Decoupling excitons from high-frequency vibrations in organic molecules

The coupling of excitons in π-conjugated molecules to high-frequency vibrational modes, particularly carbon-carbon stretch modes (1,000-1,600 cm-1) has been thought to be unavoidable1,2. These high-frequency modes accelerate non-radiative losses and limit the performance of light-emitting diodes, fluorescent biomarkers and photovoltaic devices. Here, by combining broadband impulsive vibrational spectroscopy, first-principles modelling and synthetic chemistry, we explore exciton-vibration coupling in a range of π-conjugated molecules. We uncover two design rules that decouple excitons from high-frequency vibrations. First, when the exciton wavefunction has a substantial charge-transfer character with spatially disjoint electron and hole densities, we find that high-frequency modes can be localized to either the donor or acceptor moiety, so that they do not significantly perturb the exciton energy or its spatial distribution. Second, it is possible to select materials such that the participating molecular orbitals have a symmetry-imposed non-bonding character and are, thus, decoupled from the high-frequency vibrational modes that modulate the π-bond order. We exemplify both these design rules by creating a series of spin radical systems that have very efficient near-infrared emission (680-800 nm) from charge-transfer excitons. We show that these systems have substantial coupling to vibrational modes only below 250 cm-1, frequencies that are too low to allow fast non-radiative decay. This enables non-radiative decay rates to be suppressed by nearly two orders of magnitude in comparison to π-conjugated molecules with similar bandgaps. Our results show that losses due to coupling to high-frequency modes need not be a fundamental property of these systems.

Application of density matrix Wigner transforms for ultrafast macromolecular and chemical x-ray crystallography

Time-Resolved Serial Femtosecond Crystallography (TR-SFX) conducted at X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs) has become a powerful tool for capturing macromolecular structural movies of light-initiated processes. As the capabilities of XFELs advance, we anticipate that a new range of coherent control and structural Raman measurements will become achievable. Shorter optical and x-ray pulse durations and increasingly more exotic pulse regimes are becoming available at free electron lasers. Moreover, with high repetition enabled by the superconducting technology of European XFEL (EuXFEL) and Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS-II) , it will be possible to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the light-induced differences, allowing for the observation of vibronic motion on the sub-Angstrom level. To predict and assign this coherent motion, which is measurable with a structural technique, new theoretical approaches must be developed. In this paper, we present a theoretical density matrix approach to model the various population and coherent dynamics of a system, which considers molecular system parameters and excitation conditions. We emphasize the use of the Wigner transform of the time-dependent density matrix, which provides a phase space representation that can be directly compared to the experimental positional displacements measured in a TR-SFX experiment. Here, we extend the results from simple models to include more realistic schemes that include large relaxation terms. We explore a variety of pulse schemes using multiple model systems using realistic parameters. An open-source software package is provided to perform the density matrix simulation and Wigner transformations. The open-source software allows us to define any arbitrary level schemes as well as any arbitrary electric field in the interaction Hamiltonian.

Observation of Coherent Symmetry-Breaking Vibration by Polarization-Dependent Femtosecond Spectroscopy

Understanding photoinduced chemical reactions beyond the Born-Oppenheimer paradigm requires a comprehensive examination of vibronic interactions. Although femtosecond studies have unveiled the influence of vibrational modes strongly coupled to ultrafast intramolecular reactions in the excited state, they often lack direct observations of how vibrations modulate electronic properties due to the rapid disappearance of reactants. To address this gap, our research investigates the dynamics of photoexcited molecules that do not react. Specifically, we focus on the coherent librational motion of molecular transition dipole moments, discovering that the coherent libration primarily originates from symmetry-breaking components in vibronically excited vibrational modes. Symmetry breaking motion can significantly impact the excited-state dynamics of highly symmetric molecules, potentially leading to nonadiabatic transitions. In essence, the data analysis framework introduced in this study can be harnessed to uncover potential reactivity in photoexcited molecules, further enhancing our understanding of the mechanisms governing these reactions.

Tailoring Interlayer Charge Transfer Dynamics in 2D Perovskites with Electroactive Spacer Molecules

The family of hybrid organic-inorganic lead-halide perovskites are the subject of intense interest for optoelectronic applications, from light-emitting diodes to photovoltaics to X-ray detectors. Due to the inert nature of most organic molecules, the inorganic sublattice generally dominates the electronic structure and therefore the optoelectronic properties of perovskites. Here, we use optically and electronically active carbazole-based Cz-Ci molecules, where Ci indicates an alkylammonium chain and i indicates the number of CH2 units in the chain, varying from 3 to 5, as cations in the two-dimensional (2D) perovskite structure. By investigating the photophysics and charge transport characteristics of (Cz-Ci)2PbI4, we demonstrate a tunable electronic coupling between the inorganic lead-halide and organic layers. The strongest interlayer electronic coupling was found for (Cz-C3)2PbI4, where photothermal deflection spectroscopy results remarkably reveal an organic-inorganic charge transfer state. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy measurements demonstrate ultrafast hole transfer from the photoexcited lead-halide layer to the Cz-Ci molecules, the efficiency of which increases by varying the chain length from i = 5 to i = 3. The charge transfer results in long-lived carriers (10-100 ns) and quenched emission, in stark contrast to the fast (sub-ns) and efficient radiative decay of bound excitons in the more conventional 2D perovskite (PEA)2PbI4, in which phenylethylammonium (PEA) acts as an inert spacer. Electrical charge transport measurements further support enhanced interlayer coupling, showing increased out-of-plane carrier mobility from i = 5 to i = 3. This study paves the way for the rational design of 2D perovskites with combined inorganic-organic electronic properties through the wide range of functionalities available in the world of organics.

Sub-8-fs pulses in the visible to near-infrared by a degenerate optical parametric amplifier

This work presents a single-stage optical parametric amplifier (OPA) operating at degeneracy (DOPA) and pumped by the third harmonic of a Yb:KGW laser system. This DOPA exploits the broad amplification bandwidth that occurs with type-I phase-matching in β-barium borate (BBO) when signal and idler overlap in the spectrum. The output pulses span from 590 to 780 nm (1.59-2.10 eV) with 7.75-fs duration after compression. Ultrashort pulses with similar bandwidths in this spectral window complement the existing array of optical parametric amplifiers that cover either the visible or the near-IR spectral regions with sub-10-fs pulses. This source of ultrashort optical pulses will enable the application of sophisticated spectroscopy techniques to the study of electronic coherences and energy migration pathways in biological, chemical, and condensed matter systems.

Breaking Barriers in Ultrafast Spectroscopy and Imaging Using 100 kHz Amplified Yb-Laser Systems

ConspectusUltrafast spectroscopy and imaging have become tools utilized by a broad range of scientists involved in materials, energy, biological, and chemical sciences. Commercialization of ultrafast spectrometers including transient absorption spectrometers, vibrational sum frequency generation spectrometers, and even multidimensional spectrometers have put these advanced spectroscopy measurements into the hands of practitioners originally outside the field of ultrafast spectroscopy. There is now a technology shift occurring in ultrafast spectroscopy, made possible by new Yb-based lasers, that is opening exciting new experiments in the chemical and physical sciences. Amplified Yb-based lasers are not only more compact and efficient than their predecessors but also, most importantly, operate at many times the repetition rate with improved noise characteristics in comparison to the previous generation of Ti:sapphire amplifier technologies. Taken together, these attributes are enabling new experiments, generating improvements to long-standing techniques, and affording the transformation of spectroscopies to microscopies. This Account aims to show that the shift to 100 kHz lasers is a transformative step in nonlinear spectroscopy and imaging, much like the dramatic expansion that occurred with the commercialization of Ti:sapphire laser systems in the 1990s. The impact of this technology will be felt across a great swath of scientific communities. We first describe the technology landscape of amplified Yb-based laser systems used in conjunction with 100 kHz spectrometers operating with shot-to-shot pulse shaping and detection. We also identify the range of different parametric conversion and supercontinuum techniques which now provide a path to making pulses of light optimal for ultrafast spectroscopy. Second, we describe specific instances from our laboratories of how the amplified Yb-based light sources and spectrometers are transformative. For multiple probe time-resolved infrared and transient 2D IR spectroscopy, the gain in temporal span and signal-to-noise enables dynamical spectroscopy measurements from femtoseconds to seconds. These gains widen the applicability of time-resolved infrared techniques across a range of topics in photochemistry, photocatalysis, and photobiology as well as lower the technical barriers to implementation in a laboratory. For 2D visible spectroscopy and microscopy with white light, as well as 2D IR imaging, the high repetition rates of these new Yb-based light sources allow one to spatially map 2D spectra while maintaining high signal-to-noise in the data. To illustrate the gains, we provide examples of imaging applications in the study of photovoltaic materials and spectroelectrochemistry.

Rapid-Scan Resonant Two-Dimensional Impulsive Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy of Excited States

Photochemical reactions occur in the electronically excited state, which is effectively represented by a multidimensional potential energy surface (PES) with a vast degree of freedom of nuclear coordinates. The elucidation of the intricate shape of the PES constitutes an important topic in the field of photochemistry and has long been studied both experimentally and theoretically. Recently, fully time-domain resonant two-dimensional Raman spectroscopy has emerged as a potentially powerful tool to provide unique information about the coupling between vibrational manifolds in the excited state. However, the wide application of this technique has been significantly hampered by the technical difficulties associated with experimental implementation and remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrate time-domain resonant two-dimensional impulsive stimulated Raman spectroscopy (2D-ISRS) of excited states using sub-10 fs pulses based on the rapid scan of the time delay, which facilitates the efficient collection of time-domain vibrational signals with high sensitivity. As a proof-of-principle experiment, we performed 2D-ISRS of 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene (TIPS-pentacene) in solution. Through 2D Fourier transformation of the high-quality time-time oscillatory signal, we obtained a 2D frequency-frequency correlation map of excited-state TIPS-pentacene in the broad frequency window of 0-2000 cm^-1. The data clearly resolve a number of cross peaks that signify the correlations among excited-state vibrational manifolds. The high capability of the rapid-scan-based 2D-ISRS spectrometer presented in this study enables the systematic investigation of various photochemical reaction systems, thereby further promoting the understanding and applications of this new multidimensional spectroscopy.

Transient absorption spectroscopy based on uncompressed hollow core fiber white light proves pre-association between a radical ion photocatalyst and substrate

We present a hollow-core fiber (HCF) based transient absorption experiment, with capabilities beyond common titanium:sapphire based setups. By spectral filtering of the HCF spectrum, we provide pump pulses centered at 425 nm with several hundred nJ of pulse energy at the sample position. By employing the red edge of the HCF output for seeding CaF₂, we obtain smooth probing spectra in the range between 320 and 900 nm. We demonstrate the capabilities of our experiment by following the ultrafast relaxation dynamics of a radical cationic photocatalyst to prove its pre-association with an arene substrate, a phenomenon that was not detectable previously by steady-state spectroscopic techniques. The detected preassembly rationalizes the successful participation of radical ionic photocatalysts in single electron transfer reactions, a notion that has been subject to controversy in recent years.

Sub-three-cycle pulses at 2 µm from a degenerate optical parametric amplifier

In this work we present a compact two-stage optical parametric amplifier (OPA) pumped at degeneracy by the fundamental of a Yb:KGW laser system. The output pulses span from 1.7 to 2.5 µm (120-176 THz) and are compressed to a sub-20 fs duration. This parametric amplifier exploits the broad phase-matching bandwidth at the degeneracy point in bismuth triborate (BiBO) and periodically poled lithium tantalate (PPLT). The result drastically expands the availability of ultrashort pulses with few-microjoule energy from near-infrared (NIR) to even longer wavelengths in the mid-infrared (MIR) spectral region.

Untargeted effects in organic exciton-polariton transient spectroscopy: A cautionary tale

Strong light-matter coupling to form exciton- and vibropolaritons is increasingly touted as a powerful tool to alter the fundamental properties of organic materials. It is proposed that these states and their facile tunability can be used to rewrite molecular potential energy landscapes and redirect photophysical pathways, with applications from catalysis to electronic devices. Crucial to their photophysical properties is the exchange of energy between coherent, bright polaritons and incoherent dark states. One of the most potent tools to explore this interplay is transient absorption/reflectance spectroscopy. Previous studies have revealed unexpectedly long lifetimes of the coherent polariton states, for which there is no theoretical explanation. Applying these transient methods to a series of strong-coupled organic microcavities, we recover similar long-lived spectral effects. Based on transfer-matrix modeling of the transient experiment, we find that virtually the entire photoresponse results from photoexcitation effects other than the generation of polariton states. Our results suggest that the complex optical properties of polaritonic systems make them especially prone to misleading optical signatures and that more challenging high-time-resolution measurements on high-quality microcavities are necessary to uniquely distinguish the coherent polariton dynamics.

Tracking Ultrafast Structural Dynamics by Time-Domain Raman Spectroscopy

In traditional Raman spectroscopy, narrow-band light is irradiated on a sample, and its inelastic scattering, i.e., Raman scattering, is detected. The energy difference between the Raman scattering and the incident light corresponds to the vibrational energy of the molecule, providing the Raman spectrum that contains rich information about the molecular-level properties of the materials. On the other hand, by using ultrashort optical pulses, it is possible to induce Raman-active coherent nuclear motion of the molecule and to observe the molecular vibration in real time. Moreover, this time-domain Raman measurement can be combined with femtosecond photoexcitation, triggering chemical changes, which enables tracking ultrafast structural dynamics in a form of “time-resolved” time-domain Raman spectroscopy, also known as time-resolved impulsive stimulated Raman spectroscopy. With the advent of stable, ultrashort laser pulse sources, time-resolved impulsive stimulated Raman spectroscopy now realizes high sensitivity and a wide detection frequency window from THz to 3000 cm^–1, and has seen success in unveiling the molecular mechanisms underlying the efficient functions of complex molecular systems. In this Perspective, we overview the present status of time-domain Raman spectroscopy, particularly focusing on its application to the study of femtosecond structural dynamics. We first explain the principle and a brief history of time-domain Raman spectroscopy and then describe the apparatus and recent applications to the femtosecond dynamics of complex molecular systems, including proteins, molecular assemblies, and functional materials. We also discuss future directions for time-domain Raman spectroscopy, which has reached a status allowing a wide range of applications.

A molecular movie of ultrafast singlet fission

The complex dynamics of ultrafast photoinduced reactions are governed by their evolution along vibronically coupled potential energy surfaces. It is now often possible to identify such processes, but a detailed depiction of the crucial nuclear degrees of freedom involved typically remains elusive. Here, combining excited-state time-domain Raman spectroscopy and tree-tensor network state simulations, we construct the full 108-atom molecular movie of ultrafast singlet fission in a pentacene dimer, explicitly treating 252 vibrational modes on 5 electronic states. We assign the tuning and coupling modes, quantifying their relative intensities and contributions, and demonstrate how these modes coherently synchronise to drive the reaction. Our combined experimental and theoretical approach reveals the atomic-scale singlet fission mechanism and can be generalized to other ultrafast photoinduced reactions in complex systems. This will enable mechanistic insight on a detailed structural level, with the ultimate aim to rationally design molecules to maximise the efficiency of photoinduced reactions.

Observation of Vibronic-Coupling-Mediated Energy Transfer in Light-Harvesting Nanotubes Stabilized in a Solid-State Matrix

Ultrafast vibrational spectroscopy is employed to obtain real-time structural information on energy transport in double-walled light-harvesting nanotubes at room temperature, stabilized in a host matrix to mimic the rigid scaffolds of natural light-harvesting systems. We observe evidence of a low-frequency vibrational mode at 315 cm^-1, which transfers excitons from the outer wall of the nanotubes to a crossing point through which energy transfer to the inner wall can occur. This mode is furthermore absent in solution phase. Importantly, the coherence of this mode is not transferred to the inner wall upon energy transfer and is only present on the outer wall's excited-state energy surface, highlighting that complete energy transfer between the outer and inner walls does not take place. Isolation of the individual walls of the nanotubes provides evidence that this mode corresponds to a supramolecular motion of the nanotubes. Our results emphasize the importance of the solid-state environment in modulating vibronic coupling and directing energy transfer in molecular light-harvesting systems.

Broadband 7-fs diffractive-optic-based 2D electronic spectroscopy using hollow-core fiber compression

We demonstrate noncollinear coherent two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectroscopy for which broadband pulses are generated in an argon-filled hollow-core fiber pumped by a 1-kHz Ti:Sapphire laser. Compression is achieved to 7 fs duration (TG-FROG) using dispersive mirrors. The hollow fiber provides a clean spatial profile and smooth spectral shape in the 500-700 nm region. The diffractive-optic-based design of the 2D spectrometer avoids directional filtering distortions and temporal broadening from time smearing. For demonstration we record data of cresyl-violet perchlorate in ethanol and use phasing to obtain broadband absorptive 2D spectra. The resulting quantum beating as a function of population time is consistent with literature data.

A pragmatic guide to multiphoton microscope design

Multiphoton microscopy has emerged as a ubiquitous tool for studying microscopic structure and function across a broad range of disciplines. As such, the intent of this paper is to present a comprehensive resource for the construction and performance evaluation of a multiphoton microscope that will be understandable to the broad range of scientific fields that presently exploit, or wish to begin exploiting, this powerful technology. With this in mind, we have developed a guide to aid in the design of a multiphoton microscope. We discuss source selection, optical management of dispersion, image-relay systems with scan optics, objective-lens selection, single-element light-collection theory, photon-counting detection, image rendering, and finally, an illustrated guide for building an example microscope.

500 kHz OPCPA delivering tunable sub-20 fs pulses with 15 W average power based on an all-ytterbium laser

An optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier fully based on Yb lasers at 500 kHz is described. Passive optical-synchronization is achieved between a fiber laser-pumped white-light and a 515 nm pump produced with a 200 W picosecond Yb:YAG InnoSlab amplifier. An output power up to 19.7 W with long-term stability of 0.3% is demonstrated for wavelength tunable pulses between 680 nm and 900 nm and spectral stability of 0.2%; 16.5 W can be achieved with a bandwidth supporting 5.4 fs pulses. We demonstrate compression of 30 µJ pulses to sub-20 fs duration with a prism compressor, suitable for high harmonic generation.

Population-controlled impulsive vibrational spectroscopy: background- and baseline-free Raman spectroscopy of excited electronic states

We have developed the technique of population-controlled impulsive vibrational spectroscopy (PC-IVS) aimed at providing high-quality, background-free Raman spectra of excited electronic states and their dynamics. Our approach consists of a modified transient absorption experiment using an ultrashort (<10 fs) pump pulse with additional electronic excitation and control pulses. The latter allows for the experimental isolation of excited-state vibrational coherence and, hence, vibrational spectra. We illustrate the capabilities of PC-IVS by reporting the Raman spectra of well-established molecular systems such as the carotenoid astaxanthin and trans-stilbene and present the first excited-state Raman spectra of the retinal protonated Schiff base chromophore in solution. Our approach, illustrated here with impulsive vibrational spectroscopy, is equally applicable to transient and even multidimensional infrared and electronic spectroscopies to experimentally isolate spectroscopic signatures of interest.
