Unprecedented Raman cascading and four-wave mixing from second-harmonic generation in optical fiber

Efficient second-harmonic generation through cascaded optically poled fibers

We report the experimental demonstration of efficient second-harmonic generation by splicing optically poled fiber segments. A device made from five segments each 20 cm-long exhibits, at a fundamental average power of 4.2 mW, a maximum increase of 5.5 in the conversion efficiency with respect to a single 20 cm poled fiber, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 5.4%. For any considered fundamental power, the conversion efficiency at the output of a five-segment device is larger than the efficiency of a single poled fiber having the same length.

Second harmonic generation in multimode graded-index fibers: spatial beam cleaning and multiple harmonic sideband generation

We study experimentally and numerically the spectral and spatial dynamics of second harmonic generation in an all-optically poled multimode graded-index fiber. In contrast with poled single-mode fibers, in a multimode graded-index fiber a pump can generate a series of sharp sidebands around its second harmonic (SH) that originate from the sub-millimetric periodic evolution of the intensity at the fundamental frequency. The mutual interaction between the fundamental and its SH may also strongly affect the spatial distribution of guided light for both colors: when increasing the pump power, both fundamental and SH output beams evolve from disordered multimode speckles into two bell-shaped beams.

Observation of sum-frequency-generation-induced cascaded four-wave mixing using two crossing femtosecond laser pulses in a 0.1 mm beta-barium-borate crystal

We demonstrate the simultaneous generation of multicolor femtosecond laser pulses spanning the wavelength range from UV to near IR in a 0.1 mm Type I beta-barium borate crystal from 800 nm fundamental and weak IR super-continuum white light (SCWL) pulses. The multicolor broadband laser pulses observed are attributed to two concomitant cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) processes as corroborated by calculation: (1) directly from the two incident laser pulses; (2) by the sum-frequency generation (SFG) induced CFWM process (SFGFWM). The latter signal arises from the interaction between the frequency-doubled fundamental pulse (400 nm) and the SFG pulse generated in between the fundamental and IR-SCWL pulses. The versatility and simplicity of this spatially dispersed multicolor self-compressed laser pulse generation offer compact and attractive methods to conduct femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy and time-resolved multicolor spectroscopy.
