High-damage-threshold static laser beam shaping using optically patterned liquid-crystal devices

Multiparameter laser performance characterization of liquid crystals for polarization control devices in the nanosecond regime

Interactions of liquid crystals (LC’s) with polarized light have been studied widely and have spawned numerous device applications, including the fabrication of optical elements for high-power and large-aperture laser systems. Currently, little is known about both the effect of incident polarization state on laser-induced–damage threshold (LIDT) and laser-induced functional threshold (LIFT) behavior at sub-LIDT fluences under multipulse irradiation conditions. This work reports on the first study of the nanosecond-pulsed LIDT’s dependence on incident polarization for several optical devices employing oriented nematic and chiral-nematic LC’s oriented by surface alignment layers. Accelerated lifetime testing was also performed to characterize the ability of these devices to maintain their functional performance under multipulse irradiation as a function of the laser fluence at both 1053 nm and 351 nm. Results show that the LIDT varies as a function of input polarization by 30–80% within the same device, while the multipulse LIFT (which can differ from the nominal LIDT) depends on irradiation conditions such as laser fluence and wavelength.

Femtosecond laser-induced damage threshold of nematic liquid crystals at 1030 nm

The laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of nematic liquid crystals is investigated in the femtosecond regime at ≃1030nm. The thickness and breakdown of freely suspended thin films (≃100nm) of different mixtures (MLC2073, MLC2132, and E7) is monitored in real time by spectral-domain interferometry. The duration of laser pulses was varied from 180 fs to 1.8 ps for repetition rates ranging from single shot to 1 MHz. The dependence of the LIDT with pulse duration suggests a damage mechanism dominated by ionization mechanisms at low repetition rate and by linear absorption at high repetition rate. In the single-shot regime, LIDTs exceeding 1J/cm² are found for the three investigated mixtures. The LIDT of polyvinyl alcohol is also investigated by the same method.

Investigation of focusing and correcting aberrations with binary amplitude and polarization modulation

We investigate the focusing and correcting wavefront aberration of an optical wave using binary amplitude and polarization modulation. Focusing is performed by selectively modulating the field in different zones of the pupil to obtain on-axis constructive interference at a given distance. The conventional Soret zone plate (binary amplitude profile) is expanded to a polarization Soret zone plate with twice the focusing efficiency. Binary pixelated devices that approximate the sinusoidal transmission profile of a Gabor zone plate by spatial dithering are also investigated with amplitude and polarization modulation. Wavefront aberrations are corrected by modulation of the field in the pupil plane to prevent destructive interference in the focal plane of an ideal focusing element. Polarization modulation improves the efficiency obtained by amplitude-only modulation, with a gain that depends on the aberration. Experimental results obtained with Cr-on-glass devices for amplitude modulation and liquid crystal devices operating in the Mauguin condition for polarization modulation are in very good agreement with simulations.

Experimental observations of a laser suppression imaging system using pupil-plane phase elements

To help diminish the undesirable effects of laser irradiation on an imaging sensor, a pupil-plane phase element was introduced to broaden the point spread function, thereby reducing the focused laser irradiance. A sharpened image was subsequently restored via Wiener deconvolution. Successful experimental demonstrations employing a spatial light modulator in the pupil plane are reported for the vortex, axicon, and cubic phase. Furthermore, to circumvent information loss owing to zero values in the modulation transfer function, we demonstrate how images with different phase elements, combined with a joint deconvolution operation, provide an improved image.

Model-based optimization of near-field binary-pixelated beam shapers

The optimization of components that rely on spatially dithered distributions of transparent or opaque pixels and an imaging system with far-field filtering for transmission control is demonstrated. The binary-pixel distribution can be iteratively optimized to lower an error function that takes into account the design transmission and the characteristics of the required far-field filter. Simulations using a design transmission chosen in the context of high-energy lasers show that the beam-fluence modulation at an image plane can be reduced by a factor of 2, leading to performance similar to using a non-optimized spatial-dithering algorithm with pixels of size reduced by a factor of 2 without the additional fabrication complexity or cost. The optimization process preserves the pixel distribution statistical properties. Analysis shows that the optimized pixel distribution starting from a high-noise distribution defined by a random-draw algorithm should be more resilient to fabrication errors than the optimized pixel distributions starting from a low-noise, error-diffusion algorithm, while leading to similar beam-shaping performance. This is confirmed by experimental results obtained with various pixel distributions and induced fabrication errors.

Liquid crystal Fresnel zone lens based on single-side-patterned photoalignment layer

In this article, we disclose a method to fabricate a liquid crystal (LC) Fresnel zone lens (FZL) with high efficiency. The LCFZL, based on patterned planar-aligned regions, has been prepared by means of a two-step photoalignment technique. The proposed binary-phase LCFZL manifests 39% diffraction efficiency at the focal point, which is close to the theoretical limit, 41%. Moreover, because of a lower driving voltage and faster response time, these elements could find application in many modern devices.

Switchable Fresnel lens based on micropatterned alignment

In this Letter we disclose a method to fabricate a liquid crystal (LC) Fresnel zone lens (FZL) with higher efficiency. The LCFZL, based on alternate twisted nematic (TN) and planar aligned (PA) regions, has been prepared by means of a two-step photo-alignment process. The FZL profile for both optical regimes, i.e., in TN and PA alignment domains, generates the same focal length (f). Thus, the proposed LCFZL manifests double light intensity at the focal point and therefore offers double the efficiency of existing FZLs. Moreover, because of lower driving voltage and fast response, these elements could find application in many modern devices.

Analysis of the chromaticity of near-field binary beam shapers

The chromatic properties of binary beam shapers inducing a spatially dependent transmission on the near field of an optical source after far-field filtering and imaging are derived. Beam shapers using pixels with two transmission states are highly versatile and have been experimentally realized with distributions of amplitude pixels, phase pixels, or polarization pixels that can be designed using a half-toning algorithm. The amplitude of the shaped beam in an image plane has a precisely controlled continuous profile given by the local density of the two pixel types in the object plane. The wavelength dependence of the field transmission corresponding to the full range of design transmission between 0 and 1 is studied analytically to assess the general performance of the corresponding beam shapers for broadband sources, with an example of a specific 2D transmission profile relevant to laser engineering. Amplitude beam shapers have no significant chromaticity, but have low damage threshold. The high-damage-threshold twisted nematic liquid crystal and phase shapers induce a wavelength-dependent transmission and phase on the shaped beam.
