Unique Features of Nonlocally Nonlinear Systems with Oscillatory Responses

We review the recent investigation of a new form of nonlocally nonlinear system with oscillatory responses. The system has various new features, such as the nonlocality-controllable transition of self-focusing and self-defocusing nonlinearities, a unique modulational instability and new forms of solitons. We also discuss the propagation of the optical beam in a nematic liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy and demonstrate theoretically that propagation can be modelled by the system.

Vector solitons in nonlocal optical media with pseudo spin-orbit-coupling

We numerically investigate the existence and stability of nonlocal vector solitons with pseudo spin-orbit-coupling (SOC). The pseudo SOC is realized by a framework based on the spatial-domain copropagation of two beams with mutually orthogonal polarizations and opposite transverse components of the carrier wave vectors in nonlocal optical media. The numerical results show that there are two kinds of solutions for vector solitons, one is central symmetric, and the other is noncentral symmetric. The solitons may exist below a certain threshold value of the effective SOC strength in the system.

Balancing long-range interactions and quantum pressure: Solitons in the Hamiltonian mean-field model

The Hamiltonian mean-field (HMF) model describes particles on a ring interacting via a cosine interaction, or equivalently, rotors coupled by infinite-range XY interactions. Conceived as a generic statistical mechanical model for long-range interactions such as gravity (of which the cosine is the first Fourier component), it has recently been used to account for self-organization in experiments on cold atoms with long-range optically mediated interactions. The significance of the HMF model lies in its ability to capture the universal effects of long-range interactions and yet be exactly solvable in the canonical ensemble. In this work we consider the quantum version of the HMF model in one dimension and provide a classification of all possible stationary solutions of its generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GGPE), which is both nonlinear and nonlocal. The exact solutions are Mathieu functions that obey a nonlinear relation between the wave function and the depth of the mean-field potential, and we identify them as bright solitons. Using a Galilean transformation these solutions can be boosted to finite velocity and are increasingly localized as the mean-field potential becomes deeper. In contrast to the usual local GPE, the HMF case features a tower of solitons, each with a different number of nodes. Our results suggest that long-range interactions support solitary waves in a novel manner relative to the short-range case.

Incoherently coupled two-color vector dark solitons in self-defocusing media

We investigate the stability of incoherently coupled two-color vector dark and grey solitons in a nonlinear self-defocusing media. We employ the variational technique to derive approximate solutions of the two-color vector dark solitons. The relations between the soliton parameters and the representation of the transverse velocities of the vector solitons are analytically obtained. We also demonstrate numerically the propagation dynamics of the two-color vector solitons, which shows that the two-color vector dark and grey solitons with different wavelengths are always unstable.

Influence of spatial delay on the modulational instability in a composite system with a controllable nonlinearity

A theoretical investigation of the modulational instability (MI) in a composite system with a nonlocal response function is presented. A composite system of silver nanoparticles in acetone is chosen, whose nonlinearity can be delicately varied by controlling the volume fraction of the constituents, thus enabling the possibility of nonlinearity management. A pump-probe counterpropagation configuration has been assumed, and the interplay between the competing nonlinearities and the nonlocalities in the MI dynamics is systematically explored. A different class of nonlocalities have been considered, and the study reveals that the nonlocality critically depends on the kind of nonlocal function. However, the general behavior is that the strength of nonlocality suppresses the MI gain, while for a rectangular function it assists the emergence of new spectral windows. We also show that the cross coupling effects are significant in enhancing MI, especially in the defocusing nonlinearity. We also emphasize the impact of the relative strength of the nonlinearities in the MI dynamics at different settings of competing nonlinearities. Thus, we emphasize the importance of the different class of nonlocal response in the MI dynamics and explore the interplay between the higher order nonlinear effects and nonlocalities in the counterpropagating configurations.

Ring dark and antidark solitons in nonlocal media

Ring dark and antidark solitons in nonlocal media are found. These structures have, respectively, the form of annular dips or humps on top of a stable CW background, and exist in a weak or strong nonlocality regime, defined by the sign of a characteristic parameter. It is demonstrated analytically that these solitons satisfy an effective cylindrical Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (aka Johnson's) equation and, as such, can be written explicitly in closed form. Numerical simulations show that they propagate undistorted and undergo quasi-elastic collisions, attesting to their stability properties.

Nonlocal dark solitons under competing cubic-quintic nonlinearities

We investigate properties of dark solitons under competing nonlocal cubic-local quintic nonlinearities. Analytical results, based on a variational approach and confirmed by direct numerical simulations, reveal the existence of a unique dark soliton solutions with their width being independent of the degree of nonlocality, due to the competing cubic-quintic nonlinearities.
