Luminescent Polymer Composites for Optical Fiber Sensors

Optical fiber sensors incorporating luminescent materials are useful for detecting physical parameters and biochemical species. Fluorescent materials integrated on the tips of optical fibers, for example, provide a means to perform fluorescence thermometry while monitoring the intensity or the spectral variations of the fluorescence signal. Similarly, certain molecules can be tracked by monitoring their characteristic emission in the UV wavelength range. A key element for these sensing approaches is the luminescent composite, which may be obtained upon allocating luminescent nanomaterials in glass or polymer hosts. In this work, we explore the fluorescence features of two composites incorporating lanthanide-doped fluorescent powders using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a host. The composites are obtained by a simple mixing procedure and can be subsequently deposited onto the end faces of optical fibers via dip coating or molding. Whereas one of the composites has shown to be useful for the fabrication of fiber optic temperature sensors, the other shows promising result for detection of UV radiation. The performance of both composites is first evaluated for the fabrication of membranes by examining features such as fluorescent stability. We further explore the influence of parameters such as particle concentration and density on the fluorescence features of the polymer blends. Finally, we demonstrate the incorporation of these PDMS fluorescent composites onto optical fibers and evaluate their sensing capabilities.

Memory effect assisted imaging through multimode optical fibres

When light propagates through opaque material, the spatial information it holds becomes scrambled, but not necessarily lost. Two classes of techniques have emerged to recover this information: methods relying on optical memory effects, and transmission matrix (TM) approaches. Here we develop a general framework describing the nature of memory effects in structures of arbitrary geometry. We show how this framework, when combined with wavefront shaping driven by feedback from a guide-star, enables estimation of the TM of any such system. This highlights that guide-star assisted imaging is possible regardless of the type of memory effect a scatterer exhibits. We apply this concept to multimode fibres (MMFs) and identify a 'quasi-radial' memory effect. This allows the TM of an MMF to be approximated from only one end - an important step for micro-endoscopy. Our work broadens the applications of memory effects to a range of novel imaging and optical communication scenarios.

Time-Resolved Spectroscopy of Fluorescence Quenching in Optical Fibre-Based pH Sensors

Numerous optodes, with fluorophores as the chemical sensing element and optical fibres for light delivery and collection, have been fabricated for minimally invasive endoscopic measurements of key physiological parameters such as pH. These flexible miniaturised optodes have typically attempted to maximize signal-to-noise through the application of high concentrations of fluorophores. We show that high-density attachment of carboxyfluorescein onto silica microspheres, the sensing elements, results in fluorescence energy transfer, manifesting as reduced fluorescence intensity and lifetime in addition to spectral changes. We demonstrate that the change in fluorescence intensity of carboxyfluorescein with pH in this "high-density" regime is opposite to that normally observed, with complex variations in fluorescent lifetime across the emission spectra of coupled fluorophores. Improved understanding of such highly loaded sensor beads is important because it leads to large increases in photostability and will aid the development of compact fibre probes, suitable for clinical applications. The time-resolved spectral measurement techniques presented here can be further applied to similar studies of other optodes.
