Review of Open Cavity Random Lasers as Laser-Based Sensors

In this review, the concept of open cavity lasing for ultrasensitive sensing is explored, specifically in driving important innovations as laser-based biosensors─a field mostly dominated by fluorescence-based sensing. Laser-based sensing exhibits higher signal amplification and lower signal-to-noise ratio due to narrow emission lines as well as high sensitivity due to nonlinear components. The versatility of open cavity random lasers for probing analytes directly which is ultrasensitive to small changes in chemical composition and temperature fluctuations paves the path of utilizing narrow emission lines for advanced sensing. The concept of random lasing is first explained followed by a comparison of the different lasing threshold that has been reported. This is followed by a survey of reports on laser-based sensing and more specifically as biosensors. Finally, a perspective on the way forward for open cavity laser-based sensing is put forth.

Waveguide random laser based on a disordered ZnSe-nanosheets arrangement

A waveguide scheme is constructed by coating the matrix of randomly distributed ZnSe nanosheet structures with a layer of dye-doped polymer, which provides strong feedback or gain channels for the emission from the dye molecules and enables successful running of a random laser with FWHM of ~0.65 nm. The strong scattering by the nanostructures and the strong confinement provided by the active waveguide layer are the key essentials for the narrow-band and low-threshold operation of this random laser. The random laser scheme reveals an obvious two-threshold behavior, which is corresponding to the thresholds of TM and TE modes. The feedback mechanisms for laser action are investigated by power Fourier transforming of the spectra. This kind of active waveguide not only provides high quality confinement of the radiation for efficient amplification, but also enables possible directional output of this kind of random laser.

Discrete-mode ZnO microparticle random laser

A random laser incorporating irregular-shaped ZnO microparticles exhibits a small number of lasing lines with stable lasing intensities and negligibly low background emission. This unique feature is in direct contrast to that observed for a conventional ZnO nanoparticle film random laser. Gain competition between the discrete laser modes also occurs in this microparticle random laser. These lasing characteristics are because of the intra-particle confinement of the laser cavity modes in each ZnO microparticle.

Random lasing from granular surface of waveguide with blends of PS and PMMA

Lasing from a planar waveguide with the blend of Polystyrene(PS): Poly-methylmethacrylate(PMMA) doped with tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato)aluminum(Alq(3)) and 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-tert-butyl-6(1,1,7,7-tetramethyljulolidyl-9-enyl)-4H-pyran(DCJTB) was investigated. Due to phase separation of the blend of PS:PMMA during the solvent evaporation process, a waveguide with granular surface was obtained, which has 2D island-like nanostructures with diameters ranging between 200 and 400 nm and heights at about 25 nm. Pumped by a YAG laser with wavelength of 355 nm, a significant random lasing was observed. Compared to the amplified spontaneous radiation (ASE) of planar waveguides with only PMMA or PS doped with Alq3:DCJTB prepared under the same conditions, the lasing threshold of the former is decreased by about 5 times, and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) is reduced to 1.7 nm from 12~15 nm. Our experiments show a promising method to achieve lower threshold for organic lasers.

Gold-nanoparticle-assisted random lasing from powdered GaN

We demonstrate Au-nanoparticle-assisted random lasing from a powdered GaN sample. In the presence of Au nanoparticles on GaN powder surfaces, several lasing lines are observed in photoexcited luminescence spectra near the center of the GaN band-edge emission peak. The random lasing is considered to arise from a decrease in the lasing threshold due to the suppression of crystal defect loss by surface plasmon excitation on Au. From spatially resolved lasing emission spectra and their FT analysis results, the formation of random lasing cavities at different spatial positions is confirmed. The size of the random lasing spot is determined to be larger than that of the scattered light speckle of the pumping source on a thin powdered GaN sample.
