Continuous-wave terahertz self-referencing digital holography based on Fresnel's mirrors

Dual Field-of-View Off-Axis Spatially Multiplexed Digital Holography Using Fresnel's Bi-Mirror

Digital holography (DH) is an important method for three-dimensional (3D) imaging since it allows for the recording and reconstruction of an object's amplitude and phase information. However, the field of view (FOV) of a DH system is typically restricted by the finite size of the pixel pitch of the digital image sensor. We proposed a new configuration of the DH system based on Fresnel's bi-mirror to achieve doubling the camera FOV of the existing off-axis DH system which leveraged single-shot acquisition and a common-path optical framework. The dual FOV was obtained by spatial frequency multiplexing corresponding to two different information-carrying beams from an object. Experimental evidence of the proposed dual FOV-DH system's viability was provided by imaging two different areas of the test object and an application to surface profilometry by measuring the step height of the resolution chart which showed excellent agreement with an optical profiler. Due to the simple configuration, the proposed system could find a wide range of applications, including in microscopy and optical metrology.

Dielectric Metasurface Enabled Compact, Single-Shot Digital Holography for Quantitative Phase Imaging

Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) enables nondestructive, real-time, label-free imaging of transparent specimens and can reveal information about their fundamental properties such as cell size and morphology, mass density, particle dynamics, and cellular fluctuations. Development of high-performance and low-cost quantitative phase imaging systems is thus required in many fields, including on-site biomedical imaging and industrial inspection. Here, we propose an ultracompact, highly stable interferometer based on a single-layer dielectric metasurface for common path off-axis digital holography and experimentally demonstrate quantitative phase imaging. The interferometric imaging system leveraging an ultrathin multifunctional metasurface captures image plane holograms in a single shot and provides quantitative phase information on the test samples for extraction of its physical properties. With the benefits of planar engineering and high integrability, the proposed metasurface-based method establishes a stable miniaturized QPI system for reliable and cost-effective point-of-care devices, live cell imaging, 3D topography, and edge detection for optical computing.

Terahertz ptychography using a long-distance diffraction-free beam as the probe

We have implemented a terahertz (THz) ptychographic technique using a long-distance diffraction-free beam (DFB) instead of traditional low-energy pinhole-defined illumination as the probe. The DFB generating system containing two lens-axicon doublets is very easily realized. Measured transverse intensities of such a DFB display an Airy-pattern-like distribution. Based on the well-developed extended ptychographic iterative engine, we simultaneously reconstruct a phase object and the DFB probe with both simulated and real data. Further calculation shows that the DFB has abundant spatial high-frequency components that guarantee high coherence of the illuminating probe beam in our THz ptychographic system. In addition, we firmly believe that the proposed approach can be easily transplanted to the ptychography at other frequency bands as both lens and axicon are very common optical elements.

Transport of intensity equation-based terahertz lensless full-field phase imaging

Terahertz (THz) phase imaging is widely spreading in various scenarios, among which full-field phase distributions are commonly retrieved by digital holography or ptychography. In this Letter, the transport of the intensity equation reconstruction method is applied into the THz band. An algorithm named the lensless US-transport of intensity equation (TIE) is proposed to accommodate to an in-line configuration. The object phase is retrieved by primarily conducting iterations between the axial intensity derivative and the phase distribution at the recording plane and subsequent backward diffraction propagation. This method is applicable to both isolated and extended weakly absorbing samples with higher reconstruction quality and remarkably less time cost than holographic phase retrieval algorithms. It can also be attempted in other non-interferometric geometries or using low-cost partially coherent THz sources, which significantly broaden the application scope of THz phase imaging.

Lens-free digital holographic microscopy for cell imaging and tracking by Fresnel diffraction from a phase discontinuity

In this Letter, a very simple, stable, and portable lensless digital holographic (DH) microscopy method is presented relying on the Fresnel diffraction (FD) of light from a phase discontinuity (PD). A phase plate in the transmission or a physical step in the reflection can be employed in the path of the divergent beam of a coherent light source as a component imposing the PD. The recorded diffraction pattern in the vicinity of the PD is a hologram produced by off-axis overlapping of two diffracted waves in both sides of the boundary region with adjustable fringe modulation. To validate the method, measurements are performed on the amplitude and phase specimens as well as on the dynamic processes of water evaporation and 3D tracking of floating cells. A reflective configuration of FD from a physical step can be used as a powerful platform for lensless DH microscopy using high-energy electromagnetic radiation, e.g., x-ray and UV sources for the high-resolution imaging of moving samples.

Continuous-Wave THz Imaging for Biomedical Samples

In the past few decades, the applications of terahertz (THz) spectroscopy and imaging technology have seen significant developments in the fields of biology, medical diagnosis, food safety, and nondestructive testing. Label-free diagnosis of malignant tumours has been obtained and also achieved significant development in THz biomedical imaging. This review mainly presents the research status and prospects of several common continuous-wave (CW) THz medical imaging systems and applications of THz medical imaging in biological tissues. Here, we first introduce the properties of THz waves and how these properties play a role in biomedical imaging. Then, we analyse both the advantages and disadvantages of the CW THz imaging methods and the progress of these methods in THz biomedical imaging in recent ten years. Finally, we summarise the obstacles in the way of the application of THz bio-imaging application technology in clinical detection, which need to be investigated and overcome in the future.
