Design of a subnanometer resolution beam position monitor for dielectric laser accelerators

Frequency-domain calculation of Smith-Purcell radiation for metallic and dielectric gratings

The intensity of Smith-Purcell radiation from metallic and dielectric gratings (silicon, silica) is compared in a frequency-domain simulation. The numerical model is discussed and verified with the Frank-Tamm formula for Cherenkov radiation. For 30 keV electrons, rectangular dielectric gratings are less efficient than their metallic counterparts, by an order of magnitude for silicon, and two orders of magnitude for silica. For all gratings studied, radiation intensity oscillates with grating tooth height due to electromagnetic resonances in the grating. 3D and 2D numerical models are compared.

Dielectric Laser Accelerators: Designs, Experiments, and Applications

Novel laser-powered accelerating structures at the miniaturized scale of an optical wavelength [Formula: see text] open a pathway to high repetition rate, attosecond scale electron bunches that can be accelerated with gradients exceeding 1 GeV/m. Although the theoretical and computational study of dielectric laser accelerators dates back many decades, recently the first experimental realizations of this novel class of accelerators have been demonstrated. We review recent developments in fabrication, testing, and demonstration of these micron scale devices. In particular, prospects for applications of this accelerator technology are evaluated.

Electron beam position monitor for a dielectric microaccelerator

We report the fabrication and first demonstration of an electron beam position monitor for a dielectric microaccelerator. This device is fabricated on a fused silica substrate using standard optical lithography techniques and uses the radiated optical wavelength to measure the electron beam position with a resolution of 10 μm, or 7% of the electron beam spot size. This device also measures the electron beam spot size in one dimension.
