Multifocus with small size, uniform intensity, and nearly circular symmetry

Creation of independently controllable multiple focal spots from segmented Pancharatnam-Berry phases

Recently, based on space-variant Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phases, various flat devices allowing abrupt changes of beam parameters have been predicted and demonstrated to implement intriguing manipulation on spin states in three dimensions, including the efficient generation of vector beams, spin Hall effect of light and light-guiding confinement, and so on. Here, we report on the construction of independently controllable multiple focal spots with different inhomogeneous polarization states by utilizing segmented PB phases. Combining the phase shift approach with PB phases, we engineer fan-shaped segmented PB phases and encode them onto two spin components that compose a hybrid polarized vector beam in a modified common-path interferometer system. Experimental results demonstrate that the fan-shaped segmented PB phase enables the flexible manipulation of focal number, array structure and polarization state of each focal spot. Furthermore, we demonstrate that this fan-shaped approach enables to flexibly tailor the polarization state and the spin angular momentum distribution of a tightly focused field, which have potential applications in optical manipulation, tailored optical response and imaging etc.

Focus shaping by tailoring arbitrary hybrid polarization states that have a combination of orthogonal linear polarization bases

We report a focus shaping method by tailoring hybrid states of polarization of arbitrary polarized beams that have a combination of orthogonal linear polarization bases. Such hybridly polarized beams comprising linear, elliptical, and circular polarizations in the beam cross section, have completely different optical properties compared to the scalar and locally linear-polarized vector beams. We demonstrate that, apart from the orientation of the local polarization state, another two degrees of freedom including the local ellipticity and the handedness in the beam cross section can be used in focus shaping. Square-shaped patterns, multiple foci, three-dimensional optical cages, optical needles, and channels can be obtained due to the increased control without any additional phase or amplitude modulations.

Three-dimensional super-resolution longitudinal magnetization spot arrays

We demonstrate an all-optical strategy for realizing spherical three-dimensional (3D) super-resolution (∼λ³/22) spot arrays of pure longitudinal magnetization by exploiting a 4π optical microscopic setup with two high numerical aperture (NA) objective lenses, which focus and interfere two modulated vectorial beams. Multiple phase filters (MPFs) are designed via an analytical approach derived from the vectorial Debye diffraction theory to modulate the two circularly polarized beams. The system is tailored to constructively interfere the longitudinal magnetization components, while simultaneously destructively interfering the azimuthal ones. As a result, the magnetization field is not only purely longitudinal but also super-resolved in all three dimensions. Furthermore, the MPFs can be designed analytically to control the number and locations of the super-resolved magnetization spots to produce both uniform and nonuniform arrays in a 3D volume. Thus, an all-optical control of all the properties of light-induced magnetization spot arrays has been demonstrated for the first time. These results open up broad applications in magnetic-optical devices such as confocal and multifocal magnetic resonance microscopy, 3D ultrahigh-density magneto-optic memory, and light-induced magneto-lithography.

Three-dimensional shape-controllable focal spot array created by focusing vortex beams modulated by multi-value pure-phase grating

We propose a method for creating a three-dimensional (3D) shape-controllable focal spot array by combination of a two-dimensional (2D) pure-phase modulation grating and an additional axial shifting pure-phase modulation composed of four-quadrant phase distribution unit at the back aperture of a high numerical aperture (NA) objective. It is demonstrated that the one-dimensional (1D) grating designed by optimized algorithm of selected number of equally spaced arbitrary phase value in a single period could produce desired number of equally spaced diffraction spot with identical intensity. It is also shown that the 2D pure-phase grating designed with this method could generate 2D diffraction spot array. The number of the spots in the array along each of two dimensions depends solely on the number of divided area with different phase values of the dimension. We also show that, by combining the axial translation phase modulation at the back aperture, we can create 3D focal spot array at the focal volume of the high NA objective. Furthermore, the shape or intensity distribution of each focal spot in the 3D focal array can be manipulated by introducing spatially shifted multi vortex beams as the incident beam. These kinds of 3D shape-controllable focal spot array could be utilized in the fabrication of artificial metamaterials, in parallel optical micromanipulation and multifocal multiphoton microscopic imaging.

Multifocal spot array generated by fractional Talbot effect phase-only modulation

We propose an approach for generating a multifocal spot array (MSA) with a high numerical aperture (NA) objective. The MSA is generated by using a special designed phase-only modulation at the back aperture of an objective. Without using any iteration algorithm, the modulated phase pattern is directly obtained by the simple analytical expressions based on the fractional Talbot effect. It is shown that the number of the spots in the focal region depends solely on the fractional Talbot parameter. By engineering the phase pattern with a large fractional Talbot parameter, a large number of focal spots can be created. Furthermore, the intensity distribution of each focal spot can be manipulated by introducing a composite spatially shifted vortex beam (CSSVB) as the incident field, leading to creation of various kinds of specific shaped spots. Consequently, the MSA composed of multiple individual spots with specific shape is created by focusing the CSSVB combined with the multifocal phase-only modulation. These kinds of MSAs may be found applications in parallel optical micromanipulation, multifocal multiphoton microscopic imaging, and parallel laser printing nanofabrication.

Tight focusing of quasi-cylindrically polarized beams

Based on vectorial diffraction theory, tight focusing properties of quasi-cylindrical polarized beams (QCPBs) composed of equal fan-shaped sectors with linear polarization are investigated. We find that, for quasi-radially polarized illumination, a weak azimuthal component emerges and the circular symmetry of focus is traded in when the total number of sector N is small, but when N≥8 it is approaching that of a perfect radially polarized beam with a deviation smaller than 5.3% and a ratio of maximum total intensity larger than 95.5%. Meanwhile, for quasi-azimuthal polarized illumination, although weak radial and longitudinal components emerge, it is also close to that of the perfect azimuthally polarized beam when N≥8 with deviation smaller than 5.3% and a ratio larger than 95.0%. These results not only reveal a deep understanding of the focusing properties of QCPBs, but also provide an important contribution toward optimization of the monolithic methods for generating vector beams.

Control of the multifocal properties of composite vector beams in tightly focusing systems

The numbers of the focal spots and the dominant field (i.e., whether the axial field or the transverse fields play dominant role in the focusing field) have significant effects on various applications. In this paper, we have derived the universal imaging model of the composite vector beam (CVB) composed of two orthogonally linearly polarized beams with inhomogeneous polarization modulation, which is also suitable for various polarized beams, such as linearly, circularly, radially, azimuthally, and vortex polarized beams. Moreover, the sin&cos amplitude modulation with arbitrary orders and the pupil filters with cylindrical symmetry are also involved in this imaging model. On the basis of this imaging model, the regulars to control the focal numbers and the dominant field are drawn. For the various applications, some important conclusions and constructive advices are given.
