Surface plasmon resonance in eccentric femtosecond-laser-induced fiber Bragg gratings

Strong enhancement of third harmonic generation from a Tamm plasmon multilayer structure with WS2

Improving the conversion efficiency is particularly important for the generation and applications of harmonic waves in optical microstructures. Herein, we propose to enhance the efficiency of third harmonic generation by integrating a monolayer WS2 with the metal/dielectric/photonic crystal multilayer structure. The numerical simulations show that the multilayer structure enables to generate the Tamm plasmon mode between the metal film and photonic crystal around the telecommunication wavelength, which is consistent with the experimental result. By measuring with a self-built nonlinear optical micro-spectroscopy system, we find that the third harmonic signal can be reinforced by 16-fold through inserting the monolayer WS2 in the dielectric spacer. This work will provide a new way for improving nonlinear optical response, especially THG in multilayer photonic microstructures.

High-temperature and stress response behavior of femtosecond laser pulses inscribed eccentric fiber Bragg gratings

Eccentric fiber Bragg grating (EFBG) is inscribed in standard communication single-mode fiber using femtosecond laser pulses, and the temperature and strain sensing characteristics are experimentally demonstrated and analyzed. The EFBG exhibits strong thermal stability and good robustness in high-temperature measurement up to 1000 °C, and undergoes different thermal sensitivities during Bragg peak and the strong resonance coupled cladding spectral comb. The temperature sensitivity linearly increases with respect to the effective index of the resonant modes. Such a situation also occurs in axial strain measurement. These characteristics are of high interest for multiparametric sensing at high temperatures.

Femtosecond-Pulsed Laser Written and Etched Fiber Bragg Gratings for Fiber-Optical Biosensing

We present the development of a label-free, highly sensitive fiber-optical biosensor for online detection and quantification of biomolecules. Here, the advantages of etched fiber Bragg gratings (eFBG) were used, since they induce a narrowband Bragg wavelength peak in the reflection operation mode. The gratings were fabricated point-by-point via a nonlinear absorption process of a highly focused femtosecond-pulsed laser, without the need of prior coating removal or specific fiber doping. The sensitivity of the Bragg wavelength peak to the surrounding refractive index (SRI), as needed for biochemical sensing, was realized by fiber cladding removal using hydrofluoric acid etching. For evaluation of biosensing capabilities, eFBG fibers were biofunctionalized with a single-stranded DNA aptamer specific for binding the C-reactive protein (CRP). Thus, the CRP-sensitive eFBG fiber-optical biosensor showed a very low limit of detection of 0.82 pg/L, with a dynamic range of CRP detection from approximately 0.8 pg/L to 1.2 µg/L. The biosensor showed a high specificity to CRP even in the presence of interfering substances. These results suggest that the proposed biosensor is capable for quantification of CRP from trace amounts of clinical samples. In addition, the adaption of this eFBG fiber-optical biosensor for detection of other relevant analytes can be easily realized.

All-fiber 3D vector displacement (bending) sensor based on an eccentric FBG

We demonstrate a fiber-optic 3D vector displacement sensor based on the monitoring of Bragg reflection from an eccentric grating inscribed in a depressed-cladding fiber using the femtosecond laser side-illumination and phase-mask technique. The compact sensing probe consists of a short section of depressed cladding fiber (DCF) containing eccentrically positioned fiber Bragg gratings. The eccentric grating breaks the cylindrical symmetry of the fiber cross-section and further has bending orientation-dependence. The generated fundamental resonance is strongly sensitive to bending of the fiber, and the direction of the bending plane can be determined from its responses. When integrated with axis strain monitoring, the sensor achieves a 3D vector displacement measurement via simple geometric analysis.

Plasmonic Optical Fiber-Grating Immunosensing: A Review

Plasmonic immunosensors are usually made of a noble metal (in the form of a film or nanoparticles) on which bioreceptors are grafted to sense analytes based on the antibody/antigen or other affinity mechanism. Optical fiber configurations are a miniaturized counterpart to the bulky Kretschmann prism and allow easy light injection and remote operation. To excite a surface plasmon (SP), the core-guided light is locally outcoupled. Unclad optical fibers were the first configurations reported to this end. Among the different architectures able to bring light in contact with the surrounding medium, a great quantity of research is today being conducted on metal-coated fiber gratings photo-imprinted in the fiber core, as they provide modal features that enable SP generation at any wavelength, especially in the telecommunication window. They are perfectly suited for use with cost-effective high-resolution interrogators, allowing both a high sensitivity and a low limit of detection to be reached in immunosensing. This paper will review recent progress made in this field with different kinds of gratings: uniform, tilted and eccentric short-period gratings as well as long-period fiber gratings. Practical cases will be reported, showing that such sensors can be used in very small volumes of analytes and even possibly applied to in vivo diagnosis.

Through-the-coating femtosecond laser inscription of very short fiber Bragg gratings for acoustic and high temperature sensing applications

Very short Type I and Type II Bragg gratings, on the order of 100 µm in length, are written through the protective polyimide coating of high NA and standard single mode silica optical fibers with infrared femtosecond pulses and a phase mask. By exploiting the transverse walk-off of apertured diffracted beams produced by the phase mask and a slit placed proximate the mask, complex grating structures are fabricated and characterized. These gratings are suitable for structural health monitoring based on acoustic measurements or localized high-temperature measurements.

Compact eccentric long period grating with improved sensitivity in low refractive index region

We demonstrate a compact eccentric long period grating with enhanced sensitivity in low refractive index region. With a period designed at 15 µm for coupling light to high order cladding modes, the grating is more sensitive to surrounding refractive index in low refractive index region. The intrinsically low coupling coefficients for those high order cladding modes are significantly improved with the eccentric localized inscription induced by the femtosecond laser. The fabricated grating is compact with a length of 4.05 mm, and exhibits an average sensitivity of ~505 nm/RIU in low refractive index region (1.3328-1.3544). The proposed principle can also work in other refractive index region with a proper choice of the resonant cladding modes.

Negative axial strain sensitivity in gold-coated eccentric fiber Bragg gratings

New dual temperature and strain sensor has been designed using eccentric second-order fiber Bragg gratings produced in standard single-mode optical fiber by point-by-point direct writing technique with tight focusing of 800 nm femtosecond laser pulses. With thin gold coating at the grating location, we experimentally show that such gratings exhibit a transmitted amplitude spectrum composed by the Bragg and cladding modes resonances that extend in a wide spectral range exceeding one octave. An overlapping of the first order and second order spectrum is then observed. High-order cladding modes belonging to the first order Bragg resonance coupling are close to the second order Bragg resonance, they show a negative axial strain sensitivity (-0.55 pm/με) compared to the Bragg resonance (1.20 pm/με) and the same temperature sensitivity (10.6 pm/°C). With this well conditioned system, temperature and strain can be determined independently with high sensitivity, in a wavelength range limited to a few nanometers.

Behavior of femtosecond laser-induced eccentric fiber Bragg gratings at very high temperatures

In this work, eccentric Bragg gratings are photoinscribed in telecommunication-grade optical fibers. They are localized close to the core-cladding interface, yielding strong cladding mode resonance couplings and high photoinduced birefringence. Their transmitted amplitude spectrum is measured with polarized light while they are exposed to temperature changes up to 900°C. Despite the gratings' overall good thermal stability that confirms their robustness for high-temperature refractometry, we report an interesting polarization effect depending on both the cladding mode resonance family and mode order. While the core mode birefringence decreases with growing temperatures, certain cladding mode resonances show an increase in wavelength splitting between their orthogonally polarized components. This differential behavior is of high interest in developing high-resolution, multiparametric sensing platforms.
