Photon lifetime in a cavity containing a slow-light medium

Nonequilibrium dynamics of the Jaynes-Cummings dimer

We investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of a Josephson-coupled Jaynes-Cummings dimer in the presence of Kerr nonlinearity, which can be realized in the cavity and circuit quantum electrodynamics systems. The semiclassical dynamics is analyzed systematically to chart out a variety of photonic Josephson oscillations and their regime of stability. Different types of transitions between the dynamical states lead to the self-trapping phenomenon, which results in photon population imbalance between the two cavities. We also study the dynamics quantum mechanically to identify characteristic features of different steady states and to explore fascinating quantum effects, such as spin dephasing, phase fluctuation, and revival phenomena of the photon field, as well as the entanglement of spin qubits. For a particular "self-trapped" state, the mutual information between the atomic qubits exhibits a direct correlation with the photon population imbalance, which is promising for generating photon mediated entanglement between two non interacting qubits in a controlled manner. Under a sudden quench from stable to unstable regime, the photon distribution exhibits phase space mixing with a rapid loss of coherence, resembling a thermal state. Finally, we discuss the relevance of the new results in experiments, which can have applications in quantum information processing and quantum technologies.

Coherence time of a cold-atom laser below threshold

We experimentally study the coherence time of a below-threshold Raman laser in which the gain medium is a gas of magneto-optically trapped atoms. The second-order optical coherence exhibits photon bunching with a correlation time that is varied by two orders of magnitude by controlling the gain. Results are in good agreement with a simple analytic model that suggests the effect is dominated by gain, rather than dispersion, in this system. Cavity ring-down measurements show the photon lifetime, related to the first-order coherence time, is also increased.

Coherent control of group index and magneto-optical anisotropy in a multilevel atomic vapor

We study electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a heated potassium vapor cell, using a simple optical setup with a single free-running diode laser and an acousto-optic modulator. Despite the fact that the Doppler width is comparable to the ground state hyperfine splitting, transparency windows with deeply sub-natural line widths and large group indices are obtained. A longitudinal magnetic field is used to split the EIT feature and induce magneto-optical anisotropy. Using the beat note between co-propagating coupling and probe beams, we perform a heterodyne measurement of the circular dichroism (and therefore birefringence) of the EIT medium. The observed spectra reveal that lin‖lin polarizations lead to greater anisotropy than lin⊥lin. A simplified ‖analytical model encompassing sixteen Zeeman states and eighteen Λ subsytems reproduces the experimental observations.

Millisecond Photon Lifetime in a Slow-Light Microcavity

Optical microcavities with ultralong photon storage times are of central importance for integrated nanophotonics. To date, record quality (Q) factors up to 10^{11} have been measured in millimetric-size single-crystal whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) resonators, and 10^{10} in silica or glass microresonators. We show that, by introducing slow-light effects in an active WGM microresonator, it is possible to enhance the photon lifetime by several orders of magnitude, thus circumventing both fabrication imperfections and residual absorption. The slow-light effect is obtained from coherent population oscillations in an erbium-doped fluoride glass microsphere, producing strong dispersion of the WGM (group index n_{g}∼10^{6}). As a result, a photon lifetime up to 2.5 ms at room temperature has been measured, corresponding to a Q factor of 3×10^{12} at 1530 nm. This system could yield a new type of optical memory microarray with ultralong storage times.

Lasing dynamics of super and sub luminal lasers

We study theoretically the lasing properties and the cavity lifetime of super and sub-luminal lasers. We find that obtaining the necessary conditions for superluminal lasing requires care and that a laser operating under these conditions can under some conditions tend towards bi-frequency lasing. In contrast, conditions for a subluminal laser are less stringent, and in most situations its steady-state properties are well predicted by the self-consistent single-frequency laser equations. We also study the relaxation time of power perturbation in super and sub-luminal lasers using a finite-difference-time-domain tool and present the impact of the lasing power, the group velocity and the dispersion properties of the cavity on the relaxation dynamic of such perturbations. For the subluminal laser, we find that the time constant changes by a factor that is close to the group index. In contrast, for the superluminal laser, we find that the time constant does not change by the factor given by the group index, and remains close to or above the value for an empty cavity. These finding may be interpreted to imply that the quantum noise limited linewidth of the subluminal laser decreases with increasing group index, while the same for the superluminal laser does not increase with decreasing group index. The implications of these findings on the sensitivity of sensors based on these lasers are discussed in details.

Optical pulsing in a resonator with a highly dispersive nonlinearity

By introducing an intracavity Doppler shift in a resonator with a highly dispersive nonlinear medium, a train of optical pulses is generated whose features are related to the slow/fast-light response of the medium. The cavity transmission is asymmetric and the pulse shape is modified differently depending on the direction of the Doppler shift, hence, on the sign of the group delay provided by the dispersive process.
