagnetically induced transparency. The squeezed vacuum pulse having a temporal width of 930 ns was incident on the laser cooled 87Rb atoms with an intense control light in a coherent state. When the squeezed vacuum pulse was slowed and spatially compressed in the cold atoms, the control light was switched off. After 3 mus of storage, the control light was switched on again, and the squeezed vacuum was retrieved, as was confirmed using the time-domain homodyne method.

Quantum memory for squeezed light

We produce a 600-ns pulse of 1.86-dB squeezed vacuum at 795 nm in an optical parametric amplifier and store it in a rubidium vapor cell for 1 mus using electromagnetically induced transparency. The recovered pulse, analyzed using time-domain homodyne tomography, exhibits up to 0.21+/-0.04 dB of squeezing. We identify the factors leading to the degradation of squeezing and investigate the phase evolution of the atomic coherence during the storage interval.

Ultraslow propagation of squeezed vacuum pulses with electromagnetically induced transparency

We have succeeded in observing ultraslow propagation of squeezed vacuum pulses with electromagnetically induced transparency. Squeezed vacuum pulses (probe lights) were incident on a laser-cooled 87Rb gas together with an intense coherent light (control light). A homodyne method sensitive to the vacuum state was employed for detecting the probe pulse passing through the gas. A delay of 3.1 micros was observed for the probe pulse having a temporal width of 10 micros.

Generating quadrature squeezing in an atom laser through self-interaction

We describe a scheme for creating quadrature- and intensity-squeezed atom lasers that do not require squeezed light as an input. The beam becomes squeezed due to nonlinear interactions between the atoms in the beam in an analogue to optical Kerr squeezing. We develop an analytic model of the process which we compare to a detailed stochastic simulation of the system using phase space methods. Finally we show that significant squeezing can be obtained in an experimentally realistic system and suggest ways of increasing the tunability of the squeezing.
