Ultra-compact optical full-adder based on directed logic and microring resonators

Photonic integrated circuits with compact design have opened possibilities for the development of optical computing systems; however, the overuse of photonic components in optical designs has slowed the progress of dense integration. In this paper, we propose an ultra-compact optical full-adder based on directed logic and microring resonators. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed structure requires fewer optical components than any other current designs, resulting in a significantly reduced footprint 59.2µm×29.2µm. Also, the proposed structure exhibits a maximum delay time of approximately 10 ps, implying a minimum date rate of 100 GHz. Simulation results by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed optical full-adder.

Recent advances in integrated optical directed logic operations for high performance optical computing: a review

Optical directed logic (DL) is a novel logic operation scheme that employs electrical signals as operands to control the working states of optical switches to perform the logic functions. This review first provides an overview of the concept and working principle of DL. The developing trends of DL computing are then discussed in detail, including the fundamental optical DL gates, combinational optical DL operations, reconfigurable logic computing, low power optical logic computing, and programmable photonic network. The concluding remarks provide an outlook on the DL future development and its impacts in optical computing.

All-optical ultrafast XOR/XNOR logic gates, binary counter, and double-bit comparator with silicon microring resonators

We present designs of all-optical ultrafast YES/NOT, XOR/XNOR logic gates, binary counter, and double-bit comparator based on all-optical switching by two-photon absorption induced free-carrier injection in silicon 2 × 2 add-drop microring resonators. The proposed circuits have been theoretically analyzed using time-domain coupled-mode theory based on reported experimental values to realize low power (∼ 28 mW) ultrafast (∼ 22 ps) operation with high modulation (80%) and bit rate (45 Gb/s). The designs are complementary metal-oxide semiconductor compatible and provide advantages of high Q-factor, tunability, compactness, cascadibility, scalability, reconfigurability, simplicity, and minimal number of switches and inputs for realization of the desired logic. Although a two-bit counter has been shown, the scheme can easily be extended to N-bit counter through cascading.

1 Gbps directed optical decoder based on two cascaded microring resonators

We report an electro-optic directed optical decoder based on two cascaded microring resonators (MRRs). PN junctions embedded around the MRRs are employed to modulate the MRRs through the carrier-injection scheme. The optical decoding function from a 2-bit electrical signal to a 4-bit optical signal at the speed of 1 Gbps is performed successfully by the device.

Demonstration of a directed optical encoder using microring-resonator-based optical switches

We propose and demonstrate a directed optical logic circuit that performs the encoding function from a 4 bit electrical signal to a 2 bit optical signal based on cascaded microring switches. The four logic input signals control the states of the switches, while the two logic outputs are given by the optical power at the output waveguides. For proof of concept, a thermo-optic switching effect is used with an operation speed of 10 kbps.
