Long-term stable continuous variable entanglement generation in type-II non-degenerate optical parametric amplifier

Long-term stable entanglement is a crucial aspect in the implementation of reliable quantum information processes. However, long-term continuous variable entanglement generation, especially in type-II non-degenerate optical parametric amplifier, has yet to be reported on. Here, we derive the relationship between entanglement and temperature fluctuations in the crystal of a type-II non-degenerate optical parametric amplifier, and propose a novel method for long-term stable entanglement generation by locking the temperature of the crystal. In the experiment, we obtain a 5.4 dB entanglement lasting two hours. The method holds promise in the generation of a truly usable above 10 dB entanglement and brings us closer to continuous-variable quantum information processing.

Sub-parts-per-trillion level sensitivity in trace gas detection by cantilever-enhanced photo-acoustic spectroscopy

An exceptional property of photo-acoustic spectroscopy is the zero-background in wavelength modulation configuration while the signal varies linearly as a function of absorbed laser power. Here, we make use of this property by combining a highly sensitive cantilever-enhanced photo-acoustic detector, a particularly stable high-power narrow-linewidth mid-infrared continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator, and a strong absorption cross-section of hydrogen fluoride to demonstrate the ability of cantilever-enhanced photo-acoustic spectroscopy to reach sub-parts-per-trillion level sensitivity in trace gas detection. The high stability of the experimental setup allows long averaging times. A noise equivalent concentration of 650 parts-per-quadrillion is reached in 32 minutes.

Wide and fast dispersion tuning of a picosecond OPO based on aperiodic quasi-phase matching using an axially chirped volume Bragg grating

We report on a widely tunable synchronously pumped picosecond optical parametric oscillator (OPO) combining an aperiodically poled MgO-doped LiNbO₃ crystal as a broadband gain medium and an axially chirped volume Bragg grating as a spectral filtering dispersive element. Translation of the Bragg grating along the beam axis enables wavelength tuning over 215 nm around 3.82 μm and provides spectral narrowing. Rapid continuous tuning over 150 nm in 100 ms is demonstrated.

High-power, single-frequency, continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator employing a variable reflectivity volume Bragg grating

A continuous-wave singly-resonant optical parametric oscillator (SRO) with an optimum extraction efficiency, that can be adjusted independent of the pump power, is demonstrated. The scheme employs a variable-reflectivity volume Bragg grating (VBG) as the output coupler of a ring cavity, omitting any additional intra-cavity elements. In this configuration, we obtained a 75%-efficient SRO with a combined signal (19 W @ 1.55 µm) and idler (11 W @ 3.4 µm) output power of 30 W.

High-power mid-infrared frequency comb from a continuous-wave-pumped bulk optical parametric oscillator

We demonstrate that it is possible to obtain a mid-infrared optical frequency comb (OFC) experimentally by using a continuous-wave-pumped optical parametric oscillator (OPO). The comb is generated without any active modulation. It is based on cascading quadratic nonlinearities that arise from intra-cavity phase mismatched second harmonic generation of the signal wave that resonates in the OPO. The generated OFC is transferred from the signal wavelength (near-infrared) to the idler wavelength (mid-infrared) by intracavity difference frequency generation between the OPO pump wave and the signal comb. We have produced a mid-infrared frequency comb which is tunable from 3.0 to 3.4 µm with an average output power of up to 3.1 W.

Tuning and stability of a singly resonant continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator close to degeneracy

Wavelength tuning and stability characteristics of a singly resonant continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator (cw OPO) in the proximity of signal-idler degeneracy have been studied. The OPO is made singly resonant by using a Bragg grating as a spectral filter in the OPO cavity. The signal-idler frequency difference can be tuned from 0.5 to 7 THz, which makes the OPO suitable for cw THz generation by optical heterodyning. The operation of the OPO within this singly-resonant regime is characterized by a strong self-stabilization effect. A gradual transition to an unstable, doubly-resonant regime is observed for a signal-idler detuning smaller than ~0.5 THz.
